Slavery In Shymia s Article, Slave Girl
In the article, Slave girl in California, a girl named Shymia was sold into slavery by her parents and
was sent to america with her slave holder. Shymia spent four years with with her slave holder till she
was rescued and given a second chance in life. In the novel, Frederick was a man who was born into
slavery by her slave mother and a white man who could have been his own master. After many years
of seeing tragic and horrifying event while in slavery he writes his life in a book in hopes of showing
others how slavery feels from a slave s point of view. Now for my thesis statement which is slavery
and family are central themes that are similar in both slave girl and the narrative of Frederick but both
also oppose each other with the theme of education .
Both stories rotate on a single word as their main idea and that is slavery and both stories have their
own way of showing it. In the article of slave girl she explains how slavery is and these were her
words, Slavery is like someone is mugging you and stealing your life . Frederick had a different way
of showing slavery by telling others the relationship that most slave s have with their parents and ...

slavery by her own parents which was upsetting to find out. After Shymia was rescued she was
allowed to call her parents and once she did her parent continued to tell Shymia that her slave holders
were nice people and that what she did was giving her mother a heart attack so after that Shyima

The Generation Of The United States
The Generation
1) Ellis sees the founding of the United States as phenomenal because the U.S. brought together
people of all different factions and beliefs in order to overthrow the reigning regime. He also believes
it is phenomenal because the United States was able to survive and become a nation that was brought
up upon an argument between state and federal sovereignty. In addition, to fight in the revolution and
win against Britain s best army and navy, the U.S. had to carve its own path with unprecedented steps.
Dues to the challenges the republic faced and overcame, the founding of the United States is truly
phenomenal in Ellis s eyes.
2) When Ellis writes about the need to see farsighted when looking at the founding of our country, ...

Those who saw nearsighted felt that America had no sense of national unity, and nothing to bring them
together except for the common wish to separate from Britain.
4) Combining the opposite perspectives that Ellis writes about on the founding of our country, the
central paradox of the revolutionary era is created. This paradox is that despite the massive advantages
America had provided by geographic isolation and bountiful natural resources, the points used to
justify the separation from England are the same reasons that overwhelmed the government leaders
who would oversee the new population and unify the 13 sovereign states.
5) Critics of the Constitutional Convention highlight many of the same faults in the convention. One
of these criticisms is that the convention was only to revise the Articles of Confederation not to
replace them. In addition, the meetings of the Convention were held in secrecy and the matters
discussed stayed private from majority of the average citizens. The reason behind this was because the
fifty five delegates were a group of elites that were hardly a good representation of the population as a
whole. Another criticism was that the southern delegates abused these meetings by using them to
obtain assurances that slavery would not be abolished in the south.
6) The first major liability of the United States was that no one had ever established a

Range Rover Analysis
The Myth of The Range Rover and Hollywood In Hollywood you re not considered a prominent
figure, until you drive a Range Rover. For this reason, the Range Rover is the perfect commodity to
exemplify a Hollywood myth. A myth as Roland Barthes describes in Mythologies, is a kind of
speech, in which the history of an object is distorted to signify a new modern history that feels
completely natural to modern society. The Range Rover has been appropriated into Hollywood by
celebrities and is predominantly owned by upper class celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Jay Z and
David Beckham. This vehicle, which was was originally used in the military and for off roading
terrain has had it s history drained and filled with a new history that signifies a much different myth
than it used to. In this essay, I will argue that the myth of the Range Rover signifies a prestigious and
powerful vehicle, designed with royalty and privilege as it is made specifically for the celebrities and
the famous upper class personalities of Hollywood. The Range Rover s appearance has an
authoritative god like presence caused by the size of the vehicle. It is a large vehicle, but mostly in it s
height as it is not very wide and appears significantly slim. Despite how large the body of the vehicle
appears, it can only sit five people so virtually no additional seating is gained by the size of the
vehicle, therefore the size of the vehicle is not for convenience purposes, but for exterior appearance.

