Next Generation Ethernet
Next Generation Ethernet is a platform that should deliver all of previous function requirements under on hood. I have grouped the Generations in this way because Cisco has different purpose-built product lines for each of 4 waves of technology. Counter to that Extreme offers a platform solution for a customer to build his network on. Extreme does not require different switches to address different convergence requirements, this would be cost prohibitive for most customers and complicated. Simply put to disrupt the Cisco market, Extreme must deliver more with less.
The IEEE is pushing Ethernet to unimaginable speeds, with the 40/100Gigabit Ethernet standard expected to be ratified in 2010 and Terabit Ethernet on the drawing board for 2015. Here's a timeline showing key milestones in the growth of Ethernet Sstandard's-compliant products are expected to ship in the second half of next year, not long after the expected June 2010 ratification of the 802.3ba standard.
Complexity - Complex systems are a special type of chaotic system. They display a very interesting type of emergent behavior called, logically enough, complex adaptive behavior. But we are getting ahead of ourselves. There’s a need to back up a bit and describe a fundamental behavior that occurs at the granular level and leads to complex adaptive behavior. It is self -organization. Complex Adaptive Behavior is the name given to this forming-falling apart-reforming-falling apart-… behavior. Specifically it is defined as many agents working in parallel to accomplish a goal. It is conflict ridden, very fluid, and very positive. The hallmark of emergent, complex adaptive behavior is it brings about a change from the starting point that is not just different in degree but in kind. In biology a good example of this is the emergence of consciousness. Another example is the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb. Below is a checklist that helps facilitate a qualitative assessment of the level of complexity. It is in everyday language to facilitate use by a broad range of stakeholders and team members. In other words, it stays away from jargon, which can be the kiss of death when requesting information from people.

Too Many vendors; New vendors;
New client; Team members are geographically dispersed;
End-users are geographically dispersed; Many organizations;
Many cultures (professional, organizational, sociological);

Where Does Networking Fit In? To gain the full benefits of cloud computing and virtualization and achieve a business agile IT infrastructure, organizations need a reliable, high-performance data center networking infrastructure with built-in investment protection. Several technology inflection points are coming together that are fundamentally changing the way networks are architected, deployed and operated both in the public cloud as well as the private cloud. From performance, to scale, to virtualization support and automation to simplified orchestration, the requirements are rapidly changing and driving new approaches to building data center networks.
With Extreme Networks, IT can manage more with less. Automated intelligence and analytics for compliance, forensics, and traffic patterns translates into reduced help desk calls. Businesses can predict costs and return on investment, and increase employee productivity by securely onboarding BYOD, increasing both customer and employee satisfaction. A constant risk to the network, and ultimately the hospital, are unapproved applications and rogue devices that may appear on the network and either permit unauthorized access or interfere with other devices. A means to monitor all devices and applications that operate across the network is vital. Just as important are the audit and reporting capabilities necessary to report on who, what, where, when, and how patient data is accessed.
What is SDN? What software-defined networking really means has evolved dramatically and now includes automation and virtualization. Hardware is still a critical component in data center networking equipment, but the influence of switch software shouldn’t be overlooked. When everyone began to get excited about SDN a few years ago, we thought of it as only one thing: the separation of network control from network data packet handling. Traditional networks had already started down this path, with the addition of controller cards to manage line cards in scalable chassis-based switches, and with various data center fabric technologies. SDN took the idea to its logical end, removing the need for the controller and the packet handlers to be on the same backplane or even from the same vendor.
Cost. Reducing costs in the data center and contributing to corporate profitability is an increasingly important trend in today’s economic climate. For example, energy costs for the data center are increasing at 12% a year. Moreover, increased application requirements such as 100% availability necessitate additional hardware and services to manage storage and performance thus raising total cost of ownership.

