Research work Summary
Post doctoral research:
Presently I am conducting postdoctoral research at the Volcani Center, Agricultural Research
Organization (Israel). My research aims to determine the impact of antibiotic use in aquaculture, on
antibiotic resistance and microbial community composition in the freshwater aquaculture systems, and
assess dissemination of antibiotic resistance through mobile genetic elements such as plasmids and
integrons. I developed an empirical approach to determine qualitative as well as quantitative estimation
antibiotic concentrations in the water column using LC-MS/MS, and applied assays for qualitative and
quantitative estimation of antibiotic resistance genes using RT-qPCR.
Currently, I am working on determining the microbiomes and metagenomes of aquaculture samples
using advanced NGS-tools coupled to bioinformatic analyses using QIIME, mothur and MEGAN
pipelines. Furthermore, I am assessing the mobilome of Aeromonas isolates to ascertain the potential of
antibiotic resistance plasmids to transfer to related and unrelated bacteria.. To date, the results of this
study demonstrate the direct correlation between antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance in bacteria
(Patil et al., 2016).
Doctoral research:
During my doctoral research at the National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Microorganisms, India,
I developed the multi-potential microbial consortia having biocontrol, PGP as well as plant defense
inducing attributes against Rhizoctonia solani. I have performed the field assays in greenhouse
conditions with promising strains and confirmed their role in disease suppression, plant growth
promotion as well as plant defense induction in the tomato crop.
In this study, I have isolated actinomycetes strains from the rhizospheric soil of highly fertile Indo-
Gangetic Plains (IGP) of India using bating bag technique, where dead fungal mycelia was used as bait
(Patil et al., 2010). The plant defense induction potential of actinomycetes strains was observed
synergistically beneficial to reduce disease symptoms in tomato crop (Patil, et al., 2011), which assures
a promising alternate for commercially available plant disease control agent.
Post graduate research:
In my master’s dissertation at North Maharashtra University (India), I worked with siderophorogenic
bacteria isolated from rhizospheric soil, in view of screening for other plant growth enhancing
attributes. For this, I considered phosphate solubilization and indoleacetic acid (IAA) producing
potential, which can synergistically enhance plant growth along with siderophorogenic potential.
Further, potential isolates were explored at pot experiment under hydroponic conditions. This study has
resulted potential bacterial strains having multiple plant growth promoting potential, determined at
hydroponic pot experiment and can be tested further at field level.

Research work Summary Post doctoral research: Presently I am conducting postdoctoral research at the Volcani Center, Agricultural Research Organization (Israel). My research aims to determine the impact of antibiotic use in aquaculture, on antibiotic resistance and microbial community composition in the freshwater aquaculture systems, and assess dissemination of antibiotic resistance through mobile genetic elements such as plasmids and integrons. I developed an empirical approach to determine qualitative as well as quantitative estimation antibiotic concentrations in the water column using LC-MS/MS, and applied assays for qualitative and quantitative estimation of antibiotic resistance genes using RT-qPCR. Currently, I am working on determining the microbiomes and metagenomes of aquaculture samples using advanced NGS-tools coupled to bioinformatic analyses using QIIME, mothur and MEGAN pipelines. Furthermore, I am assessing the mobilome of Aeromonas isolates to ascertain the potential of antibiotic resistance plasmids to transfer to related and unrelated bacteria.. To date, the results of this study demonstrate the direct correlation between antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance in bacteria (Patil et al., 2016). Doctoral research: During my doctoral research at the National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Microorganisms, India, I developed the multi-potential microbial consortia having biocontrol, PGP as well as plant defense inducing attributes against Rhizoctonia solani. I have performed the field assays in greenhouse conditions with promising strains and confirmed their role in disease suppression, plant growth promotion as well as plant defense induction in the tomato crop. In this study, I have isolated actinomycetes strains from the rhizospheric soil of highly fertile Indo- Gangetic Plains (IGP) of India using bating bag technique, where dead fungal mycelia was used as bait (Patil et al., 2010). The plant defense induction potential of actinomycetes strains was observed synergistically beneficial to reduce disease symptoms in tomato crop (Patil, et al., 2011), which assures a promising alternate for commercially available plant disease control agent. Post graduate research: In my master’s dissertation at North Maharashtra University (India), I worked with siderophorogenic bacteria isolated from rhizospheric soil, in view of screening for other plant growth enhancing attributes. For this, I considered phosphate solubilization and indoleacetic acid (IAA) producing potential, which can synergistically enhance plant growth along with siderophorogenic potential. Further, potential isolates were explored at pot experiment under hydroponic conditions. This study has resulted potential bacterial strains having multiple plant growth promoting potential, determined at hydroponic pot experiment and can be tested further at field level.
