This is a book review on Faces in the water. This was written by Ranjit Lal. Its a nice book for children that deals with the topic female infanticide.
On Friday 4th May we continued with our current HWB topic 'Take A Moment' from City of Edinburgh's 'Be Resilient' programme. We reminded pupils of key messages and practised the Fischy Music song "Bad Times Won't Last" in the lead up to our whole school Mental Health Week 14th-18th May. (Please look out for Flyers from Ms Anstruther and the Parent Council Health and Wellbeing and Communications Groups that were sent home in schoolbags on Friday.)
At next week's Assembly, pupils have been invited to share strategies they use to cope with life's ups and downs.
The Gender Equality Group explained the 'UN Day of the Girl' and shared their own inspirational female role models. We have been fortunate to discover from their surveys and campaigns that Sciennes' pupils are very gender neutral in their outlook. The group responded to concerns that have been raised by some of our P7 boys that they were creating an imbalance by focusing on female equality issues. Rather, their intention is to raise awareness of global inequalities that exist beyond our school gates. Also in response to concerns raised, the group of four P7 girls designed their own application forms, interviewed 10 out of more that 50 P6 applications to continue their work next year and sought to appoint two boys and two girls. The new pupils were introduced at Assembly and were articulate in explaining why they had applied to join.
P6 and P7 pupils have been asked to 'Take A Moment' to reflect on all their achievements this year in order to complete their Bronze and Silver Award applications in eJASS (Junior Award Scheme for Schools. They have also been asked to give a five minute talk to their classmates on how they achieved the award by the end of May. FoTA (Friends of the Duke of Edinburgh Award) have contacted recently to invite selected Sciennes' pupils to contribute to a Case Study in early June and there may be press interest.
Pupils were reminded school is closed on Monday and Tuesday. P5 pupils should bring PE kit to wear underneath costumes at their Scottish Opera performance on Wednesday 9th May at 2.15pm in the Hall.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The Art Pastor's Guide to Sabbath | Steve ThomasonSteve Thomason
What is the purpose of the Sabbath Law in the Torah. It is interesting to compare how the context of the law shifts from Exodus to Deuteronomy. Who gets to rest, and why?
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

5. ONE DAY…
There is a big fat girl named
Maricar. Maricar always get bullied.
But at least she has friends. Her only
friends are food, food, and a lot more
food.
6. She always feel sad
about what people are
saying about her. But she
doesn’t accept it as a
negative thing or
discrimination. She
accepts it as a lesson.
Whenever Maricar is with
her friends, she has a
7. One time…
The governor announced that there would
be “Road to 50th Floor” challenge in which
people would have a chance to exercise. Many
people joined including Maricar.
8. Everyone else thinks that “If Maricar will
join, how will she be able to get up there?
She’s too fat and, she can’t even carry
herself up! Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!”
But we all know that Maricar will never
give up.
9. As the race started,
Maricar went looking for a girl. Then, the person
said “The girly-girl you’re trying to find is not
attending, ‘cause she sells seashells by the
seashore. Well, this is not a movie entitled FINDING
GIRLY GIRL !!”
Then Maricar said “She what?!?!”.
“She sells seashells by the seashore! How many
times do I have to tell you??” the girl answered.
Then Maricar said, “NEVERMIND!”…
10. … Then finally, the race started!
YAY!
After 2 hours, Maricar is finally
on the (drumroll…) 3rd floor!
WOW!
While the others are at the 30th
floor already!
It took Maricar a while in the 3rd
floor because she bought snacks
and Mrs. Marsh’ Marshmallow
mushroom.. YUM :P
11. After some hours…
They are tired! So, the others slept at
the 40th floor.
Maricar, on the other hand is only one
step to the 50th floor!
But still… eating.
YUUUUUUUMMMMMYYYYYYY…
And finally, she is in the 50th floor!!!
12. There, she found a note that says “Since you
are the winner of the race, INSIDE, you will find two
great friends.”
She was so excited! When she entered the
room, she found an empty cup and a pitcher of
water. And she didn’t actually expect that!
13. Well, after a few hours of resting at the 50th floor,
she went down and again EAT.
The staff needs to see who lost weight! It is
already Maricar’s turn. She actually gained 5 pounds!
But at least, she never gave up on her dreams
and she had friends that is like her.
14. Instead of sulking around because of being bullied,
she just became an inspiration to other people to just
think of the bright side.
