Introduction:
The demand for high storage capacity led to the
evolution of DVD format, which enabled high quality,
standard definition video distribution and recording.
Further, the increased capacity accommodated more
demanding data applications. At the same time, the
DVD specification use the same form factor as the CD,
making seamless migration to the next generation
format possible and offering complete backward
compatibility. Currently high definition video demands
a new solution.

The need for Blu-ray:
Today, digital music, photo and video storage on PCs
occupy more storage space. Broadband connection
allows for the downloading of vast amount of data and
increasing developments in digital photo and video
equipment not only raise quality requirements, but also
the amount of memory that is necessary to store files.

• Disk preformatted with grooves and lands
• Grooves have pits to mark data
• Disk rotates in drive and a laser projects light onto the surface
• Laser light is reflected and picked up by a light sensitive detection unit
• DVD works on a similar principle, but laser is of shorter wavelength.
• Laser for BD is of still smaller wavelength.

Magneto-optical disks (reading)
Reading the disk
• As with CD/DVD/BD, laser is reflected off surface of rotating disk.
• Laser light is polarized – all wave oscillations are in the same plane.
• Reflected laser light has polarization changed depending on magnetic
orientation of point being scanned.