Leadership Style And Effective Leadership Styles
Group leadership refers to the processes of leading, influencing and motivating members of a group to
become highly competent in achieving the goals or objectives of the group (Aritz and Robyn 73).
Though the adoption and implementation of a relevant and effective leadership style, group leaders
become effective in driving change through work groups and facilitating the achievement of
organizational goals. Leaders play a wide range of roles in leading groups, such as motivating
members, coordinating group activities, influencing positive behaviors among members and
motivating productivity and innovation (Tabernero et al. 1393). The following sections presents a
detailed analysis and discussion of the role of leadership style in group work and the most important
leadership roles in work groups. The paper uses evidence to support the argument that group leaders
must adopt effective leadership styles so that they can be successful in facilitating group activities and
ensuring that members of the group actively contribute towards the achievement of shared goals
(Thompson 23).
Leadership style refers to the specific behavior or characteristics that a leader exhibits in managing,
guiding, directing and motivating a group of people within an organization (Kark and Dina 504). The
leadership style that leader adopt and use to play their roles within a work group define their ability to
inspire change of work behavior among group members. This means that an effective leadership style

Priam And Achilles
As cliché and overused as the statement is, heroes come in many different shapes and sizes. When one
thinks about the heroes throughout The Iliad, great and powerful warriors such as Hector and Achilles
immediately come to mind. However, heroes are not limited to fighting men. Heroes are those that are
willing to risk their lives for the greater good of their people. For this reason, I consider Priam, the
king of Troy, to be a hero. He is adamant in his resolve to recover the body of his dead son, Hector;
moreover, his quest to do so involves confronting the short tempered and unpredictable Achilles. Not
only is the ransom that king Priam provides ridiculously generous, but more importantly, the courage
that he displays in the face of adversity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Priam s determination to recover the body goes further than the love of a father; it represents the
devotion a ruler has for his citizens. Not only will Priam take great comfort in the proper burial of his
son, but the Trojans will take solace knowing their greatest warrior and symbol of honor has been
returned to his native homeland. In addition to the homecoming of the body of Troy s most honorable
warrior, the great enemy warrior in Achilles agrees to a truce as well. Priam, a king with the backing
of an entire Trojan army, takes matters into his own hands and risks his life for his city of Troy. Even
though he does not have to, he does the dirty work in a respectful, mature, and responsible way. Priam
refuses to listen to his comrades, who fear the danger he is putting himself in, and he even does the
unthinkable: bowing down and begging at the knees of the man that killed his son. His quest to claim
Hector s body is just as honorable and courageous as the determination Hector shows in bringing Troy
victory. Luckily for Priam, Achilles is understanding and sympathetic due to Priam s emotional
attachment to his son, resulting in the return of Hector s

Voodoo In African-American Culture
In American popular culture, the word voodoo has become synonymous with macabre imagery and
the practice of dark magic. This notion is evident in the portrayal of voodoo in movies, music,
literature, and on the Internet. Voodoo is often inaccurately used as a single term to refer to a number
of different African Diasporic religions, including West African Vodun, Hatian Vodou, and American
Voodoo. Also included is hoodoo, an African American folk magic that has gradually supplanted
American Voodoo since the early 19th century. Hoodoo itself is not a religion, although it does borrow
elements from both African and European religions and shares a historical connection with Vodun,
Vodou, and Voodoo.

Both hoodoo and Voodoo are found throughout contemporary American society. Most notable is the
imagery of Voodoo, which is appealing for a variety of reasons, specifically the dark themes. As stated
by author Yvonne P. Chireau, Voodoo, as it is used in the American context, connotes an illicit form of
spirituality, and many images have been used to bolster the notorious associations between it, racial
blackness, and evil magic (8). In addition to this, hoodoo and Voodoo are often used synonymously,
creating further confusion for the general public with little knowledge of the true nature of hoodoo and
the religious tradition of Voodoo. Despite these inconsistencies with reality, the focus on the darker
elements and the problematic identification seems to create even more commercial appeal for Voodoo

