This document describes the hackberry tree (Celtis occidentalis L.). It grows up to 50 feet tall with a rounded crown and grayish-brown bark. The alternate leaves are broadly ovate, 2-4 inches long with coarse serration. Small green flowers grow in the leaf axils and produce small drupe fruits. It prefers rich soil and is found statewide in Alabama.
