Blu-ray Disc is a next-generation optical disc format that can store high-definition video and large amounts of data using a blue-violet laser. The name comes from the blue-violet laser used and the small pit size of 0.15 microns allows for higher density data storage than DVDs. Blu-ray Discs use a hard coating to protect the data layer and make them more durable than CDs and DVDs. The increased data capacity and smaller laser wavelength allow Blu-ray Discs to store around 5 to 10 times more data than DVDs.
