l Should we see Big Data as an evolution or a revolution ?
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 4/20
Big Data – A Revolution That Will Transform
How We Live
l Predictive Learning has shown its relevance
Target example / de-anonymization
l Big Data and connected objects
to enrich service through memory and analysis
l Intension economy and synchronized marketing
Retargeting (Criteo) and
Recommendation (Amazon / Netflix)
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 5/20
Continuous Feedback Loop as a Data
Mining Paradigm
l Break away from causal analysis
« The data deluge makes the scientific method obsolete »
l A systemic approach that is closer from computer
sciences than from statistics
A real-time learning loop that is evaluated on its operational results
l Simple methods that are tuned on extremely large data
sets over perform sophisticated algorithms tuned on
regular data sets
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 6/20
Data Ecosystems and Data Privacy
l Data taxonomy: anonymized / aggregates,
profiles, usage and scores (computed)
Big Data undercuts anonymization
l Debate around data processing finality ?
n External audit (CNIL), non-transferable
n Need for OPT-IN &
shared domain finality constraint
(basis for consent)
l Who owns the data ?
n Profile : customer; usage : co-ownership,
n Computed scores belong to companies (within a domain finality)
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 7/20
A New Way to Write Code
l « Data is the new code »
Algorithms may be reconstructed from data
l Massively parallel, distributed, open-source
Thomas Hoffman:
« Big Data is getting at the core of computer science »
l Algorithms are synthesized through Machine
Learning + sub-linear techniques
l Tools and techniques from Big Data enable the
reinvention of traditional IT business systems

The Promises of a World of Sensors and Data Science
l An era of abundant scientific information about the impact of behavior
on health and well being
n Example : Brain oxygenation on IQ
n Big data techniques allows for more detailed & in-depth studies
n Impressive rate of expansion of studies & scientific literature
l IOT & e-Health: exponential growth of sensors adds to
this trend
n Example : Withings Body Cardio scale with Pulse Wave Velocity
n Smartphones will become part of our healthcare journeys
n Connected wearables generates longitudinal traces
(individualized)
l Empowering users to better control their health and wellbeing
n More information (personalized, accessible at any time)
n Better feedback (real time, insights, …) through wearables
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 10/20
Tracking Without Sense : User-Centric Design
l Users do not want dashboards
n They become bored quickly (cf. wearable quick and sad fate)
n Tracking without sense (not everyone is a data scientist)
n True in home automation
(remote control and monitoring is not enough)
l Connected devices must come with a story and a coach
n We are moved (and we remember) stories,
not data sets (N. Taleb)
n To react on an sustained time horizon,
we need positive feedback loops
l Behavioral change is hard
n Cf. temporal cycles of engagement
n Need to leverage emotions, hence the popularity of games
n Biorhythms are important :
find the right moment and the right state of mind
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 11/20
Adaptive Stress Due to Technology Change Rate
l Summary
n Adoption of ICT is fast & widespread but worries are being
expressed
n Adaptation stress : Technology > usage > understanding
« a world of accelerated permanent change »
n A fear of not being in charge (mastery), especially temporally
n Physical experiences are still preferred to virtual ones, additive
logic versus substitution
l Recommendations
1. Reduce stress though training / learning / explanations
2. Invite « real back into virtual » : leverage mirror neurons J
3. Life hygiene and detox : promote temporal and spatial rest zones
4. Leverage emotions
2015 ICT commission
Fears and Acceptation
of Digital Technologies
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 12/20
To Build a Successful Digital Experience Means
“To Include a Fun Learning Journey”
l Learning without a User Manual
n Use Analytics : measure discovery and appropriation
n Continuous feedback with IOT
l Leveraging Pleasure through Games
n Play with simple emotions (badges/rewards)
but also surprise/ …
n Cf Mikio Kaku (emotion: evolutionary mechanism of learning)
l Leveraging Communities of Learning
n Social digital experience « Virality is the product »
n Learn by imitation (e.g. video tutorial with other users)
l Learn by Doing (Montessori heritage J)
n Kinetics memory
l Leverage Cognitive Biases
n Dan Ariely
n Richard Thaler
n Daniel Kahneman
desire plan
pleasure act
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 13/20
Internet of Things and Life Coaching
l The best tool for behavior change is a “game to learn about yourself”
n Sensors to monitor yourself and your environment
n Digital tools to tell a story
n Data science to generate insights (without the burden of causality)
l Learn by doing : “Yourself as a system” => insights discovery
(i.e. discover what makes you gain weight versus loosing weight)
