INTRODUCTION
Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a next generation
optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association
(BDA), a group of leading consumer electronics and PC
companies(including Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic,
Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson).
But before coming on the Blu-ray technology I will like to explain some
previously used optical storage mediums.
ABOUT CDs
44,100 samples/channel/second x 2 bytes/sample x 2 channels x 74 minutes x
60 seconds/minute = 783,216,000 bytes
• A CD can store up to 74 minutes of music
• Fairly simple piece of plastic
• About 1.2 mm thick and 12 cm diameter
• Injection-molded piece of clear polycarbonate plastic
• Uses a red LASER of wavelength 780nm to read data track
Construction of CD
ABOUT CDs
• A CD has a single spiral track of data
• The data track is approximately 0.5 microns wide, with 1.6 microns
separating one track from the next
Data Track On CD
Bumps On CD
ABOUT DVDs
• DVDs are of the same diameter and thickness as CDs
• Made using some of the same materials and manufacturing methods like a CD
• A standard DVD holds about seven times more data than a CD does
• Use a red LASER of wavelength 650nm to read data track
Cross section of DVD
ABOUT DVDs
• A DVD has a single spiral track of data just like CD
• Data track is -- just 740 nanometers separate one track from the next
• Elongated bumps that make up the track are each 320 nanometers wide, a
minimum of 400 nanometers long and 120 nanometers high.

WHY BLU-RAY
The Blu-ray name is a combination of "blue," for the color of the
laser that is used, and "ray," for optical ray. The "e" in "blue" was
purposefully left off, according to the manufacturers, because an
everyday word cannot be trademarked.
NEED OF BLU-RAY
• Standard DVD can hold 4.7 GB (gigabytes) of information. That's about
the size of an average two-hour, standard-definition movie with a few
extra features
• A high-definition movie, which has a much clearer image takes up about
five times more bandwidth and therefore requires a disc with about five
times more storage
• As TV sets and movie studios make the move to high definition,
consumers are going to need playback systems with a lot more storage
capacity
BLU-RAY FORMATS
• BD-ROM (read-only) - for pre-recorded content
• BD-R (recordable) - for PC data storage
• BD-RW (rewritable) - for PC data storage
• BD-RE (rewritable) - for HDTV recording
BLU-RAY STORAGE
SPECIFICATIONS
• A single-layer Blu-ray disc, which is roughly the same size as a DVD, can
hold up to 27 GB of data -- that's more than two hours of high-definition
video or about 13 hours of standard video.
• A double-layer Blu-ray disc can store up to 54 GB, enough to hold about
4.5 hours of high-definition video or more than 20 hours of standard
video. And there are even plans in the works to develop a disc with twice that
amount of storage.
CONSTRUCTION OF BLU-RAY
• Each Blu-ray disc is about 1.2 millimeters thick and 12 cm in diameter.
• BLU-RAY has pits that are only 0.15 microns (µm) long. This is more than
twice as small as the pits on a DVD.
• Blu-ray has track pitch from 0.74 microns to 0.32 microns
HOW DOES BLU-RAY WORK?
• Discs store digitally encoded video and audio information in pits, spiral
grooves that run from the center of the disc to the edges.
• A laser reads the other side of these pits -- the bumps.
• Blu-ray uses a blue laser of shorter wavelength (405 nanometers) than a
red laser (650 nanometers).

For HDTV
• Record high-definition television (HDTV) without any quality loss.
• Instantly skip to any spot on the disc.
• Record one program while watching another on the disc.
• Create playlists.
• Edit programs recorded on the disc.
• Automatically search for an empty space on the disc to avoid recording over a
program.
• Access the Web to download subtitles and other extra features.
• Blu-ray discs are better armed than current DVDs. They come equipped with a
secure encryption system -- a unique ID that protects against video piracy and
copyright infringement.
• Blu-ray has a higher data transfer rate -- 36 Mbps.
• Do not have the problems of birefringence and disc tilt.
BLU-RAY ADVANTAGES
BLU-RAY AVAILABILITY
Blu-ray recorders are already available in Japan, where more consumers have
access to HDTV than in the United States. Outside of Japan, once more TV sets
come equipped with a high-definition tuner and more films and television shows
are produced in high-definition (which is expected to happen by late 2005 or
2006), Blu-ray movies and TV shows on disc should become widely available.
TERMS USED
• STANDARD DEFINITION -: It includes the standard formats used for video
distributions that is NTSC and PAL formats.
NTSC-: Displays a total of 30 frames per second; but it does this in a sequence of 60
fields, each of which contains alternating lines of the picture, at a the
specification of 525 scan lines and 500 dots of horizontal resolution . Used in America
and Japan.
PAL-: Which displays at 50 fields per second or 25 frames per second, at a the
specification of 625 scan lines and 500 dots of horizontal resolution . Used in Asian
and European countries
• HIGH DEFINITION -: This format has higher resolution. It displays an image
in a sequence of 720 dots of horizontal resolution and can have either 720
or 1080 scan lines.

• HDTV (HIGH DEFINITION TELEVISION) -: It is a television which supports
the High Definition contents on TV broadcast. This requires a high resolution
screen and a special tuner called HD tuner.
• BIREFRINGENCE -: In a DVD, the data is sandwiched between two
polycarbonate layers having a polycarbonate layer on top of the data can
cause a problem called birefringence, in which the substrate layer refracts
the laser light into two separate beams. If the beam is split too widely, the
disc cannot be read.
• DISC TILT -: if the DVD surface is not exactly flat, and is therefore not
exactly perpendicular to the beam, it can lead to a problem known as disc
tilt, in which the laser beam is distorted due to which a DVD is rendered
useless.
