Abstract: The swift evolution of Open Access (OA) publishing of scholarly works has been driven by researchers and librarians who recognize the societal benefits of these resources being freely available on the Internet. Especially in fields relevant to Science, Technology and Medicine, high quality OA content can benefit people conducting both personal and professional research anywhere in the world. These resources can prove exceptionally valuable to students whose access to scholarly research materials may be limited by costly journal subscriptions both while they are in school and long after they have graduated. This presentation will draw on findings from an exploratory research study that involved a survey sent to academic librarians across Canada questioning the degree to which they are educating students about Open Access research materials and their motivations for and against doing so. Based on participants’ responses, suggested teaching strategies and promotional initiatives will be shared with session attendees. Information literacy teaching methods discussed aim to foster a broader understanding of Open resources and overall scholarly publishing processes among students developing critical and sustainable researching skills.

Whether they are purchased or freely acquired, librarians should be open to sharing their resources to everyone who wants to use them to enrich their lives through education. Open Education Resources (OER) include resources or tools that can be used and modified for free and without any legal or technical barriers, and when used properly can help foster a transparent culture of learning and engagement in our communities. Abstract: Open Access (OA) and Open Educational Resources (OER's) are terms being increasingly used in educational circles. There are a lot of free, well-designed and interesting curriculum resources out there for the discerning teacher to find and use in their classroom. This workshop will provide a tour of some of the key locations for finding such resources for k-12 teachers, as well as introducing you to the ideas behind Open Access in general, and a discussion of interesting new directions for lifelong professional development, such as the Peer-to-Peer university. The workshop will consist of introducing you to the terms and resources of Open Access as well as small group discussions on strategies and issues about using these resources in your classroom. This will be an interactive session, where your questions are welcome and will guide the kinds of materials we discuss.

In this session, we present several case studies of ancillary resource development for open textbooks in British Columbia. Through these case studies we explore an emerging framework for best practices and the often unrecognized challenges that ancillary resource development poses for open educational resources (OER).
There is increasing evidence that lack of ancillary resources impact OER adoption. Over 40% of the respondents to a 2016 survey of 2,902 faculty members at 29 higher education institutions ranked instructor supplements and student supplements (ancillary resources) as important or very important factors in textbook adoption (Green 2016).
Indeed, the lack of ancillary resources for open textbooks negatively impacts faculty perceptions and adoption rates (Jhangiani et al. 2016). While ancillary resources are often expected by overworked instructors in need of teaching aids, the development of ancillary resources for open textbooks poses several challenges that can be both logistic and fundamental to open education.
For example, ancillary resources may not be shared in the same locations as the associated open textbook, may not be adequately updated with new textbook versions, may not be openly licensed, and may actually undermine the opportunity that open textbooks provide to improve pedagogical approaches.
Moreover, the types of ancillary resources required and the way ancillary resources are developed in different disciplinary settings may require different strategic approaches. In this presentation, we overview these challenges, introduce some applied examples of ancillary resource development, and provide the first steps towards best practices for ancillary resource development.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