Attenuated Vaccination
A common alternative to the live attenuated vaccinations are inactivated, or killed, vaccines.
Inactivated vaccines are produced by growing the virus in a medium and then inactivating it with heat
and/or a chemical. Since the virus is inactivated, it is unable to cause infection, even in patients that
suffer from immunodeficiency. Inactivated viruses are faced with limitations, however. Only viral
vaccines containing the whole virus are available in this form, which includes; influenza; polio; rabies;
and hepatitis A (Figure 3). The inactivated vaccinations also must be administered in multiple doses,
as the first dose does not produce protective antibodies, but only primes the immune system for
infection (Offit et al.. 2002). Polysaccharide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Horn Books
Originating in England for school children during the 16th century, although they are some accounts
as early as the 13th century, Horn books were brought to America by the colonials. A horn book most
commonly consisted of two wooden or leather panels with a handle towards the bottom for the child to
hold and a sheet of paper held between them. Some hornbooks were made from ivory, copper, or even
gold. Since, paper was a rarity during this time, a sheet of transparent cow horn was laid across the
paper to protect from any damage or wear which is where the name horn comes from (Plimpton,

read books during the 17th to 19th century. These chapbooks covered many genres such as crime,
mystery, politics, or even fairy tales (Richardson, 2017). Chap books can range from a small number
of pages such as two, all the way up to forty pages. They are produced by hand printing on a single
side or sometimes both, then repeatedly folded in half until coming to a correct size. The edges of the
paper were then cut to form pages, and the seam in the middle was hand sewn. Nevertheless, when the
industrial revolution happened during the 19th century, steam printing led to an easier means of
producing higher quality books and at a quicker rate, which attributed the downfall of the cheaper
chapbooks. Although not many survived since they were such a poor quality, chapbooks were
incredibly important during their reign. They allowed an easy means for poor or middle class children,
as well as adults, to read books of many genres at a low cost price. Therefore, this meant more people
were exposed to literature that had previously been harder to obtain in such large quantities. Overall,

pancreatitis, cancer and cardiovascular disease (Rehm136). Not to mention the many types of injuries
that be sustained while intoxicated, such as alcohol poisoning, broken limbs, or blackouts (137).
Once a person health and family life begin to become effected it should trigger an alarm that
something is not right. One of the major steps a workaholic must do to help cope with their problem is
to first, recognize that they indeed have a problem. A workaholic must be able to see that the real root
of all their problems is due to their unwavering need to constantly choose work over family and
leisure time. Once a workaholic recognizes and pinpoints the problem the next step would be for them
to accept that they have a problem. At this point it is likely that the workaholics close friends, family
and any others that may be affected come together to express their concerns and provide support to the
workaholic through a process called group intervention (Dungan 42). The goal of such an intervention
is to be able to break through the denial and emotions felt by the workaholic so that they can believe
in themselves and find strength within so that they may

Examining the Ethics of Plato and Aristotle Essay
This essay will be examining the ethics of Plato (428 347 BCE) and Aristotle (384 322 B.C). I will
firstly attempt to summarise the five fundamental concepts of Plato and Aristotle before providing my
own opinion and view on their ethics. I will concentrate on their theories on the good life as a life of
justice, censorship, knowledge and the good life.
I will first examine Plato s ethics. Plato was a philosopher who was both a rationalist and absolutist.
According to his view, people must be schooled to acquire certain kinds of knowledge i.e.
mathematics, philosophy and so forth. This training will give them the capacity to know the nature of
the good life. Since, evil is due to lack of knowledge.
Not all people have the mental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was how Plato perceived absolutism.
Aristotle s overlook on what is the good life as he used an empirical approach to ethics. The good life
as Aristotle defines it as one which has happiness as a characteristic or a life of happiness . Happiness
is an activity of the soul in accord with perfect virtue . People ought to behave so as to achieve
happiness . I believe that Aristotle s answer will be everyone always ought to follow the middle course
between certain kinds of activities. Aristotle uses an analogy to describe happiness. The analogy of
happiness is best described as how much a person can eat. For example, if a person believes that
having two cakes would be sufficient for his lunch, but if he believes that having one cake would not
be enough for his lunch, then how much is right for him? To be right for him, he must eat between one
and two cakes in order to satisfy his appetite. This is Aristotle s formula, the doctrine of the mean or
the preferred name golden mean . The Doctrine of the Mean is the moderation in all things. The
virtues we must have are virtues of moderation. This will be different for different people as Aristotle
believed. Aristotle is therefore a relativist.
I would now like to share my opinion and perspective on how I perceive the theories of Plato and
Aristotle. In my view, the better solution to the problem of the good life is Aristotle s belief rather than
Plato s belief of the good life. Firstly, Plato s

