The emerging corporate fashion, in Australia, for purchasing large licks of energy in the last year has been the Offsite Corporate PPA. This follows a well established trend in the US and Europe, which we seem to be catching up with. However, we should ask what is the best way to achieve and overall energy solution that enables both long term energy savings and aids the transition to the future grid in Australia. CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

Good morning
I am Lt Richard Clarke Royal Navy and have been a submarine marine engineer for 32 yrs. I am currently appointed to DSTL as a Military Advisor and am here to set the scene.
Last week a couple of new start grads came in looking ….. tired. I asked why so and was told that a friend had posted on Facebook that they were unexpectedly in Portsmouth for the night and so within 20 minutes they had arranged where and when to meet, booked a restaurant and planned the night out; 10 in total met up and apparently a good night was had by all. If the same had happened 30 yrs ago what would have happened ….. probably nothing! Firstly my friend would most likely of had to bump in to me. Then we would have to physically phone everyone and, assuming they had a phone in their house (and not everyone did) that they would be in to answer. If not it was game over as even though they had a phone they certainly wouldn’t have an answering machine. Moral of the story, modern communication and information systems give you a headache!
Battles are controlled and won by those who can create the advantage whether that is by obtaining the high ground or even having better maps both permitting, better situational awareness! Control of the battlespace and battlespace denial are pivotal to modern warfare where often you can’t see the enemy as they could be tens or even hundreds of miles away. In order to achieve this you need to understand the enemy’s position, understand their intent and most importantly communicate the information to the chaps on the ground in REAL TIME!!!
Why real time? Returning to the story, modern press techniques report live often with reporters embedded in with the combat troops streaming images of the action directly in to the pocket of anyone with a modern phone. That could easily be the enemy. So how can we maintain the advantage? How do we maintain the Battle winning edge?
But the headaches don’t end there. The Government recognise that they hold an ever increasing duty of care to the troops and are increasingly, and rightly, held to account for each and every fatality. Consequently there is an increasing reluctance to engage troops directly on the ground and anything that can assist with the mission whilst achieving this aim is extremely interesting.
Fundamental to both situational awareness and personnel safety within the modern battlespace is the increasing use of drones or more specifically unmanned vehicles or autonomous systems.
Unmanned vehicles such as the ones appearing behind me have the potential to both remove the man from harm’s way, completing a direct combat role be it mine hunting, roadside IED detection or air strikes and the provision of situational awareness though the deploying of listening or visual sensors. But they are limited, with the operation of many measured in minutes not hours, balancing duration against capability
With the exception of the weapons, the energy storage requirement of such systems forms the largest payload. If the “fuel” load can be reduced the range and endurance of the vehicle can be increased ideally to give many hours of operation or a single vehicle could carry greater capability. Furthermore increasing either for example could reduce the number of Unmanned Vehicles required and therefore reduce costs for a given mission whilst achieving the output, again important in modern times and tight budgets.
However, any increase in gaining situational awareness is of little use if you can’t relay it to the people who need it and returning to personnel safety there will always be a requirement for personnel to be directly ground deployed. Increasingly therefore soldiers are required to carry personal electronic equipment such as GPS, radios, headsets, cameras and health monitors all requiring a source of power and it quickly becomes evident that we are seriously close to overburdening our soldiers if we haven’t done so already. Weight is a significant burden (excuse the pun).
The dismounted soldier now carries more body armour than at any time since the knights sitting around the round table. Significant effort has been spent investigating lightweight armour but at the end of the day you are trying to stop bullets and there is a limit to how much weight you can take out of a material and lace will not do!
Rifles, clothing and body armour have all been cut down to the minimum and food and water weigh what they weigh, believe me if a soldier is denied food, or even more importantly a brew, his performance drops off the scale. So where else can weight savings be made for the dismounted soldier? How else can we ensure that he is situationally aware without the need to carry large quantities of batteries?
What we need is something that allows [us] to gather intelligence and situational awareness whislt improving capability and reducing costs transferring that to forces on the ground and receiving real time feedback. All together this will allow for the generation of fully integrated battlespace management as can be seen in the slide behind me.
So the competition is twofold and my colleagues will now detail outline the actual requirements of the competition.
