The digipak for Blur's "The Best Of" album follows the typical format for including lyrics, credits, and artwork. The front cover features a simple but iconic cartoon image of the band. Inside are pages for each band member that pair their photo with lyrics. Additional photos show the band's personality. Credits and technical information are clearly listed as required. The back cover displays the tracklist and standard copyright details.
This is a research document on all the different kind of digipaks. I did this to give me a rough idea on what to do for my digipak when I was in the planning stage of making one. These different albums helped me out especially as they are under the same genre as the one I am producing so it was good for me to go off digipaks that are in the same genre.
2. What is a digipak?
Digipaks is basically the packaging of the CD or
DVD which holds information that comes with
all music records such as:
-Lyrics
-Credits
-Record Company Info
-Photos/Artwork of the artist
-An address in which the customer can contact
the record company/artist.
(Each digipak differs in style depending on the
type of music, it is important for artists to have
a recognisable look that will differentiate
themselves from other artists)
3. The Front Cover
Blur are a Brit Pop band
therefore it seems
appropriate that their 'Best
Of' album should be bright
and eye catching.
This particular album cover
has become Blur's most
iconic image - it can even
be found on display at The cover is very simple
London's National Portrait and effective. It clearly
Gallery! shows the members of the
band but in cartoon form,
which is more artistic than
simply having photographs
of them.
4. Inside The Packaging
On the first page we see
the cartoon image of the
lead singer, Damon
Albarn. It clearly states
that he is on vocals and
is the face of the band as
he is on the first page.
Next to this are lyrics of
some of the songs of the
record.
The next few pages are very
similar, each page shows a
band member and what their
position in the band is, as well
as lyrics from the CD.
The style of the layout is very
bright similarly to the front
cover, this shows some
structure and formality of the
style of the digipak.
5. Inside The Packaging
On the following pages, there is a
photograph of the band in a bathroom! This
presents the band as funny and with good
personality.
.
In the middle of the
booklet, there is a series
of photos. In my opinion it
looks a bit like a mood
board which sums up the
image of the band.
There are photos of the
band as well as artistic
images which represent
what the band is all
about. For example the
graffiti on the top left
corner could represent
their urban London roots.
6. The Last Page
All digipacks MUST contain
credits. These credits include:
-Producers
-Engineers
-Assistants
-Copyright info
-Who the record is owned by (in
this case EMI)
-The year the songs were
produced
-A website of the record
company
-Website and address for Blur
fans
-Photographers and Art
directors
-With Thanks to any other
contributors
In this case Blur have kept their credits page
very clear and simple in accordance with the
rest of the digipack.
7. Back Cover
And of course the
back of the CD
packaging has the
tracklist of the songs
of their album.
It also has more
information about the
copyright and
manufacturing label,
as well as the release
date of the CD