Midrash Definition
The Halakhah Judaism is not only a set of beliefs about God, the universe and man, but Judaism is a
comprehensive way of life. In Judaism there are rules and practices outlined for almost all day to day
activities and the manner in which Judaism believers must conduct themselves. These set of rules and
practices in Judaism are known as the Halakhah, which translated means to walk (Efron pg. 144).
However, in order for the Halakhah to emerge rabbis had to study the Torah and develop their own
ways of interpreting the Hebrew Bible known as midrash. Midrash is derived from a Hebrew root
meaning to seek or to investigate, midrash however is not an easy term to define (Efron pg 143). The
Midrash refers to a collection of rabbinic interpretations of the Bible and it also describes the approach
of interpretation reproduced in these collections. As the Midrash was created there became two
different forms rabbinic expression, which became known as the Halakah and Aggadah. ... Show more

By the time of the Babylonian Talmud, rabbinic sages had come to believe that the Torah revealed to
Moses had two forms, the written Torah and an oral Torah transmitted by the Sages (Efron et al. pg.

includes; legal debates, rulings, biblical interpretations, wise sayings of the sort collected in Pirkei
Avot and stories of the rabbis own exploits. The written Torah on the other hand consists of the five
books of Moses God gave to the Jews at Mt. Sinai. However, the rabbis felt that the oral Torah was
necessary, because from their perspective, the written Torah was insufficient by itself the rabbis
recognized that the written Torah contained too many gaps and interpretive difficulties to stand on its

Examples Of Leadership In Remember The Titans
In the movie Remember the Titans, coaches Yoast and Boone demonstrate leadership through the three
leadership styles; authoritarian, democratic and laissez faire. Authoritarian Authoritarian leadership

and control by dictating policies and procedures, deciding what goals need to be achieved, and directs
all activities to be done by the team. An authoritarian is usually most successful when things are going

genetics, social and economic issues, and one of the most important is they way a person s family

The Importance Of The Ancient Greek Olympic Games
The Importance of the Olympic Games
Naked men running around competing against each other was once a common thing in the Olympics.
Even though it sounds pretty gross, it was a true thing that happened in ancient times. The ancient
Greek Olympics, although very long ago, have had a lasting effect on our society today. According to
World History teacher Laron Johnson, the Greek Empire started in 8th Century BC. The Greeks have
always valued competition; they constantly fought with each other as well as working together to fight
against other peoples (Johnson). They have given us a lot of our modern things. Thus, the ancient
Greek Olympics have had an impact on our modern society in global unity, sporting events, and our
obsession with sports.
The Olympics have always been a way to bring people together. Even when the city states were
fighting each other, they put aside their differences and competed peacefully. Mark Cartwright states,
The Games started with a procession which went from the host town of Elis to Olympia...and on
arrival at Olympia all athletes and officials swore an oath to follow the established rules of the
competitions and to compete with honour and respect (Cartwright). Basically, the athletes were
promoting unity among the city states by swearing to uphold their oath of truce during the games. This
unity has come into our modern games when athletes from warring countries can enjoy one another s
company, even if their countries hate each other. According to the author of the website International

A Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor
First, the identification of a licensed chemical dependency counselor would suffice at the moment. A
licensed chemical dependency counselor are counselors that specialize in identifying and treating
addictive behaviors that are maladaptive, altered from cognitive imbalance, and from physiological
discrepancies, or frequent intoxication to achieve homeostasis or functionality to some extent. In other
words, licensed chemical dependency counselors establish and implement treatments to help people
cure their addictions from substances which they are chemically dependent on. Second, the nature of
chemical dependency is to be acknowledged. The nature of chemical dependency is not very well
understood by human population. Many people see addictions as diseases, immoral behaviors or sins,
as maladaptive behaviors, and some may view such substance dependence as out of control behaviors
as well. However, chemical or substance dependency is a mental issue. The mind tells the body that it
needs a certain substance to function, it is a craving that is difficult for the body to ignore, and the
body cannot function until such a need is met. The change in behaviors, mood and conscious
motivates the mind further to continue finding ways to meet this need. Therefore, there is not only an
addiction, but a chemical dependency issue as well. It is strong and difficult to defeat. It is strong
enough that it may cause some people to conduct criminal activities or infringe upon the rights and