n This is natural for regular “quantified self” user
n Bringing this experience to everyone is a challenge
n Leverage behavioral science into digital sciences
(e.g., notification cycles)
l This is as much about “small data” as “big data”
n Personalized healthcare (we are all different)
cf. Health 4P: Personalized, Preventive, Participative, Predictive
n Data privacy is a true and rising concerns (privacy by design)
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 14/20
Part III
1. Big Data : A Multiple Paradigm Shift
Our NATF 2015 report on the disruptive nature of
BigData
2. Facilitate Learning New Behaviors Through Games
Exponential rate of change yield adaptation stress : the
value of games for learning
3. Internet Of Things Architecture
From Event-Driven Architecture towards A Society of
Minds
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 15/20
Internet of Things Architecture is Grown, not Designed
l IoT is foremost a B2B topic, where traditional top-down system
engineering approaches make sense … However the B2C world is
governed by customer usage, hence “chaotic” (in a complex systems
sense)
l Most IOT reference architectures are too hierarchical,
too “Telco-oriented” J
l One of the best reference is,
from my point of view,
Deloitte’s “implementation view”
l Still this is too:
n structured,
n holistic ….
l … I advocate for
emergent patterns:
n Systems of Systems
n Grown from usage (biomimicry)
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 16/20
Event-Driven Architecture
l Event-Driven Architecture is well suited for smart objects systems
n Scalable, open, distributed
n Cf. IFTTT : open API-based,
event-driven architecture
l To adapt continuously to its environment, the preferred architecture is
to distribute control and analytics
n Avoid SPOF, better fault-tolerance
n Biomimicry for smart home : multiple layers of controls corresponding
layers of abstraction since complexity yields fragility
l Redundant and distributed storage
n Not every piece of data should be moved …
l Smart systems operate on a multiplicity of time scales
n cf. lambda-architecture : hot/cold analytics
n Event-driven learning at multiple time horizons
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 17/20
Emergent EDA Systems : « Engineering as Parenting »
l Smart Systems are hierarchical → hierarchies of events
l Complex Event processing → move between abstraction levels
l “Human in the loop” => emergent design
n Design “conversations” with users
l Common goals must be reified (and distributed)
n complex systems (teleonomy)
n Cf SlapOS, OAI, …
l Biomimetics : “grow what works”
n E.g., muscle growth
n Smart Home example : Adhoco
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 18/20
Cognitive EDA Systems
l “The era of cognitive computing”
n Systems “grown by machine learning, not programmatic design”
n “Society of minds” - Cf. Todai Robot – University of Tokyo
A short overview:
• Reflexes
• Inductive Thinking (ML)
• Deductive Thinking
(Rules & Planning)
• “Emotions”
(evolutionary /
meta-heuristics control)
l “Biomimicry as a design principle for cognitive engineering”
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 19/20
Systems of Systems : Fractal IOT Architecture
l Smart / learning systems are coming
n Cf. feedback from CES 2016
n Cf. feedback from Singularity University
n Ability to integrate cognitive systems into
small silicon footprint is growing exponentially J
l They are embedded into “Systems of Systems”
n Learning/ data / analytics is distributed &
multi-scale
n Learn from sensors, as close to the data
as possible
l It is easier to build really smart smaller objects than large systems, thus
they will appear first and “intelligence” will come locally before it comes
globally
l Role of meta-learning loops and meta-narrative (coaching)
n Critical role for SoS (global perspective)
Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 20/20
l Big Data represents a set of paradigm shifts
n Data as code, designing emergent systems though ML
n The opportunity for disruption is larger than new services and new
usages
l Smart data empowers a new generation of smart systems,
but they must be designed for human needs
n IoT does not have to power to change human behavior by itself
n Educate the user though games because she is the most
important part of the smart system
l Event-driven, adaptive and cognitive Internet of Things
architecture
n IoT architecture is derived and built from consumer usage
n Cognitive large-scale systems will emerge bottom-up since it is easier to
derive closed-loop learning systems on a smaller scope

  • 3. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 3/20 l Spectacular decline of storage cost 1To: 1 M$ in 1995, less than 40$ in 2013 l Wealth of data sources thanks to sensors and digital transformation l New challenges (3V : Volume, Variety, Velocity) have spawn new technologies l Massively distributed data avoid data transfer with petabytes J l Massively parallel processing Flow computing, Event processing l Unstructured data l Big Data is a natural evolution of software technology in an exponentially changing world The NATF 2014 Mandate on Big Data l Should we see Big Data as an evolution or a revolution ?
