This document discusses the differences between leadership and management in organizations. It explains that management involves planning, organizing, and controlling resources to achieve goals, while leadership inspires people to achieve a shared vision. Three key concepts for effective leadership and management are discussed: trust, which involves integrity and openness; followership, and the importance of different styles of followers; and emotional intelligence, which leaders demonstrate through self-awareness and social skills. In the world of public management, there is a need to maintain a high level of performance. Performance in the public eye can be described as the display of competence, the demonstration of leadership, display of flexibility, and the ability to work in a team atmosphere. The actual performance, concerning management within an organization, begins with leadership. What is a leader? How does one define a leader? The abridged definition of a leader is considered to be someone within an organization who is able to get people/employees to do things they have never done before, perform outside of their daily routines, and be able to take some risks for the common good of the organization or the community.
Good leadership begins with the exercising of authority, whether it is formal or informal, in directing and coordinating the work of others, or by using a combination of formal and informal authority together for positive social change and progression. There is a distinct difference between leadership and management. Management involves power and formal authority given to a person in a high-ranking position within the organization for the responsibility and accountability using the organizational resources. On the other hand, leadership is based on the type of charisma that is exercised by the person. Leadership involves the relationship between people and communities in which influence and power are evenly distributed.
There are a few essential functions of leaders stemming from a system of communication, promoting and securing essential support functions, and being able to define the true purpose and the goals of an organization. The true definition of a leader will arise when traits are identified such as intelligence, dependability, energy, excitement, and socioeconomic status. Although these are not tangible items that leaders possess, they serve as a foundation for those willing to follow the leader. There are different kinds of leadership styles that are employed in organizations: authoritarian, transformational, transactional, and Laissez-faire. Depending on the type of person, the characteristics the person possesses, and how the organization functions, there will be a different style or approach to managing personnel and employees. The authoritarian leadership is one that dictates all the rules, regulations, and happenings inside of the organization, while also indicating to the subordinates all orders are to be carried out and moved forward for processing. In this type of leadership there is no room for discussion or rebellion against the leader.
A transactional leader is one who has a vision and mission upon taking over the reins within the organization. The transactional leadership approach assumes that leaders could be tr ...

1. (Mt) – BMAL501 Leadership and Management
Ronda post- Management and Leadership Within an OrganizationLeadership and
management are an asset to all organizations. Each, a leader, or a manager, have a very
intricate role within the organization to help them succeed. Looking at the processes of
leadership and management and how they are important and relevant in an organization.
How the role of a leader and/or manager can be the vital piece of how an organization can
keep their employees excited and motivated to complete the tasks at hand which the
organization will increase their customer base and their bottom line.To understand the
difference in management and leadership one must first understand their functions. The
management of the organization requires the involvement of people and resources to
achieve goals of the organization. Management has functions of planning, leading,
organizing, and managing people (Satterlee, 2018) (Satterlee, 2018, p. 4) Managers will
need to understand the four functions listed in the definition and train their employees in
the roles they are assigned. Leadership will assist the organization to be successful by
aligning the efforts of others with the direction the organization is headed by inspiring the
people and sharing the vision and mission of the company (Satterlee, 2018)(Satterlee, 2018,
p. 5).In reading the article, “Managing Behavior vs. Leading People Evidence-Based Lessons
to Achieve & Sustain an Injury-Free Workplace”, the author of the article talked about how if
a management stated, “I empower you,” management means get it done and when we look
through the lenses of management they are trying to determine if the person truly feels
empowered (Geller, 2022). As a manager, your focus is to build relationships and
implement activities for the good of the organization and stakeholders (Satterlee, 2018, p.
102) Every organization will find that both the management and leadership of their
organization are needed to succeed. One is not needed more than the other but function to
the success of their employees. The role, work and the importance of management is
vital. As discussed in the previous paragraph a manager must know and understand their
function and why they are important to the organization. As the manager of an organization,
you need to be able to plan accordingly. Planning helps the management of the organization
achieve the goals needed for success. Sometimes the goals are not achieved but with
planning the team will be backed by the employees. With the organizing portion the
manager can make sure the employees complete the tasks. Leading as a manager requires
the ability to successfully communicate the needs, vision, and mission of the company.
Control, when heard, people may think of someone being pushy or taking over. In
management as a manager, you will need to control the outcome of the activities that need
2. to be completed by the employees, work with the outcome of the tasks compared to what
was completed. Managers that do not fill the shoes that management has proposed the
employee team does not feel important to the organization (Wojkowska et al,
2021).Management and leadership have very distinguishing characteristics that separates
the true essence of guiding others with purpose. Although each dynamic provides
meaningful outcomes, they tend to notice them as contributing factors that is
misunderstood. In order to lead and manage others with intrusive purpose for the greater
good of the whole, people managers must lead by example in order to afford others to
follow.Scripture states, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in
humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to
the interests of the others” (Philippians 2:3-4, NIV). In other words, Paul’s illustration was
to communicate and warn against a spirit of self-ambition and personal agenda at the cost
of those who are under the authority of others. Due to the nature of humans, Paul continues
to remind the readers of the tendencies in which people find themselves looking out for
their own interest. The scripture mentioned, encourages Believers to highlight the same
interest to those they encounter, especially those that are managed.Furthermore, leadership
and managing others is about inspiring them to believe and enabling them to make their
existence purposeful and meaningful.Next, the difference between management versus
leadership can be misguided by innate principles learned without fully understanding.