Marriage And Divorce In Hosea s The Hebrew Scriptures
Hosea s use of the marriage metaphor in relation to the nature of YHWH and Israel s relationship was
ingenious in the sense that it gives us a special insight into the divine human relations. However it
raises some serious problems for those concerned with the texts that may be interpreted as excusing
violence against women. In the case of the Hebrew Scriptures, the image of the husband physically
retaliating against his wife is almost unavoidable, and his right to do so unquestionable, to the extent
that divine retribution is based on the notion that the deity has the right to punish the people. The first
task of the prophet is to capture the imagination of their audience, in order to persuade the gravity of
one s message to their listeners. Hosea convinced Israel of her urgent need to repent by using a
plethora of beautiful and poetic images to capture the nature of YHWH s affection and claims upon
Israel and to portray the depth of Israel s separation from YHWH. In the past, scholars have been
preoccupied with the historical questions that such an alleged marriage proposes (e.g. the laws
regarding marriage and divorce, the nature of Canaanite fertility cults and their saturation into Hebrew
religious practices, the fascinating account of Hosea and Gomer s apparent stormy marriage). It was

Using Steroids to Gain the Perfect Body
In our days, most people have set the goal and dream to have the perfect body. They believe by having

like a super star, a hero in a Hollywood movie, a strong soldier, and an Olympic athlete. However,
what are the extent people will go to get the perfect body? The biggest problem for those who dream

These steroids are made to emphasize and promote muscle growth but without the masculinizing the
user as much as testosterone does (Silverstein, p.18). Anabolic steroids were first used to help World
War II victims put on weight at the end of the war. Anabolic steroids were intended for the sick
people, but instead of this, healthy people often abuse these steroids because they want to gain muscle
(Morris, p.230).
There are three major benefits from steroid use and they are: first, athletes will attain a greater
increase in lean muscle mass and strength when it is used with a combination of hard training and the
drug; second, the athlete s body suffers less breakdown as this decrease in muscle breakdown and
recovery time permits more frequent training sessions at higher intensity and for longer periods of
time (Lukas, p.7); and third but not least benefit, the increased aggressiveness they are believed to
simulate as this increased aggressiveness may drive athletes to train harder and longer without the
usual fatigue (Rogak, p.11). Other positive effects of using steroids are increases in: storage of muscle
glycogen; blood volume; a general boasting of the immune system; and the reduction of body fat
percentage. The effects are maintained as long as the athlete continues the steroid use (Silverstein,
p.17).
Unfortunately, anabolic steroids have many side effects. Some short term side effects include high

The children s book Watertower, by Gary Crew and illustrated by Steven Woolman, is simple when
individually read in text and illustration, but when placed together becomes unusually complex. Most
eight to twelve year olds who would read this story could find it amusing or entertaining, but when
read by someone older and wiser, they might apply past experiences to form opinions for each element
in reading the illustrations and text individually, then combined. The reader is able to construct his or

setting, expression and focus in the scenery and objects around.
The visuals in this story take the reader to a farm town close to an old, abandoned water tower. The
two characters mainly focused on throughout the illustration are young boys around the age of ten.

A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man By James Joyce
From the very beginning of the novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a young man by James Joyce we meet
Stephen Dedalus. From there, we perceive the world exactly as Stephen perceives it. Through sounds,
smells, and sensations we learn everything that Stephen is learning and many times in incredibly
specific detail. Stephen s overly sensitive reactions and consistent use of imagery is proof to us that
Stephen is different and views the world from an artist s perspective. This uses of imagery and motifs
by James Joyce is used to describe how Stephen is able to interpret the world around him.
Furthermore, Joyce reveals this through the name of the main character. Joyce s ability to make stories
realistic was one of the reasons that he was such a tremendous success as a writer. Specifically, his use
of imagery to establish motifs and symbols to provide a consciousness flow throughout his work that
almost transports you into Stephens memories. If we can understand this imagery, then we can better
understand Stephen s life and the time and place he lived in. Stephen or Steven is a masculine first
name, derived from the Greek name Stephanos , in turn from the Greek word, meaning wreath, crown,
honor, reward , literary that which surrounds or encompasses and in Greek mythology, Daedalus was a
skillful craftsman and artist . The portrait of the artist as a young man is not a story about a portrait or
a piece of art by an artist but the artist himself. It is about the experiences and difficulties in his life
that lead him into finding his passion, his purpose and himself. Joyce also uses the name Stephen
Daedalus for his protagonist as a reference to the builder of the Cretan Labyrinth. As the story goes,
Daedalus, an architect, created a maze called the Labyrinth to house a half man, half bull upon the
Kings request. To keep the secret of the Labyrinth safe, the King imprisoned Daedalus and his son in
the Labyrinth too. Trying to escape Daedalus created two pairs of wings from feathers and wax which
he and his son used to fly from the island. His son, who did not heed his father s warning and took too

