Boeing has developed a vertical situation display (VSD) to help prevent accidents related to controlled flight into terrain and approach/landing. The VSD provides pilots with an intuitive graphical representation of the aircraft's vertical flight path relative to terrain and the desired descent path. It is designed to both enhance safety and reduce operating costs by decreasing incidents like missed approaches or hard landings. The VSD will be available as an option on new Boeing 737s starting in early 2003 and can also be retrofitted onto existing 737s.