Until recently, campus migrations have been from 1G to 10G to 40G. While 1G and 10G still represent a significant share of the enterprise market’s Ethernet ports, a transition to 25G, and to 100G for large and high-end enterprises, is expected to happen more quickly than the previous transition to 10G. Furthermore, support for 25G adapters that can also run at 10G with existing fiber cabling can help accelerate that migration, providing opportunities to migrate to a 100G switch infrastructure while supporting significant investment protection.

Versal Premium ACAP for Network and Cloud Acceleration
Today Xilinx announced Versal Premium, the third series in the Versal ACAP portfolio. The Versal Premium series features highly integrated, networked and power-optimized cores and the industry’s highest bandwidth and compute density on an adaptable platform. Versal Premium is designed for the highest bandwidth networks operating in thermally and spatially constrained environments, as well as for cloud providers who need scalable, adaptable application acceleration.
Versal is the industry’s first adaptive compute acceleration platform (ACAP), a revolutionary new category of heterogeneous compute devices with capabilities that far exceed those of conventional silicon architectures. Business alignment - Over time, the proliferation of devices has created unnecessary complexity. Control Center delivers centralized visibility and granular control of network resources. According to McKinsey, “business-to-business applications will account for nearly 70 percent of the value … from IoT in the next ten years.” The firm estimates that of the nearly $11 trillion a year in economic value generated globally, ‘nearly $5 trillion [will] be generated almost exclusively in B2B settings, including factories… such as those in manufacturing, agriculture, and even healthcare environments; work sites across mining, oil and gas, and construction; and, finally, offices.’
More informed decision-making and optimized operations across the extended supply chain are only some of the benefits. Wireless sensors, whether measuring hydrogen levels in the soil or temperature variables on the production line, are eliminating blind spots in traditional manufacturing processes and delivering a constant flow of data that optimize workflows. And while manufacturers have leveraged data in discrete applications for Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and Enterprise Manufacturing Intelligence (EMI) systems for years, the growth of sensors, real-time dashboards, cloud-applications, and mobile technologies are delivering new degrees of actionable intelligence to the precise location at the precise time it can be optimally leveraged.
Yet this goal of seamlessly moving data across plant and business functions, and applying analytical tools to enable new insights, requires a new degree of visibility into the performance of manufacturing applications, networks, and systems. Traditionally monitoring tools used in factory environments are often isolated, closed, proprietary, and offer only a keyhole view of IT system performance.

Using Docker container technology with F5 Networks products and services
The evolving needs of IT and the advent of agile development and deployment strategies has led to the emergence of “containerization,” an alternative to full machine virtualization in which an application is encapsulated in a container with its own operating environment. Containerization is an attractive solution that enables developers to iterate faster. It also offers additional benefits that address the overhead associated with virtual machines, allowing for higher utilization of resources in the software-defined data center (SDDC).
Although containerization isn’t a new concept, Docker, developed by Docker, Inc., has been widely cited as the implementation of choice due to its broad industry support, standardization, and comprehensive breadth of capability. In the company’s words, Docker is “an open platform for building, shipping, and running distributed applications. It gives programmers, development teams and operations engineers the common toolbox they need to take advantage of the distributed and networked nature of modern applications.” As such, Docker simplifies application lifecycle management from development to deployment and enables application portability. This simplification is critical for enterprises, considering that there are multiple hosting options for an application, either in the public cloud or private cloud infrastructure.
This paper outlines F5’s direction on using containers within F5 technology and for supporting Docker for application delivery and security. Before we discuss this strategy, it is important to recognize data center pain points and why these technologies are critical for the next generation enterprise application delivery.

“Madness” is a Denial of Service (DDoS) bot targeting Windows machines. While it constantly evolves its capabilities, it certainly represents the progress attackers made in Layer 7 DDoS expertise. The bot author proudly states that “Madness” is the superior successor and an actual hybrid of the notorious DDoS malware families “BlackEnergy,” “gbot,” “DirtJumper,” “Darkness Optima,” “iBot,” and “w3Bot.”
While there were several publications covering the infection aspects of this bot, little was said about its Denial of Service functionality. This report will cover it in detail and compare its different DDoS techniques.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
