For SparkR: Spark is the most active project in data science at the moment, with a lot of innovation and big names behind it. It makes sense to explore how we can optimally leverage this in the next version of the tranSMART platform. For this hackathon, a specific proposal has been prepared to use SparkR on top of the tranSMART core API to take advantage of the parallelization and lazy execution capabilities of Spark.
For Visual Analytics: the analytics in tranSMART are useful to get a quick overview of the data available in the platform, and one of the most visible and useful capabilities for early adopters to understand the value of the platform. The recently developed SmartR plugin (presented elsewhere in the meeting) provides already a few interactive analytics workflows, improving those and adding new ones is identified as a good opportunity for the hackathon.
Ideas for specific analytics workflows to work on are most welcome, and of course we are looking forward to welcome again both beginners and tranSMART developer ninja's in this years' sessions!

The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications.
Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addresses many of the challenges faced by developers and operators as monolithic applications transition towards a distributed microservice architecture. A tracing tool like Jaeger analyzes what's happening as a transaction moves through a distributed system. Monitoring software like Prometheus captures time-series events for real-time alerting and other uses. Grafeas and Kritis provide security policy attestation and enforcement. And there are many more.
In short, there's an entire new cloud-native ecosystem growing up around containers. Come to this talk by Red Hat technology evangelist Gordon Haff and learn all about it.

ChatOps is a term often credited to GitHub, and it is all about putting the tools in the middle of the conversations. At Unacast, most of our conversations go through Slack. When we integrated ChatOps into our workflow, we got the tools closer to the conversation.
We are using a version of GitHub Flow for our development process. That means all new features goes in a branch, someone opens a pull request and we merge continuously from master into the feature branch. When we have something that is ready to deploy to a server we trigger a deploy of the branch to a test environment. When the new feature gets verified it gets deployed to production, gets verified again, and then merged back into master. This workflow enables us to maintain a clean master branch so we can roll back in case something fails.

The cloud has brought a new model for how we deploy applications. In the enterprise everything was put on the same network, ‘the intranet’. People claimed that things were safe there because they were, ‘behind the firewall’. It was easy to build a spaghetti of interconnections because everything could talk to everything. Cloud has changed all of that. At first it was just lonely virtual machines fending for themselves on the Internet, but now we have virtual private clouds (VPCs) and a multitude of ways to connect to them. Pretty much nobody has built a cloud intranet. The cloud is used to host applications, and each application gets its own security and connectivity. We’re moving to an application centric world.

Presto, an open source distributed SQL engine, is widely recognized for its low-latency queries, high concurrency, and native ability to query multiple data sources. Proven at scale in a variety of use cases at Facebook, Airbnb, Netflix, Uber, Twitter, LinkedIn, Bloomberg, and FINRA, Presto experienced an unprecedented growth in popularity in both on-premises and cloud deployments in the last few years. Presto is really a SQL-on-Anything engine in a single query can access data from Hadoop, S3-compatible object stores, RDBMS, NoSQL and custom data stores. This talk will cover some of the best use cases for Presto, recent advancements in the project such as Cost-Based Optimizer and Geospatial functions as well as discuss the roadmap going forward.

Android is a fully integrated and open source bundle of software significantly lowers the current costs of developing mobile devices (currently runs on a cellphone (the HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1), and a number of unofficial "ports". It consists of an operating system, middleware, a user-friendly interface and powerful applications.
The talk will start with a review of the internal architecture of the Android platform, breaking down the various components, and examine how they work. Then we will review the latest status of the open source project, including how to get and build the source code, and how to get involved.

Containers* have revolutionized the IT landscape and for a long time. Docker seemed to be the default whenever people were talking about containerization technologies**. But traditional container technologies might not be suitable if strong isolation guarantees are required. So recently new technologies such as gVisor, Kata Container, or firecracker have been introduced to close the gap between the strong isolation of virtual machines and the small resource footprint of containers.
In this talk, we will provide an overview of the different containerization technologies, discuss their tradeoffs, and provide guidance for different use cases.

I bet, it's not a first time when you meet a word 'serverless', but I still hope that this time I persuade you to try it out. And for those who are familiar with AWS lambdas already I have a few handy tricks and tools to share. In my presentation, I'll show how to render and deploy an isomorphic React Redux application on AWS Lambda step by step.
As more workloads move to severless-like environments, the importance of properly handling downscaling increases. While recomputing the entire RDD makes sense for dealing with machine failure, if your nodes are more being removed frequently, you can end up in a seemingly loop-like scenario, where you scale down and need to recompute the expensive part of your computation, scale back up, and then need to scale back down again.
Even if you aren’t in a serverless-like environment, preemptable or spot instances can encounter similar issues with large decreases in workers, potentially triggering large recomputes. In this talk, we explore approaches for improving the scale-down experience on open source cluster managers, such as Yarn and Kubernetes-everything from how to schedule jobs to location of blocks and their impact (shuffle and otherwise).

Keeping databases up-to-date is a significant challenge with the rate at which many data sources are growing. Open PHACTS and Big Data Europe organised this webinar to hold an open, informal discussion around keeping databases updated – from user needs, to the challenges of automation, to potential technical approaches underpinning key data sources.

Advancements in technology unveil a myriad of electrical and electronic breakthroughs geared towards efficiently harnessing limited resources to meet human energy demands. The optimization of hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems plays a pivotal role in utilizing natural resources effectively. This initiative not only benefits humanity but also fosters environmental sustainability. The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for advancing energy research in economically viable areas. Recommendations included conducting site-specific assessments, utilizing advanced modeling tools, implementing regular maintenance protocols, and enhancing communication among system components.

The proposed project is developed to manage the automobile in the automobile dealer company. The main module in this project is login, automobile management, customer management, sales, complaints and reports. The first module is the login. The automobile showroom owner should login to the project for usage. The username and password are verified and if it is correct, next form opens. If the username and password are not correct, it shows the error message.
When a customer search for a automobile, if the automobile is available, they will be taken to a page that shows the details of the automobile including automobile name, automobile ID, quantity, price etc. “Automobile Management System” is useful for maintaining automobiles, customers effectively and hence helps for establishing good relation between customer and automobile organization. It contains various customized modules for effectively maintaining automobiles and stock information accurately and safely.
When the automobile is sold to the customer, stock will be reduced automatically. When a new purchase is made, stock will be increased automatically. While selecting automobiles for sale, the proposed software will automatically check for total number of available stock of that particular item, if the total stock of that particular item is less than 5, software will notify the user to purchase the particular item.
Also when the user tries to sale items which are not in stock, the system will prompt the user that the stock is not enough. Customers of this system can search for a automobile; can purchase a automobile easily by selecting fast. On the other hand the stock of automobiles can be maintained perfectly by the automobile shop manager overcoming the drawbacks of existing system.