The Generation Of The United States The Generation 1) Ellis sees the founding of the United States as phenomenal because the U.S. brought together people of all different factions and beliefs in order to overthrow the reigning regime. He also believes it is phenomenal because the United States was able to survive and become a nation that was brought up upon an argument between state and federal sovereignty. In addition, to fight in the revolution and win against Britain s best army and navy, the U.S. had to carve its own path with unprecedented steps. Those who saw nearsighted felt that America had no sense of national unity, and nothing to bring them together except for the common wish to separate from Britain. 4) Combining the opposite perspectives that Ellis writes about on the founding of our country, the central paradox of the revolutionary era is created. This paradox is that despite the massive advantages America had provided by geographic isolation and bountiful natural resources, the points used to justify the separation from England are the same reasons that overwhelmed the government leaders who would oversee the new population and unify the 13 sovereign states. 5) Critics of the Constitutional Convention highlight many of the same faults in the convention. One of these criticisms is that the convention was only to revise the Articles of Confederation not to replace them. In addition, the meetings of the Convention were held in secrecy and the matters discussed stayed private from majority of the average citizens. The reason behind this was because the fifty five delegates were a group of elites that were hardly a good representation of the population as a whole. Another criticism was that the southern delegates abused these meetings by using them to obtain assurances that slavery would not be abolished in the south. 6) The first major liability of the United States was that no one had ever established a ... For this reason, the Range Rover is the perfect commodity to exemplify a Hollywood myth. A myth as Roland Barthes describes in Mythologies, is a kind of speech, in which the history of an object is distorted to signify a new modern history that feels completely natural to modern society. The Range Rover has been appropriated into Hollywood by celebrities and is predominantly owned by upper class celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Jay Z and David Beckham. This vehicle, which was was originally used in the military and for off roading terrain has had it s history drained and filled with a new history that signifies a much different myth than it used to. In this essay, I will argue that the myth of the Range Rover signifies a prestigious and powerful vehicle, designed with royalty and privilege as it is made specifically for the celebrities and the famous upper class personalities of Hollywood. The Range Rover s appearance has an authoritative god like presence caused by the size of the vehicle. It is a large vehicle, but mostly in it s height as it is not very wide and appears significantly slim. Despite how large the body of the vehicle appears, it can only sit five people so virtually no additional seating is gained by the size of the vehicle, therefore the size of the vehicle is not for convenience purposes, but for exterior appearance. Leadership Style And Effective Leadership Styles Group leadership refers to the processes of leading, influencing and motivating members of a group to become highly competent in achieving the goals or objectives of the group (Aritz and Robyn 73). Though the adoption and implementation of a relevant and effective leadership style, group leaders become effective in driving change through work groups and facilitating the achievement of organizational goals. Leaders play a wide range of roles in leading groups, such as motivating members, coordinating group activities, influencing positive behaviors among members and motivating productivity and innovation (Tabernero et al. 1393). The following sections presents a detailed analysis and discussion of the role of leadership style in group work and the most important leadership roles in work groups. The paper uses evidence to support the argument that group leaders must adopt effective leadership styles so that they can be successful in facilitating group activities and ensuring that members of the group actively contribute towards the achievement of shared goals (Thompson 23). When one thinks about the heroes throughout The Iliad, great and powerful warriors such as Hector and Achilles immediately come to mind. However, heroes are not limited to fighting men. Heroes are those that are willing to risk their lives for the greater good of their people. For this reason, I consider Priam, the king of Troy, to be a hero. In addition to the homecoming of the body of Troy s most honorable warrior, the great enemy warrior in Achilles agrees to a truce as well. Priam, a king with the backing of an entire Trojan army, takes matters into his own hands and risks his life for his city of Troy. Even though he does not have to, he does the dirty work in a respectful, mature, and responsible way. Priam refuses to listen to his comrades, who fear the danger he is putting himself in, and he even does the unthinkable: bowing down and begging at the knees of the man that killed his son. People ought to behave so