Management versus leadership have certain characteristics for a leader to embrace as they
encompass empowerment of others. Management uses guided principles to move
individuals or an organization forward. These concepts are driven by a variety of strategic
dynamics which are led by objectives and goals through the people being
managed.Nevertheless, leadership is about anticipating with a foresight by getting others
invested in the overall objective. This guiding concept of leadership assist others in
navigating a course that helps to keep a company or business balanced by consistent
communication and investing in those being managed. In management versus leadership,
leadership is managing and breaking down the organization hierarchy to gather necessary
perspectives at every level despite what is communicated. Finally, management versus
leadership is how a leader manage the on-going onset of those who think differently by
listening well, learning new concepts and ideas, as well as leading with a servant’s heart just
as Christ modeled.ReferencesEkonen, M., & Heilmann, P. (2021). The Role of Developmental

10.3389/fpsyg.2021.635973.Krystle post-Discussion Thread 1: Leadership and
ManagementThis discussion thread will explain the three most important organizational
3. concepts for leadership and management. Marker (2010, p. 32) terms the difference
between leadership and management by simply phrasing “a good manager gets others to do
what he/she wants them to do” and “a good leader gets others to want what he/she wants.”
A manager strives for the position, power, and authority of being in charge, while followers
do as they are told. Furthermore, leaders use emotion, logic, and communication to
empower those around them and share the mission vision. The following concepts are trust,
followership, emotional intelligence, and a biblical orientation to integrate with the
concepts. Three ConceptsConcept 1: TrustTrust in the leadership and management team is a
critical concept in an organization. Satterlee (2018) states that trust encompasses five
dimensions: integrity, competence, consistency, loyalty, and openness. To be a successful
organization, leadership and management should possess these traits in their employees.
When employees can trust an organization and feel empowered by a positive leader,
employees will naturally fall into their position, supporting the mission with a positive
outlook. Organizational trust means employees trust the leadership and organization. They
feel safe, protected, and treated fairly, feeling a part of the team. Employees will then
support the mission, strategies, and policies, committing to its mission and giving them
their full support (Kerse, 2019, p. 605). When employees feel that sense of security and
comfort, loyalty comes naturally. Concept 2: FollowershipFollowership is another essential
concept when running an organization. It is only possible to be successful with followers.
Without great leaders to lead and empower followers, the purpose of running an
organization has no meaning. In Satterlee (2018), there are five styles of followers: isolates,
bystanders, participants, activists, and diehards. Every organization will have a variation of
all types of followers. These followers can also be pursued by how effective management
and leadership are present. Transformational leadership is the most effective leadership.
Research by Nielsen et al. (2022) demonstrates that transformational leadership brings
others together for a communal purpose by using intrinsic rewards and reinforcing
behavior to entice followers to job satisfaction and inspiration for self-improvement. At the
same time, seeing the negative turned positive, and the stressful situation turned into
challenges versus failures. The outlook for the outcome weighs differently when one
thought process is more mindful. Concept 3: Emotional IntelligenceThe last concept is
emotional intelligence. As a leader, understanding those you work with is essential. It
contributes to a good leader. Satterlee (2018) also states that it has five dimensions: self-
awareness, self-management, self-motivation, empathy, and social skills. Management can
improve on these dimensions; however, leaders tend to demonstrate most of them.
Transformative leader is more open to expressing their thoughts and visions and
communicating; these skills attract followers who want to be a part of a leadership team
who cares and is there to help them in all areas. Transactional leaders demonstrate to
follow the plan, which is very direct, concise, and at all means to reach the end state and
goal. However, this can cause followers to feel obligated to help versus willing to be more
activists or diehard followers; this causes built-up conflict among management and
followers.Biblical IntegrationIntegrating biblical scripture into the three concepts is
demonstrated throughout the bible. Apostle Paul is an excellent example of these concepts.
As a leader, he displayed emotional intelligence and was a transformative leader with
4. followers. Followers were willing to follow him because he was kind and open to all
subjects and matters without discrimination. He handled stress when faced with John Mark
and Barnabas, showing his maturity with growth and discipline. Moreover, as a leader who
empowered and communicated with his followers, listening to their voices and opinions to
resolve any conflict and building effective leadership with all the differences he faced.Paul
was a good leader, and his followers were loyal to him. 2 Timothy 1:6-7 states, “6, For this
reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on
of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love
and self-discipline” (New International Version, 1978/2008, 2 Timothy 1:6-7). Leaders like
Paul possess all of the most important concepts. Craun & Henson (2022) mentions that
good leadership is effective when valuing other is rooted and serving first to leave.
Ultimately the end goal is to be disciples and servants of God to spread the word; fulfilling
God’s mission is similar to how management and leadership should drive their
organization.Reference2 Tim 1:6-7 NIV – – bible gateway. (n.d.). Retrieved January 17,
