This document discusses biophilic design, which aims to connect people and nature through building design to promote well-being. It explains that biophilic design is important for health by providing opportunities to live and work in healthy, low-stress spaces. The document then outlines 14 patterns of biophilic design divided into three categories - nature in space, natural analogues, and nature of space. Each pattern is described in terms of its experience and examples are given of buildings demonstrating each pattern. Bibliographic references are provided at the end.

Auroville, City of dawn is located in state of Tamil Nadu, India, near Pondicherry in South India. .Auroville was founded as a project on experimental basis of the ‘Sri Arbindo Society’ on Wednesday 28 February 1968. The basic idea originated from Mirra Alfassa ‘The Mother ‘who was spiritually related to India.
Ma envisaged Auroville as an international township for 50,000 residents on the shape of a flower. Architect Roger Anger refined the planning and designed it in shape of Universe. He placed Matrimandir at the center of this city.
Mary Alfassa in her first message regarding the town stated that, "Auroville is meant to be a universal town where men and women of al countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities”

The term “Vernacular architecture” in general refers to the informal building of structures through traditional building methods without using the services of a professional architect. It is the most widespread form of building .
Vernacular architecture has been growing over time with continuities changes, transformations and adaptations to the different social and economic conditions of each period.
Sense and Sensitivity in Architecture – The Use of Five Senses in Space makingPremier Publishers
This study intends to look at the importance of the five senses in experiencing a space. The five senses include vision, touch, olfaction, taste and auditory. Architects need to look into how a space interacts with its end user. Architecture is the journey and not just the destination. It’s a whole package of experiencing a space and it’s not just about the architect. In the process of thinking and perception of architecture there is always more importance given to visual senses than the other senses and the problems of contemporary architecture is rooted in visual dominance and may be the result of unbalanced senses system. All our information about our surrounding world is achieved by our senses and this information help us in perception and recognition. A building should bring into perspective all the five senses, thereby giving a three-dimensional angle to the structure. This study also looks at the role of perception of a space for a person who is sensory impaired such as a person with blindness, deafness, dumbness etc. Therefore, we use Phenomenology of Architecture to experience a space through sensory properties.

Creating Great Places - Webinar1_Salutogenic Design QUT
Imagining and designing urban environments where all people thrive is an extraordinary task. For a space to inspire, excite and positively transform people’s lives, it needs to be designed based on theory and research. This PPT is part one of a free four-part webinar design series delving into research, case studies and critical theories to provide you with the tools to create spaces that are inclusive, sustainable and salutogenic, that is, health-promoting.
Based on their newly released book “Creating Great Places: Evidence-based Urban Design for Health and Wellbeing”, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture Debra Cushing and Professor of Design Psychology Evonne Miller, will lead a conversation about the value and processes of engaging deeply with design theory. In collaboration with Tobias Volbert from Urban Play, Deb and Evonne will walk through a different priority each week:
Week 1 introduces their notion of theory-storming (based on Edward de Bono’s Thinking Hats approach) and how to design salutogenic (health-promoting) places.

Building occupants can benefit economically, environmentally, and healthily from biophilic design. The idea of “biophilic design” is applied in the building sector to improve occupant connectivity with the natural world. It entails integrating space and place conditions, direct and indirect nature, and nature into cities and buildings.

2. Biophilic design approach
Biophilic design:-
It is important to integrate and connect people
and nature in the building and architectural
environment where we live, and the sustainable
design strategy to induce positive changes in
people is called “biophilic design”.
Why is important:-
biophilic design is essential for providing people
opportunities to live and work in healthy places
and spaces with less stress and greater overall
health and well-being.
14 Patterns of Biophilic Design to Improving Health
and Well-Being in the Built Environment.
Nature in the Space Patterns
1. Visual Connection with Nature
2. Non-Visual Connection with
Nature
3. Non-Rhythmic Sensory Stimuli
4. Thermal & Airflow Variability
5. Presence of Water
6. Dynamic & Diffuse Light
7. Connection with Natural