as to achieve happiness . I believe that Aristotle s answer will be everyone always ought to follow the middle course between certain kinds of activities. Aristotle uses an analogy to describe happiness. The analogy of happiness is best described as how much a person can eat. For example, if a person believes that having two cakes would be sufficient for his lunch, but if he believes that having one cake would not be enough for his lunch, then how much is right for him? To be right for him, he must eat between one and two cakes in order to satisfy his appetite. This is Aristotle s formula, the doctrine of the mean or the preferred name golden mean . The Doctrine of the Mean is the moderation in all things. The virtues we must have are virtues of moderation. This will be different for different people as Aristotle believed. Even though it sounds pretty gross, it was a true thing that happened in ancient times. The ancient Greek Olympics, although very long ago, have had a lasting effect on our society today. According to World History teacher Laron Johnson, the Greek Empire started in 8th Century BC. The Greeks have always valued competition; they constantly fought with each other as well as working together to fight against other peoples (Johnson). They have given us a lot of our modern things. Thus, the ancient Greek Olympics have had an impact on our modern society in global unity, sporting events, and our obsession with sports. The Olympics have always been a way to bring people together. Even when the city states were fighting each other, they put aside their differences and competed peacefully. Mark Cartwright states, The Games started with a procession which went from the host town of Elis to Olympia...and on arrival at Olympia all athletes and officials swore an oath to follow the established rules of the competitions and to compete with honour and respect (Cartwright). Basically, the athletes were promoting unity among the city states by swearing to uphold their oath of truce during the games. Many people see addictions as diseases, immoral behaviors or sins, as maladaptive behaviors, and some may view such substance dependence as out of control behaviors as well. However, chemical or substance dependency is a mental issue. The mind tells the body that it needs a certain substance to function, it is a craving that is difficult for the body to ignore, and the body cannot function until such a need is met. The change in behaviors, mood and conscious motivates the mind further to continue finding ways to meet this need. Therefore, there is not only an addiction, but a chemical dependency issue as well. • 34. Marriage And Divorce In Hosea s The Hebrew Scriptures Hosea s use of the marriage metaphor in relation to the nature of YHWH and Israel s relationship was ingenious in the sense that it gives us a special insight into the divine human relations. However it raises some serious problems for those concerned with the texts that may be interpreted as excusing violence against women. In the case of the Hebrew Scriptures, the image of the husband physically retaliating against his wife is almost unavoidable, and his right to do so unquestionable, to the extent that divine retribution is based on the notion that the deity has the right to punish the people. The first task of the prophet is to capture the imagination of their audience, in order to persuade the gravity of one s message to their listeners. Hosea convinced Israel of her urgent need to repent by using a plethora of beautiful and poetic images to capture the nature of YHWH s affection and claims upon Israel and to portray the depth of Israel s separation from YHWH. In the past, scholars have been preoccupied with the historical questions that such an alleged marriage proposes (e.g. the laws regarding marriage and divorce, the nature of Canaanite fertility cults and their saturation into Hebrew religious practices, the fascinating account of Hosea and Gomer s apparent stormy marriage). These steroids are made to emphasize and promote muscle growth but without the masculinizing the user as much as testosterone does (Silverstein, p.18). Anabolic steroids were first used to help World War II victims put on weight at the end of the war. Anabolic steroids were intended for the sick people, but instead of this, healthy people often abuse these steroids because they want to gain muscle (Morris, p.230). There are three major benefits from steroid use and they are: first, athletes will attain a greater increase in lean muscle mass and strength when it is used with a combination of hard training and the drug; second, the athlete s body suffers less breakdown as this decrease in muscle breakdown and recovery time permits more frequent training sessions at higher intensity and for longer periods of time (Lukas, p.7); and third but not least benefit, the increased aggressiveness they are believed to simulate as this increased aggressiveness may drive athletes to train harder and longer without the usual fatigue (Rogak, p.11). Other positive effects of using steroids are increases in: storage of muscle glycogen; blood volume; a general boasting of the immune system; and the reduction of body fat percentage. The effects are maintained as long as the athlete continues the steroid use (Silverstein, p.17). Unfortunately, anabolic steroids have many side effects.
