Open Education Resources (OER) provide many free educational benefits but also present some challenges. OER offer free college lectures, tutorials, and peer evaluations of course materials from around the world. However, some students may find it difficult to navigate the large amount of information or lack consistent access to a computer and internet, which are needed to use OER. Additionally, not all students are aware that OER exist or comfortable asking for help using them. While OER remove economic barriers to education, access and digital navigation remain challenges for some.

OERs provide free educational materials that can be accessed online, expanding access to learning for students regardless of economic status or location. There are many advantages to using OERs such as lower costs compared to traditional education, flexibility for instructors to adapt materials, and opportunities for global collaboration. However, there are also disadvantages like variability in quality, concerns about sustainability, and costs associated with equipment, internet access, and maintenance needed to utilize OERs.
Oer benefits and challenges
OER provides benefits for both students and instructors, but also presents some challenges. For students, OER offers free and easily accessible resources that can reduce costs and provide quality education to anyone worldwide. However, students need internet access and devices to use OER. For instructors, OER allows sharing knowledge and provides many resources, but searching, modifying, and producing materials takes a significant amount of time.
Benefits and Disadvantages of OER
Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely accessible teaching and learning materials that can be used for educational purposes. OER have several benefits including decreasing costs for students, enabling self-improvement through exploring different subjects, and allowing ideas to be shared more equally globally. However, OER also have disadvantages such as not providing credits towards a degree, requiring computer literacy to use, and potential accuracy issues since content is not always verified. Overall, OER are a new area that could positively influence education by increasing access to knowledge, though greater awareness of available resources is still needed.

Barbour, M. K., & Siko, J. (2012, April). A case study examining the perspectives of an at-risk, rural student enrolled in virtual schooling. A paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, Vancouver, BC.
A large population of virtual schooling students are defined as “at-risk.” However, there is little research that focuses on the experiences of these students. This case study, based on interviews and video observations of an at-risk, rural student enrolled in an online course, brings light to some of these experiences. The student was good at prioritizing, often took the path of least resistance to achieve the minimum level of expectations, and demonstrated waning productivity during class. The student was also able to clearly express his thoughts on what was needed to succeed in an online course. As more rural students have to learn online, it is important to better understand how to design, deliver and support virtual schooling.

Librarians as Leaders and Partners in OER Initiatives
Regina Gong discusses her experience leading an open educational resources (OER) initiative at Lansing Community College. High textbook costs were negatively impacting students, so she helped faculty adopt free and openly licensed OER to save students over $1 million. As experts in finding resources and copyright, librarians are well-positioned to partner with faculty on OER. LCC's bottom-up approach led over 200 faculty to use OER in over 400 courses benefiting over 10,000 students. Communicating successes helped expand partnerships and further the initiative's social justice goals of increasing educational access.
Distance education
Distance education provides learning opportunities for students who lack access to traditional education by allowing students to learn remotely through online environments according to their own schedule. It offers flexibility, numerous school choices, lower costs, and the ability to learn while working, but can lack social interaction and is not ideal for all learners. Students in distance education are evaluated through methods like exams, assignments, quizzes, forums, and activities that assess their real-life application of knowledge.
E learning
E-learning is a learning system that uses electronic resources and the internet to deliver education to a large number of students. While initially not widely accepted due to the lack of human element, e-learning is now embraced due to advances in technology that allow learning via smartphones, tablets, and other devices anywhere and anytime. The major advantages of e-learning include its flexibility, convenience, and ability to deliver courses and resources from anywhere at any time. However, disadvantages include limitations in assessments and issues with authenticating student work. The two main types of e-learning are synchronous which involves real-time online sessions, and asynchronous which is self-paced without fixed schedules.

- 2. Benefits of Open Education Resources • All resources are free: • Resources are accessible to everyone • College class lectures from all over are available • Tutorials on a variety of subject matters • Peer evaluation of course material and resources
- 3. Challenges of Open Education Resources • Access to a computer • Access to the internet • Knowledge of the existence of OER • Navigation • Too much information
- 4. Challenge: Too much information • An individual may be overwhelmed by the amount of resources available through OER. • Assistance with the navigation of OER is always available, but not everyone is comfortable with asking for help or is unsure how to ask.
- 5. Challenges: Navigation • Once able to access OER, a student may find it hard to navigate.
- 6. Challenge: Knowledge of OER • Not all students are aware of Open Education Resources. • Not all students will ask their instructor, a librarian, or even a fellow student about alternative resources.
- 7. Challenge: Access to the internet • Home access to the internet may not be an option. • Being able to access the internet at school may be limited by home or work obligations. • Having internet access via the public library Wifi may not be an option because of distance or work/home obligations.
- 8. Challenge: Access • Access to a computer is a challenge for some students. Not every student has consistent access to a computer. • The access could be limited because of home or work obligations.
- 9. Benefit: Peer evaluations • Online peer evaluations of courses and course materials can be found through Open Education Resources. • Peer evaluations of alternative course materials can also be found.
- 10. Benefit: tutorials • Students are allowed to search for online tutorials in a variety of subjects.
- 11. Benefit: free resources • All are able to access educational resources without an economic barrier • No limit on the availability of a resource • All resources can be accessed at anytime by anyone
- 12. Benefit: Resources are available to anyone • There are no economic barriers to Open Education Resources
- 13. Benefit: College lectures from all over the world • A student is able to gain a perspective on how their peers from other parts of the world are taught the same material and or subject matter.