14. Risk/Peril
Edmonton International Airport Terminal mural that depicts natural
elements.
3. 1. Visual Connection with Nature a
view to elements of nature, living
systems and natural processes.
Experience
A space with a good Visual
Connection with Nature feels whole,
it grabs one’s attention and can be
stimulating or calming. It can convey
a sense of time, weather and other
living things.
Parallax arises with a change in viewpoint occurring
due to motion of the observer, of the observed, or
of both. The human brain exploits the parallax to
gain depth perception and estimate distances to
objects.
The NY Times Building moss and birch
garden, New York by Renzo Piano acts as
an oasis of calm.
2. Non-Visual Connection with
Nature is the auditory, haptic,
olfactory, or gustatory stimuli
that engender a deliberate and
positive reference to nature,
living systems or natural
processes.
Experience
A space with a good Non-Visual
Connection with Nature feels
fresh and well balanced
A fountain and gardens in the Calat Alhambra in
Granada, Spain provide a nonvisual experience of
nature.
4. 3. Non-Rhythmic Sensory Stimuli
are stochastic and ephemeral
connections with nature that may
be analyzed statistically but may
not be predicted precisely.
Experience
A space with good Non-Rhythmic
Sensory Stimuli feels as if one is
momentarily privy to something
special, something fresh,
interesting, stimulating and
energizing. It is a brief but
welcome distraction.
The Dockside Green Community on Vancouver
Island by Busby Perkins+Will immerses people in
natural non-rhythmic stimuli.
4. Thermal & Airflow Variability can be
characterized as subtle changes in air
temperature, relative humidity, airflow across
the skin, and surface temperatures that mimic
natural environments.
Experience
A space with good Thermal & Airflow Variability
feels refreshing, active, alive, invigorating and
comfortable. The space provides a feeling of
both flexibility and a sense of control.
The Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore by RMJM
Architects uses fresh air and sunlight to increase thermal
comfort.
5. Presence of Water is a condition
that enhances the experience of a
place through the seeing, hearing
or touching of water.
Experience
A space with a good Presence of
Water condition feels compelling
and captivating. Fluidity, sound,
lighting, proximity and
accessibility each contribute to
whether a space is stimulating,
calming, or both.
The Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard in
the Smithsonian American Art Museum,
Washington, DC,
5. 6. Dynamic & Diffuse Light leverages
varying intensities of light and shadow
that change over time to create
conditions that occur in nature.
Experience
A space with a good Dynamic & Diffuse
Light condition conveys expressions of
time and movement to evoke feelings of
drama and intrigue, buffered with a
sense of calm.

7. Connection with Natural Systems is the awareness of natural processes,
especially seasonal and temporal changes characteristic of a healthy
ecosystem.
Experience
A space with a good Connection with Natural Systems evokes a relationship to
a greater whole, making one aware of seasonality and the cycles of life. The
experience is often relaxing, nostalgic, profound or enlightening, and
frequently anticipated.
6. 8. Biomorphic Forms & Patterns are
symbolic references to contoured,
patterned, textured or numerical
arrangements that persist in
nature.
Experience
A space with good Biomorphic
Forms & Patterns feels interesting
and comfortable, possibly
captivating, contemplative or even
absorptive.
The organic and curvaceous stairs, mosaics,
railings, light fixtures, window details and other
decorative elements of the Hotel Tassel in
Brussels, by Victor Horta are a classic example
of Biomorphic Forms & Patterns. Leather clad elevator lobby of the Bank
of America Tower in New York
9. A Material Connection with Nature
is material and elements from nature
that through minimal processing,
reflect the local ecology or geology
to create a distinct sense of place.
Experience
A space with a good Material
Connection with Nature feels rich,
warm and authentic, and sometimes
stimulating to the touch.
10. Complexity & Order is rich sensory
information that adheres to a spatial
hierarchy similar to those encountered in
nature.
Experience
A space with good Complexity & Order feels
engaging and information-rich, as an
intriguing balance between boring and
overwhelming.
the engaging ceiling structure of the Allen Lambert
Galleria and Atrium at Brookfield Place by Santiago
Calatrava in Toronto.
7. The central plaza of the Salk Institute by Louis Kahn
Protected seating alcoves along the Henderson Bridge, Singapore provide a sense of
refuge.
11. Prospect is an unimpeded view over a
distance for surveillance and planning.
Experience
A space with a good Prospect condition feels
open and freeing, yet imparts a sense of
safety and control, particularly when alone or
in unfamiliar environments.
12. Refuge is a place for withdrawal, from environmental
conditions or the main flow of activity, in which the
individual is protected from behind and overhead.
Experience
A space with a good Refuge condition feels safe, providing
a sense of retreat and withdrawal – for work, protection,
rest or healing – whether alone or in small groups.
8. Obscured views in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York, by Frederick Law
Olmsted and Calvert Vaux create a sense of mystery and enticement.
The Levitated Mass at
Los Angeles County
Museum of Art.
13. Mystery is the promise of more information
achieved through partially obscured views or other
sensory devices that entice the individual to travel
deeper into the environment.
Experience
A space with a good Mystery condition has a
palpable sense of anticipation, or of being teased,
offering the senses a kind of denial and reward that
compels one to further investigate the space.
14. Risk/Peril is an identifiable threat coupled with a reliable
safeguard.
Experience
A space with a good Risk/Peril condition feels exhilarating, and
with an implied threat, maybe even a little mischievous or
perverse. One feels that it might be dangerous, but intriguing,
worth exploring and possibly even irresistible.
