This study investigated the effect of knocking down the rls1 gene in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Researchers constructed an artificial microRNA (rls1-KD) to reduce expression of the rls1 gene. Cells with the rls1-KD were smaller in size compared to empty vector control cells. Statistical analysis found a highly significant difference in cell size between the two genotypes, providing evidence that the rls1 gene affects cell size during cell division.
