Black oak is a tree that can grow up to 150 feet tall, with dark brown bark that is divided into broad ridges. Its leaves are alternately arranged, simple, and mostly 7-lobed, measuring 5-6 inches long and 3-4 inches wide. Black oak bears monoecious flowers in the spring, and its nuts ripen in the second season, measuring 1/2-3/4 inch long and partially enclosed in a cup. It is widely distributed across Alabama and can be identified by its yellow inner bark, bitter taste, and large angular buds covered in hairs.
