Slavery has existed since ancient times in many societies including 1760 BC Babylonia, Athens with two-fifths of the population enslaved, and ancient Rome where almost the entire population was enslaved at one point. The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 over the issue of slavery and states' rights, resulting in the freeing of slaves. After the war, Jim Crow laws enforced racial segregation and discrimination against blacks until the civil rights movement of the 1950s-60s fought to outlaw such discrimination through events like the Montgomery Bus Boycott and Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision.
