REFLECTED CEILING PLANS
AND DETAILS

A ceiling is an overhead interior surface that covers the upper
limits of a room. It is not generally considered a structural
element, but a finished surface concealing the underside of the
roof structure or the floor of a story above. (Wikipedia)
WHAT IS A CEILING?

TYPES OF CEILINGS
1. EXPOSED / CONCRETE CEILING UNDERSLAB
2. REGULAR / CONVENTIONAL CEILING
3. SUSPENDED / DROPPED CEILING
4. TRAY / COVED CEILING

EXPOSED / CONCRETE
CEILING UNDERSLAB
• Also known as open ceilings or open plenums.
• All the structural and MEP systems are left
exposed, either with their normal color or
painted.
• Gives an industrial look, while making rooms
more spacious due to the increase in height.
CONS:
• Higher labor costs
• Sound considerations
• Demanding maintenance

REGULAR / CONVENTIONAL
CEILING
• Commonly found in homes. These ceilings
have a standard drywall finish and are
made of lower-cost materials, requiring easy
installation.
• Usually 8 to 10 feet (2.40 – 3.00m) in height
and flat.
• Incorporates recessed lighting in the design.

SUSPENDED / DROPPED
CEILING
• A type of ceiling that hangs from a metal
grid below the existing ceiling that is already
in place.
• Commonly used with noise regulating acoustic
ceiling tiles
• Allow designers to conceal mechanical,
electrical, plumbing, and lighting fixtures
(MEP) above the dropped, exposed ceiling,
such as pipes and wiring.
• Most commonly used in commercial buildings,
offices, and retail spaces.
CONS:
• Space loss
• Can hide building issues
• Deterioration

TRAY / COVED CEILING
• Tray ceilings are multi-level ceilings – they start
from one height, then drop as you add levels
creating a three-dimensional effect as the ceiling
expands outwards.
• Usually mimics the room shape.
• Adds a dramatic effect to a space and also make
a room seem taller.
• Each level commonly drops between 6 to 12
inches (0.15 – 0.30m) below the level above.
• Trim or moulding can be added as a fascia in
between the layers.
• Coved ceiling is a more formal version of tray
ceilings, which are typically found in theatres or
churches.
• This concave ceiling has curved edges instead of
sharp angles between the ceiling and walls and is
often built using curved moulding or framing. The
coves start from the top of the main wall and
extend up to the ceiling itself.

COFFERED CEILING
• Commonly found in high-end homes, churches,
libraries, and hotels, coffered ceilings reflect
a classic, even luxurious, aesthetic.
• Recognizable by its grid of inverted panels
that are accentuated by moulding,
commercial wood coffered ceilings are
typically designed to work with standard T-
Bar suspension grids – helping to streamline
the installation process.

BEAMED CEILING
• Typically found in hallways and corridors for
commercial settings and living and dining
rooms for residential settings.
• This features exposed joists and beams.
• Though considered as a contemporary style,
it’s actually a traditional ceiling form.

SHED / SLOPED CEILING
• Typically found on the top story of a home,
either in the attic or loft.
• Begins at a high point at one wall, then slope
down toward the opposite wall.
• It mirrors a shed roof structure.

DOME CEILING
• The dome ceiling is a spherical ceiling that
rises up like a dome. The dome can cap an
entire room or be an inserted dome.

CATHEDRAL CEILING
• Often found in large living rooms, dining
rooms, bedrooms, and even the master bath.
• Known for its inverted V-shape where the tip
of the V is the highest point and the sides of
the V slope down.
• If the angled frame is not wide enough, this
will reduce the ventilation in the space.

BARREL VAULT CEILING
• The curves are typically circular in shape,
lending a semi-cylindrical appearance to the
total design.
• It gives the room extra height, for you can
easily frame it beneath existing joints and
trusses.

GROIN VAULT CEILING
• The most dramatic and spectacular ceiling
design is the intricate groin vault ceiling,
which is a series of partial domes and arches
creating an elevated ceiling.
• Also known as a double barrel vault or cross
vault, because it is produced by the
intersection at right angles of two barrel
vaults.

FINISHES:

A reflected ceiling plan (RCP) is a drawing of a room or space looking
down at the interior ceiling. The designer or architect produces
this plan to graphically show the ceiling treatment, ceiling grid, and the
placement of all light fixtures
