The current problem with insurance policies is that the
claims process can take weeks or even months to be paid.
The process is still very manual and requires a large
degree of human action. This adds up to a lot of
administrative costs, which result in higher premiums for
customers.
Insurance companies can automate insurance policies by
writing them into a smart contract.
When the input conditions of the smart contract change
in an insured event, for example in the event of a
catastrophic natural disaster, then the claims process is
triggered immediately.

Challenges.
The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) has been around since the 1960's,
despite a slow rate of adoption within the industry. Digital records were
meant to replace paper-based systems by creating new efficiencies and
interoperability that were previously nonexistent.
However, even though these records are held online, they remain siloed in
non-interoperable databases. Accessing them across different hospitals,
insurance providers, and doctors can be a vexatious task.
Adding to the inefficiencies is the cost to maintain the databases.
Individual hospitals store terabytes of information each year, costing
millions of dollars to secure.

THE IDEA
• The electronic patient record contains
only documents that are relevant for
other specialists or further treatment,
such as a referral report or medication
list.
• Only copies are saved. The originals
remain in the systems of the healthcare
professionals in charge of the medical
history as a whole (e.g. family doctor or
hospital).
• Patients can also upload their own
relevant documents (e.g. existing
allergies, living wills etc.)

much advantages against a classic
ledger.