  • 4. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 4/20 Big Data – A Revolution That Will Transform How We Live l Predictive Learning has shown its relevance Target example / de-anonymization l Big Data and connected objects to enrich service through memory and analysis l Intension economy and synchronized marketing Retargeting (Criteo) and Recommendation (Amazon / Netflix)
  • 5. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 5/20 Continuous Feedback Loop as a Data Mining Paradigm l Break away from causal analysis « The data deluge makes the scientific method obsolete » l A systemic approach that is closer from computer sciences than from statistics A real-time learning loop that is evaluated on its operational results l Simple methods that are tuned on extremely large data sets over perform sophisticated algorithms tuned on regular data sets
  • 6. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 6/20 Data Ecosystems and Data Privacy l Data taxonomy: anonymized / aggregates, profiles, usage and scores (computed) Big Data undercuts anonymization l Debate around data processing finality ? n External audit (CNIL), non-transferable n Need for OPT-IN & shared domain finality constraint (basis for consent) l Who owns the data ? n Profile : customer; usage : co-ownership, n Computed scores belong to companies (within a domain finality)
  • 7. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 7/20 A New Way to Write Code l « Data is the new code » Algorithms may be reconstructed from data l Massively parallel, distributed, open-source Thomas Hoffman: « Big Data is getting at the core of computer science » l Algorithms are synthesized through Machine Learning + sub-linear techniques l Tools and techniques from Big Data enable the reinvention of traditional IT business systems
  • 8. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 8/20 Part II 1. Big Data : A Multiple Paradigm Shift Our NATF 2015 report on the disruptive nature of BigData 2. Facilitate Learning New Behaviors Through Games Exponential rate of change yield adaptation stress : the value of games for learning 3. Internet Of Things Architecture From Event-Driven Architecture towards A Society of Minds
  • 9. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 9/20 The Promises of a World of Sensors and Data Science l An era of abundant scientific information about the impact of behavior on health and well being n Example : Brain oxygenation on IQ n Big data techniques allows for more detailed & in-depth studies n Impressive rate of expansion of studies & scientific literature l IOT & e-Health: exponential growth of sensors adds to this trend n Example : Withings Body Cardio scale with Pulse Wave Velocity n Smartphones will become part of our healthcare journeys n Connected wearables generates longitudinal traces (individualized) l Empowering users to better control their health and wellbeing n More information (personalized, accessible at any time) n Better feedback (real time, insights, …) through wearables
  • 10. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 10/20 Tracking Without Sense : User-Centric Design l Users do not want dashboards n They become bored quickly (cf. wearable quick and sad fate) n Tracking without sense (not everyone is a data scientist) n True in home automation (remote control and monitoring is not enough) l Connected devices must come with a story and a coach n We are moved (and we remember) stories, not data sets (N. Taleb) n To react on an sustained time horizon, we need positive feedback loops l Behavioral change is hard n Cf. temporal cycles of engagement n Need to leverage emotions, hence the popularity of games n Biorhythms are important : find the right moment and the right state of mind
  • 11. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 11/20 Adaptive Stress Due to Technology Change Rate l Summary n Adoption of ICT is fast & widespread but worries are being expressed n Adaptation stress : Technology > usage > understanding « a world of accelerated permanent change » n A fear of not being in charge (mastery), especially temporally n Physical experiences are still preferred to virtual ones, additive logic versus substitution l Recommendations 1. Reduce stress though training / learning / explanations 2. Invite « real back into virtual » : leverage mirror neurons J 3. Life hygiene and detox : promote temporal and spatial rest zones 4. Leverage emotions 2015 ICT commission Fears and Acceptation of Digital Technologies
  • 12. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 12/20 To Build a Successful Digital Experience Means “To Include a Fun Learning Journey” l Learning without a User Manual n Use Analytics : measure discovery and appropriation n Continuous feedback with IOT l Leveraging Pleasure through Games n Play with simple emotions (badges/rewards) but also surprise/ … n Cf Mikio Kaku (emotion: evolutionary mechanism of learning) l Leveraging Communities of Learning n Social digital experience « Virality is the product » n Learn by imitation (e.g. video tutorial with other users) l Learn by Doing (Montessori heritage J) n Kinetics memory l Leverage Cognitive Biases n Dan Ariely n Richard Thaler n Daniel Kahneman desire plan pleasure act
  • 13. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 13/20 Internet of Things and Life Coaching l The best tool for behavior change is a “game to learn about yourself” n Sensors to monitor yourself and your environment n Digital tools to tell a story n Data science to generate insights (without the burden of causality) l Learn by doing : “Yourself as a system” => insights discovery (i.e. discover what makes you gain weight versus loosing weight) n This is natural for regular “quantified self” user n Bringing this experience to everyone is a challenge n Leverage behavioral science into digital sciences (e.g., notification cycles) l This is as much about “small data” as “big data” n Personalized healthcare (we are all different) cf. Health 4P: Personalized, Preventive, Participative, Predictive n Data privacy is a true and rising concerns (privacy by design)
  • 14. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 14/20 Part III 1.
  • 15. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 15/20 Internet of Things Architecture is Grown, not Designed l IoT is foremost a B2B topic, where traditional top-down system engineering approaches make sense … However the B2C world is governed by customer usage, hence “chaotic” (in a complex systems sense) l Most IOT reference architectures are too hierarchical, too “Telco-oriented” J l One of the best reference is, from my point of view, Deloitte’s “implementation view” l Still this is too: n structured, n holistic …. l … I advocate for emergent patterns: n Systems of Systems n Grown from usage (biomimicry)
  • 16. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 16/20 Event-Driven Architecture l Event-Driven Architecture is well suited for smart objects systems n Scalable, open, distributed n Cf. IFTTT : open API-based, event-driven architecture l To adapt continuously to its environment, the preferred architecture is to distribute control and analytics n Avoid SPOF, better fault-tolerance n Biomimicry for smart home : multiple layers of controls corresponding layers of abstraction since complexity yields fragility l Redundant and distributed storage n Not every piece of data should be moved … l Smart systems operate on a multiplicity of time scales n cf. lambda-architecture : hot/cold analytics n Event-driven learning at multiple time horizons
  • 17. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 17/20 Emergent EDA Systems : « Engineering as Parenting » l Smart Systems are hierarchical → hierarchies of events l Complex Event processing → move between abstraction levels l “Human in the loop” => emergent design n Design “conversations” with users l Common goals must be reified (and distributed) n complex systems (teleonomy) n Cf SlapOS, OAI, … l Biomimetics : “grow what works” n E.g., muscle growth n Smart Home example : Adhoco
  • 18. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 18/20 Cognitive EDA Systems l “The era of cognitive computing” n Systems “grown by machine learning, not programmatic design” n “Society of minds” - Cf. Todai Robot – University of Tokyo A short overview: • Reflexes • Inductive Thinking (ML) • Deductive Thinking (Rules & Planning) • “Emotions” (evolutionary / meta-heuristics control) l “Biomimicry as a design principle for cognitive engineering”

Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 19/20 Systems of Systems : Fractal IOT Architecture l Smart / learning systems are coming n Cf. feedback from CES 2016 n Cf. feedback from Singularity University n Ability to integrate cognitive systems into small silicon footprint is growing exponentially J l They are embedded into “Systems of Systems” n Learning/ data / analytics is distributed & multi-scale n Learn from sensors, as close to the data as possible l It is easier to build really smart smaller objects than large systems, thus they will appear first and “intelligence” will come locally before it comes globally l Role of meta-learning loops and meta-narrative (coaching) n Critical role for SoS (global perspective)
  • 20. Yves Caseau - Big Data, Behavioral Change and IOT – November 2016 20/20 l Big Data represents a set of paradigm shifts n Data as code, designing emergent systems though ML n The opportunity for disruption is larger than new services and new usages l Smart data empowers a new generation of smart systems, but they must be designed for human needs n IoT does not have to power to change human behavior by itself n Educate the user though games because she is the most important part of the smart system l Event-driven, adaptive and cognitive Internet of Things architecture n IoT architecture is derived and built from consumer usage n Cognitive large-scale systems will emerge bottom-up since it is easier to derive closed-loop learning systems on a smaller scope Conclusion
