3. ď In Bangladesh Biotech research started in late 1970s ancient time.
ď 1st work introduced in department of botany in University of Dhaka
through Tissue culture on jute.
ď RU, CU, KU, JU,BRRI, BJRI, BARI, BFRI,BINA,BCSIR and BAEC the next
10-12 years, research take place.
ď in 1990s the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and
Biotechnology (ICGEB) membership.
ď Consequently, biotechnology has been applied for human welfare
in agriculture, health, environment, medicine, pharmaceuticals & so
on.
ď Agricultural sector achieved dramatic through biotechnological
approach such as golden rice, genome sequencing of jute and
buffalo, abiotic and biotic resistant plant production.
ď In 1999, the National Institute of Biotechnology(NIB) was established
as the centre of excellence in biotechnological education.
ď Biotechnological research is increasing day by day in Bangladesh.

6. What is Biotechnology?
Biotechnology may be defined as a set of modern tools that
utilize living organisms or parts of it cell or tissue or
genes/DNA to make or modify or improve plants or animals
or develop microorganisms for specific use and their large
scale production.

55. ⢠Bangladesh, identified as one of the worldâs biodiversity âhot spotsâ
⢠Biotechnological development in Bangladesh is at its primary stage.
⢠Lack of infrastructure and shortage of funds and skilled manpower are
hindering the progress in biotechnological research.
⢠Again, it cannot be used due to lack of interest among entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurs are more interested in the import of technology to get quick
returns. Initiative and investment are lacking.
⢠Bangladesh needs a clear policy, institutional development and funding for the
application of biotechnology to solve the problems in agriculture, industry,
health and environment. Integration of molecular and cellular biology with
conventional breeding technologies can be used for the development of new
crop varieties, improvement of feed and livestock. It can help health and energy
sectors.
⢠Recombinant DNA technology would be of multiple use including the
development of genetically modified organisms.
55
56. ⢠Establishment of a gene bank.
⢠Establishment of institutional wise sophisticated laboratory
⢠Proper government policy should be required for development of
Biotechnological frame work
⢠Collaboration between the national and international research organization.
⢠Funding is a major problem in country. Financial support shall be
provisioned towards the activities from -
- government ,
private sector ,
donor agencies.
