Nadine Gordimer s Essay Once Upon A Time
Nadine Gordimer s essay, Once Upon a Time, warns of the dangers of the apartheid movement with a
cautionary tale wrapped in the guise of a bedtime story. Although Gordimer never mentions South
Africa or the apartheid in Once Upon a Time, background research reveals she was a long time anti
apartheid activist, a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, and a resonating voice in South African
politics. With this mind, it seems obvious that the husband and wife characters she creates in Once
Upon a Time represent the apartheid supporters. On the surface, the husband and wife appear as a
couple living a perfect life and destined for a happily ever after ending. In their public daily lives,
Gordimer s couple lives a politically correct

Advantages And Difference Between Microsoft Afra And AWS
Microsoft Azure or AWS which cloud option will work for you? Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web
Services (AWS) are both computing titans with the resources to make their cloud services as long
lasting and sociable as they want. Both are providing solutions to meet the needs of organizations of
virtually any size. That s making it difficult to differentiate between MS Azure vs AWS. But the
question is: which of the two is better for my business? the answer may be a little more complicated.
Microsoft is currently the only trader to be positioned as a Leader in Gartner s Magic Quadrants for
PaaS, IaaS, and SaaS. This strategy is driving noteworthy usage and growth for Azure as there are

Gartner says that AWS has 3 5 times the capacity of the 12 14 competitors combined, together with
Azure and Google. AWS can take the capacity lead from their competitors, but one of the biggest
advantages Azure has over AWS is their relationships with clienteles as well as provides protection
and privacy of your data and services. It s this long standing rapport with them, coupled with the ease
of usage of all Microsoft s tools, which will provide a short learning curve so that it becomes a
comfortable ride for them. Let s discuss some other characteristics so that you can decide which cloud
option will work for you 1. Increase productivity: As compared to AWS, working with Azure is as
easy as you can see by yourself that how much productive and effective you will be on your first day
in the cloud. Azure gives you access to the similar tools that millions of industries trust and use today,
including Windows and Linux, Active Directory, virtual machines and containers. It also ties into
toolsets such as Eclipse, Visual Studio, GitHub, XCode, and Hadoop, and offers a bundle of third
party solutions, tools, and partner developed applications via the Azure

Connie Bertka s A Primer On Science, Religion, Evolution...
Dr. Connie Bertka s essay, A Primer on Science, Religion, Evolution and Creationism, expands on
Kingsolver s idea that science and religion have cohabited by explaining how science and religion are
formative elements that shape society and serves to contribute to the common good. The relationship
between science and religion can be described as a conflict approach which means that science sets
the standard of truth to which religion must adhere to or be dismissed or religion sets the standard to
which science must conform. On the other hand, science and religion can form an interactive
relationship in which ideas converge from a scientific and religious perspective. Dr. Bertka mentions
that religion and science can be taught in a classroom, since their interactive relationship can
constructively benefit from engagement, since they both lead to individual insight and communal
discernment. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bertka. Students will have a better understanding of how organisms evolved with the combination of
religion and science. The purpose of informing students of the theory of evolution is to educate the
next generation of scientists, so they can be equipped with the necessary tools to develop novel
treatments against genetic conditions caused by mutations, which Darwin suggested that mutations
will lead to new traits due to survival of the fittest. Additionally, students will be able to confront the
twenty first century s microbiological challenges that have advanced drastically since the mid 1800s,
when Darwin proposed his theory of evolution. Overall, the implementation of the theory of evolution
in schools will lead students to enhance their understanding of human

A Streetcar Named Desire Character Analysis Essay
A Streetcar Named Desire written by Tennessee Williams portrayed a dynamic character named
Blanche as a nervous wreck, fragile, southern lady who has a tragic downfall in the end of this play.
Throughout this play, Williams develops her character traits though her past and background that
defines her soft, spoken language, her personality to those around her, and her past that affected her so
deeply that she has nowhere to find herself again. Her soft spoken language stands out from her
persona as she meets her sister in New Orleans. For example, when Blanche tells her sister,Stella,
about the loss of Belle Reve like as, ...I stayed at Belle Reve and tried to hold it together... the loss the

When a customer buys a bottle of Champagne she buys a bottle of good quality wine. She also pays
for the fact that the wine is exclusive, it is from the region of Champagne and that is something that
differentiates it from other sparkling wine. This is something the customer experiences as added value
to the product. However, this value does not count as much when the product becomes available to a
bigger number of customers. It looses its exclusiveness. When it comes to sparkling wine that is not
from Champagne the Spanish Cava and the Italian Prosecco have long been two popular varieties.
Today, in the UK, there is also a growing interest in sparkling wine from the United Kingdom
Target Segmentation
Market segmentation is the process of dividing a market into segments or groups that have identifiable
differences between them. For the wine industry, we will be using 4 bases of marketing segments
divide the UK population. The 4 classic marketing segments are geography, demography, psychograph
and behavioural.
Demographics wise, UK has ranked all the households in a country by disposable income, and
classified them into 10 deciles. Consumer reports have reported that the middle income deciles,
deciles 4,5 and 6, averaged around 29.6% of their income on alcoholic beverages and tobacco
(Euromonitor International, 2011). This target segment has an annual income ranging from £20,000 to
£30,000. Our marketing plan would be

Administrators should remove default passwords and disable unnecessary default accounts and non
essential functionality before the devices are installed on the network. An inventory of system
components that are a part of the cycle for PCI DSS must be maintained.
Requirement number three is to protect stored cardholder data using encryption, truncation, masking
and hashing as part of the cardholder data protection. If a hacker manages to bypass the security
protection and get access to the encrypted data, the information is unreadable and useless without the
correct cryptographic key. Only the minimal amount of cardholder data should be stored whenever
possible. There should also be policies for data retention and disposal procedures of cardholder data
storage. Only store the minimal data needed, do not store the entire track of contents of magnetic
strips, card verification code, or PIN number. PAN numbers must be rendered unreadable anywhere
they are stored. Cryptographic keys should be stored in as few locations as possible and under secure
encrypted devices.
The fourth requirement states that the entities must encrypt transmission of cardholder data when done
across open or public networks. It is required that entities use strong cryptography and security
protocols to maintain security of cardholder data during transmission. You should never send PAN
information by email, instant messaging, chat, or other messaging technology.

Essay on The American Hero
The American Hero
Every child has fantasy s of being a super hero and leaping tall buildings in a single bound or staring
death in the face everyday and somehow finding a way to escape. All of these imaginative thoughts
have been derived from the past literary works by the great writers of the early American literary
period. These early writers entered society into a world of action and adventure, where one can see
spectacular events unfolding through the eyes of a notorious man of courage and feel as though they
are defending there country or saving the woman they love. Though the modern heroes are much more
popular than classic American heroes, the modern hero has rooted from these same literary works ...

In The Deerslayer, Natty is seen as and idealized youth. Natty is later seen wondering through the
forest and lonely waters and is confronted by hunters, Indians, and the hostile Europeans ; (Groliers
NP). This is an example of Natty encountering physical danger. This wilderness scout is the first of his
kind in American literature and was seen nowhere before by the American readers. This novel allowed
the readers to enter a world where they could relive the Revolutionary War, Indian wars, and battles on
the frontier.
After The Deer Slayer, Natty Bumppo is seen in The Last of the Mohicans. In this novel, Natty is
called Hawkeye because of his ties to the Mohicans. Indians of this time were looked upon as savages,
but Natty has taken unto himself the best of both civilization and so called savagery ; (Cliff Notes 11).
Because he made peace with the Indians, he had a mysterious and dangerous quality in the eyes of the
reader. In this novel Natty has many close native companions to join him in his endeavors on the
frontier.
During the French and Indian Wars, The Legendary woodsman, Natty Bumppo, is know by another

Child Labor During The 1800 S
Zach Wood October 5, 2016 Child Labor 1880 1910 Child labor was very common in the late 1800 s
and the early 1900 s in many places. Child labor usually took place in a factory working on a
manufacturer line or doing as much physical labor as they could possibly do, being as young as they
are. These kids who took part in child labor started some as early as the age of four or five, and then
kept working until the day they died. Most of the time these kids has to work as much or sometimes
more than even adults nowadays work. They would go to the factory while the sun comes up, work all
day, and then go home at night to eat; and then wake up and do it all again the next day. These kids
also were not working easy jobs, these jobs were very physical and hard labor. Also, the working
conditions these kids worked in were not always as good as they needed to be. Sometimes they would
even be put in situations where they could die any time of the day while at work. The wage for these
kids were not to good either, some would get paid very, very little, and some would not get paid at all.
Kids had no choice but to work and if they didn t work they would not survive, therefore they would
really work for any price. Which was usually a lot cheaper than any adult would work for. There were
many different place in which child labor took place in, places ranging from just cleaning houses, or
doing small house work, to a full day job with very intense physical labor.

Internal And External Factors Of A Company
Internal and external factors Dyne and Pierce (2008) explained that there are many factors which are
inducing a change process in a company, as employees at all levels of organisational hierarchy are the
agents of change though they are also barriers to it. Change happens when the forces of external
environment are forcing to change existing circumstances. So companies wanting to change when
there is fall in market share, new product has been launched, which is caught in the environmental
scan. Managers therefore will try to stay of competition, may lead to analysing own strengths,
weakness, opportunities and threats. This leads to understanding what capabilities and competencies
are existing to make a counter offer in the marketplace. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These elements like communication pattern, delegation of tasks, leadership style are barriers when
they do not aid to mutual information exchange, and decision making to aid change process. Summers
(2011) opined that at individual employee level, there can barriers like no awareness and knowledge
about new QMS, or even they may not have motivation to unlearn the old and learn the new.
Acceptance and adoption of a new work method may find no employees as it conflicts with their
existing work standards. This is closely linked to their individual cultural beliefs, organisational work
culture which also affect individual abilities, which when falls short, needs new skill sets to be learnt.
Many employees are unable to cope with the steep learning curve, as each of them have individual
differences in learning new skills, show different levels of abilities in applying new work methods
(Dean and Bowen, 2008). Kerzner (2009) acknowledged that to bring in change to any technology,
financial support to change production systems is needed and hence the most liquid form of resource
to buy other resources is also important in organisations. Apart from that there are organisational
elements, like barriers of industry concentration, vertical integration which depends on competition,
size of firm,

Properties Of Phosphorus 31 System Essay
1) Properties of Phosphorus 31 system: Ideal phosphorus system has Relatively high mass difference
between large and small isotope ratio (Large isotope: Small Isotope). It has high natural abundance so,
we can easily measure practically. It is also related to Even Magic mass number. This type of system
participates in many forms of fractionation. This system should be conservative in the process.
Generally, sources are limited to others and quantity. It may be related to the signal such as high noise
in the system. Phosphorus 31 is also little bit less sensitive than proton and somewhat higher sensitive
than carbon. It has also wide chemical shift range. Application of P 31: Phosphorus is mainly used in
NMR spectroscopy (Nuclear magnetic resonance). It is one kind of analytical technique because it has
100 % isotopic abundance and relatively high magnetogyric ratio compare to other isotopes. It has
also spin of ½ which makes spectra easy to understand and interpret. It also used to assay purity and to
assign structure of P containing compounds. By using this, we can resolve it within its characteristics.
As we discussed, In NMR, P 31 use widely particularly in Monitoring reactions, Measuring epoxide
content of carbon nanomaterials and Assaying sample purity. 2) There are so many isotope systems
has application based on the radioactive decay of isotope and buildup of the same isotope. Ar Ar

Sarty was late with his good intentions. His father had started the fire and the barn begun to burn. The

Why Did The US Housing Market Collapse
Once the US housing market collapsed, it created a credit crisis and crunch in the wider financial
markets. Due to the complexity of CDOs many people had no idea how much they were really worth.
Many of the CDOS were worthless and it was almost impossible to find the value of them (7). This
led to a moral hazard problem whereby there was an overall caution of banks because many had no
idea if they were even bankrupt. Inevitably, the interbank lending system crumbled whereby some
banks stopped lending to each other and to corporations altogether or only lent with very high interest
rates. Many banks who relied on interbank lending for money were heavily affected by this including
Northern Rock. Inevitably, depositors of these banks become dubious of their banks financial situation
and were provoked into withdrawing their money. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Positive Behavioral Intervention In Schools
It is exceedingly important for schools to ensure a balanced and stable environment that provides
safety, well being, and acceptance to all students. In order to do this, as well as generate a positive
communal learning atmosphere that empowers the entire student body of the school and the individual
classroom, there needs to be a school wide positive behavioral intervention and support (PBIS) system
implemented. The defined explanation of PBIS is a framework for enhancing the adoption and
implementation of a continuum of evidence based interventions to achieve academically and
behaviorally important outcomes for all student (Sugai and Simonsen, 2012). The goal of a PBIS

In order to do this, there needs to be a system established that collects data through detecting and
monitoring individual, as well as situational, behavioral issues (Marzano, R., Marzano, J., Pickering,
2003, pg.112); these may be a recurring, or severe, behavioral problems that happen in the school s
hallways, cafeteria, or on school grounds. To help in gathering this information the school can
establish different charts and individual folders for each student. For example, a chart for behavioral
referrals may be used to identify the student, the date, the teacher involved, the reason for
involvement, and the student s consequence (Marzano, R. J., Association for Supervision and
Curriculum, D., 2005, pg. 164). Another chart that can be useful and successful monitors individual
student behaviors; this report will give data on a singular student, and it contains the date of incidents,
the teacher involved, the behavioral offense, and the consequence given (Marzano, R. J., Association
for Supervision and Curriculum, D., 2005, pg. 165). This graph gives similar data to the behavioral
referrals; however, it is more specific aiming detection on one student, not the entire grade or class
level. The safety and disciplinary team

The Death Penalty Should Be Used For Every State
The death penalty is an extremely controversial topic. The death penalty should be in use for every
state. Ever since America became a nation, Americans have argued about it. There are many people
who agree and disagree over the use of it. The government is deemed to punish criminals, but the
main question is to what extent. Capital punishment, such as the death penalty, should be used as a
deterrent for crime. The death penalty is mostly institutionalized in the Southern and Midwestern
states; Texas has instituted it the most. While there are many ways for one to find oneself on death
row, homicide is the most common of these. Treason and kidnapping are also prevalent examples of
crimes that could land one on death row. The punishment for a criminal depends upon the complexity,
and seriousness of the crime. If one were to commit a crime of that extremity, one should have a
penalty that is equivalent to ones crime. In ancient history, criminals were brought to an arena to be
killed in public games. Also, being nailed to a cross, beheading and hanging were other penalties for
the serious crimes committed. These are all different ways of carrying out the death penalty, but they
are out dated . One never sees the death penalty used the way they were in ancient times anymore.
Executions were once public events of high drama. In the colonial times executions were considered
to be celebrations for the community by uniting the good people against the face of evil. Hangings

Heart And Peripheral Vascular System
Heart and Peripheral Vascular System Chest pain is a symptom that can represent several different
diseases from different organ systems. It is essential to determine which system is responsible for the
pain and state the severity of the patient s condition (Longo et al., 2011). When considering pain, there
are eleven different criteria one must consider and evaluate. These include the duration of the pain,
onset, localization, irradiation, character, intensity, alleviating factors, aggravating factors, triggering
factors, regularity and accompanying signs (Longo et al., 2011). These are all useful in determining
the etiology of the pain and taking the appropriate therapeutic steps. The causes of chest pain are

The disease is usually associated with a viral infection before the pain occurs. The pain is sharp and
positional with a pleuritic nature (Longo et al., 2011). The pain is relieved by leaning forward and

Another pain that is specific is that of aortic dissection. The condition is life threatening and could be
worsened by thrombolytics or anti aggregates, hence it is necessary to detect. The pain is sharp,
tearing, and severe and radiates to the back. The pain is pleuritic in nature and associated with a loss
of pulses (Longo et al., 2011). Non cardiovascular causes of chest pain include musculoskeletal
conditions such as costochondritis. The pain is usually localized and the patient is able to pin point the
exact location of the pain. The pain is increased by inspiration and can be reproduced through
palpitation of the chest wall. Gastrointestinal causes of chest pain include GERD, which is due to an
incompetent lower esophageal sphincter. The pain is relieved by antacids and is exacerbated by the
consumption of chocolates and fatty foods. There are also pulmonary causes of chest pain and these
include pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolism is a sharp, sudden chest pain that is usually

Although this is a controversial novel due to the fact that it contains a number of graphic scenes, I
believe that it puts out a very important message. Throughout this novel, the main character, Lisbeth
Salander, represents an abuse victim who has experienced great tragedy. I appreciate the fact that the
author wrote about an abuse victim and educated the general public on the fact that women do get
abused and sexually mistreated, and that it happens more often than many of us would like to think. It
is important for influential sources, such as novels who reach a large audience, to discuss themes that
are sometimes overlooked. The more people understand that abuse does occur, and frequently, the
larger the awareness will become regarding the situation and abuse victims. This novel also has an
aspect of feminism at times. Larsson created a woman who had been through so much and showed
that not only was she was able to take control of many aspects of her life, but, she was also able to
overcome a multitude of negative relationships. It is very empowering for a woman to read about
another woman standing up for herself and coming out the winner. This book portrays the main
character as a strong female, which I find to be very beneficial in positively influencing a woman s

customarily alludes to undomesticated creature species, yet has come to incorporate all plants,
parasites, and different living beings that develop or live wild in a territory without being presented by
people. Wildlife could be found in all biological communities. Deserts, woodlands, rain backwoods,
fields, meadows, and different zones including the most created urban territories, all have particular
types of natural life. While the term in mainstream culture as a rule alludes to creatures that are
untouched by human components, most researchers concur that much natural life is influenced by
human activities. This will cause the possibility of wildlife being extinct before their numbers are
known. People had verifiably tended to separate human advancement from untamed life in various
ways including the lawful, social, and good sense. A few creatures, in any case, have adapted to rural
conditions. This incorporates such creatures as tamed felines, pooches, mice, and gerbils. A few
religions pronounced certain creatures to be holy, and in present day times sympathy toward the
regular habitat has incited activists to challenge the abuse of wildlife for human advantage or use.
When productivity of wildlife decreases, people tend looking for them in new area. This step would
allow for

Rear Window Mise En Scene
The film Rear Window addresses cinematic themes throughout the entire film, specifically throughout
the last fifteen minutes. The movie ultimately uses cinematography to heavily describe the dramatic
plot regarding Jeff, Mr. Thorwald, and the intense discoveries found when eavesdropping from the
rear window. Film making techniques such as cinematography, mise en scene, sound, and more are all
cinematic elements included in the film that influence aspects of the films stylistic system. The last
fifteen minutes of Rear Window are heavily focused on the cinematic elements, specifically the
movement, angles and shot duration of the camera during the suspenseful moments during Jeff s plan
to prove Mr. Throwald is a murderer. Mise en scene plays an important role in the entire film,
Hitchcock uses mise en scene to symbolize many things; and is also heavily included in the last fifteen
minutes of the film regarding lighting, props and more. Rear Window is a tremendously suspenseful
film and uses both diegetic and non diegetic sounds throughout; Hitchcock used more diegetic sounds

Small elements of cinematography such as camera angles, shot durations, and camera focuses all help

Sound is another element in mise en scene, but plays a major role in Rear Window. Hitchcock uses
mostly diegetic sounds in order to create a better version of reality for the audience, and help us feel
the isolation that Jeff feels in this time of his life where he cannot leave his space. Overall, the

Military Drone Strikes
GPS, drones, spying, and nuclear war are all capabilities of the everyday items around us. These
normal devices such as an iPhone or computer are all part of an enormous web infrastructure called
the internet of things (IOT). The internet of things is a link between the online world and the physical
world through connected devices which can achieve physical accomplishments such as taking a pulse.
The Internet of things was said to have been discovered in 1999 during a presentation at Procter and

manufactured the term internet of things. Ironically, IOT tracked its usage of term online through

Further implication of the internet of things will destroy the American culture that was built upon an
innovative but cautious society. IOT is essentially creating an internet stock bubble full of subprime
security and the fallacy of a more connected world. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the next step in IOT
to complete a fully connected environment between conscious life and technological advancement.
Stephen Hawking himself recently posted that when true artificial intelligence is achieved, humankind
is finished (tripwire). The slippery slope of innovation is clearly shown when IOT reaches artificial
intelligence because where do humans draw the line when AI is building its own race? The American
society would inevitably be controlled by a dystopian nervous system of IOT devices similar to that of
the Borg from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Human kind would innovate itself out of the equation
in order to satisfy the unending human urge for discovery. The U.S would not conduct foreign affairs
in the same way as it does currently because our country would be more susceptible to hacking and
large scale cyber attacks from enemy countries. The right of people to be secure in their persons,
houses, papers, and effects is covered by the U.S constitution s fourth amendment. This amendment

The Spherical Image as the Central Paradox in...
The Spherical Image as the Central Paradox in Valediction: for Weeping
In John Donne s A Valediction: for Weeping, the speaker consoles his lover before leaving on a sea
voyage and begs her not to cry. Crying, the speaker tells his lover this poem at the docks before he
boards his ship going abroad. Donne uses a spherical image as the central metaphor in his poem.
When Donne uses irony, paradox, and hyperbole including the use of round images such as: coins,
globes, and tears he strengthens the spherical conceit. By comparing two seeming opposites like tears
and love as his conceit, Donne uses the spherical image as the central paradox in A Valediction: Of
Weeping.

The fruit and the emblem are round images describing their tears, the emblem symbolizes both the
literal round image and the lover s face (the tear bears her emblem or face). As the tear bearing her
image falls, the speaker fears the ending of their love if she cries, as the speaker states: So thou and I
are nothing then, when on a diverse shore (9). In the second stanza, the speaker tries to convince her
that they are still together, even when they are separated, and begs her not to weep.
The second stanza opens with a ball image forming out of nothing into a globe. A worker can take a
round ball . . .and quickly make that, which was nothing, all (12). The globe and their love represent
all, because the globe represents all of the entire world, where as, the love encompasses all of their
individual worlds or spheres. They, the lovers, have their own worlds, and like in The Good Morrow
their two worlds become one, where the power of love binds the two hemispheres (in The Good

A Time By Nandine Gordimer And The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
Speech 2015
Have you ever wondered why our society is built on about what other people think? Well it s probably
because they re too afraid to stand up for what they think is right. During our generation the use of
fiction has influenced us in such a way that it can mirror and reflect the fears that plagues our society
to this very day. Two short stories that display this is Once Upon a Time by Nandine Gordimer and
The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. The writers creation behind these stories helped engage people s
minds and enlightened them to the social concerns in a certain way that reality could not. They shaped
fiction into a whole new direction that it reflected the cultural values, societal fears and the current
events for the public to envision. Yet it also provided a mirror for real life.
The short story Once Upon a Time was authored by a South African writer Nandine Gordimer
originally published in 1989. The story is based upon how people can create their own downfall at
which they cannot allow themselves to be ruled by fear all the time. The story politically relates to the
apartheid which was a system of racial segregation. It was enforced through legislation by the
National Party, who were the reigning party in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. It was then that the
rights of the black inhabitants of South Africa had been decreased. Yet the white supremacy and
Afrikaner minority rule was still maintained. Gordimer was born in a small South African town in the
1930s.

Compliance and Enforcement mechanism and its effectiveness to deal with the problem
The Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) sets down minimum
standards for many forms of intellectual property (IP) regulation as applied to nationals of other WTO
Members. It is s an international agreement administered by the World Trade Organization (WTO)
that.
Scenario in India:
In 1994 TRIPS (The agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) came into

In India, a combined civil action for infringement of trademark and passing off can be initiated. For
sustaining a civil or criminal action against violation of trademarks in India registration of a trademark
is not a pre requisite.
Infringement:
These are the violation of the exclusive rights given to the proprietor who has registered the trade

unsolicited benefits without permission or authorization from the proprietor who has registered the

Total Quality Management Is Defined As A Companywide Essay
Total quality management is defined as a companywide effort to continually improve the ways people,
machines, and systems accomplish work. Management gurus William Edwards Deming, Joseph
Moses Juran, and Philip Bayard Crosby and their philosophies on improving quality and performance
excellence lead to frameworks. The U.S. Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the
international ISO 9000 certification and the Six Sigma concept are frame works known worldwide. By
implementing these frameworks and concepts, companies have improved overall quality from the
products and services as well as improving the employees and customers standard of living. When the
company goes to implement total quality management, some of its core values are driven in order to
improve the quality of the company. Those values are having methods and processes designed to meet
the needs of internal and external customers, giving every employee in the organization training in
quality, having quality designed into a product or service so that errors are prevented from occurring,
rather than being detected and corrected in an error prone product or service, the organization
promotes cooperation with vendors, suppliers, and customers to improve quality and hold down cost,
and managers measure progress with feedback based on data. (Page 41 42, Noe)

Pros And Cons Of Drug Legalization
Pros and Cons of Drug Legalization With the onslaught of states slowly legalizing the
commercialization and use of marijuana after the passing of sanctioning initiatives led by Colorado
and Washington in 2012, societal attitudes have begun to support this movement in the
decriminalization of marijuana for personal use. Based on the 2014 midterms, momentum for this
change has been shown in different parts of the U.S., with states such as Oregon, Alaska, and
Washington D.C. joining this cause. It is safe to assume that several other states will soon follow suit,
with ballot initiatives set for 2016 in states such as: Massachusetts, California, Missouri, Hawaii,
Maine, Nevada, and Arizona (Becker, 2014). However, the long standing debate still stands, is this
change for the better? In a world with less restrictions on illegal drugs such as marijuana, would the
pros outweigh the cons? Although the answer may not be clear cut, considering the arguments made
by both the supporting side and the opposing side of marijuana legalization for public consumption
will help us create an opinion on what values should be taken priority on when it comes to the
consequences related to advocating this movement. Based on the arguments made from the
perspective of a supporter in marijuana legalization, complete legalization would bring an end to illicit
dealings on the streets, as there would be no reason for consumers to interact with shady sellers when
it s already offered commercially.

Black and White People s Contrasting Ideas About Wealth...
In the poem Nikki Rosa by Nikki Giovanni, the poet communicates through her childhood memories
her belief that white people and black people have fundamentally different ideas about wealth and
happiness. Along with her words, she uses structure, tone and imagery to convey her belief that white
people and black people see their personal life experiences differently. Wealth for black people is love,
family, and togetherness, not tangible items. A sense of community and acceptance of one another are
more valuable than having even a private toilet. White people see black wealth as a hard life and focus
on the tangible things that are missing (i.e., a toilet or a bathtub) rather than the feelings of happiness
about being together. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
white people s perceptions of that memory. The author uses tone and images throughout to compare
and contrast the concepts of black wealth and a hard life . The author combines the use of images with
blunt word combinations to make her point. For example, you always remember things like living in
Woodlawn/with no inside toilet (line 3). This image evokes the warmth of remembering a special
community with the negative of having to use outdoor facilities. Another example of this combination
of tone and imagery is how good the water felt/ when you got your bath from one/ of those/ big tubs
that folk in chicago barbecue in (line 9). Again, the poet s positive memory of feeling fresh after her
bath is combined with the fact that she had to bathe in a barbecue drum. Images are vital to the poem s
meaning. They evoke the reader s emotions and show us that love is more valuable than all things, and
money does not define happiness. This is demonstrated by the images as well as the tone of the poem.
The author shares though you re poor it isn t poverty that/ concerns you/ and though they fought a lot/
it isn t your father s drinking that makes any difference/ but only that everybody is together (line 23
24). The images and tone in this quote are powerful and impress upon the reader the strong sense of
family togetherness the poet experienced, in

How Does The Outsiders Describe Johnny
Johnny Cade literally is the main character in the book, The Outsiders in a subtle way. He for the most
part is described as a puppy that s been actually kicked too sort of many times. Even though he
particularly is only sixteen, Johnny definitely has been scared by the Socs to the point of carrying a
switchblade in his pocket in a big way. One of Johnny s inspirations for all intents and purposes is
Dallas Winston and his ability to definitely get through life without family or parents. He is happy
when Dally tells him he is proud of Johnny right before he dies, which mostly is fairly significant.
Brave is used to describe Johnny due to the fact he protected himself and ponyboy when a group of
Socs literally tried to attack them in a subtle way. Also, Johnny spared his life to help the kids out of
the burning church resulting in fatal burns on his face and generally safe kids in a subtle way. Earlier
in the story, Johnny stands up to his idol asking him to stop harassing the girls they literally met at the
movies. Bravery can also be used to describe how Johnny can generally be beat down and still get

Hamid, through his choice of names, brilliantly doubles his characters as motifs. All the significant
characters have a symbolic identity and thus, he is simultaneously telling two stories, but not in the
traditional sense expected of a frame story, for this is not a story within a story, but rather, a story
behind a story. The frame takes Changez back to the past, but when he finishes retelling the past, the
frame is no more and the reader is back in the present. Therefore, when the past is put in conjunction
with the happenings in the cafe, only one story is being told. The second story is conveyed through the
interaction of the motifs and requires a little intuition (not that much) on the reader s part to decipher
its meaning. In using the motifs to convey a variety of messages, the relationship between Changez
and Erica is especially saturated with clues of their secret identities. Erica had only one previous lover,
Chris, her childhood sweetheart who died of cancer in late adolescence and whom she is never able to
let go. Initially, she was severely depressed but eventually recovered from the ordeal. However, as
Erica s intimacy with Changez grows, so does her feeling of nostalgia. The September 11 attacks

Dwight D. Eisenhower s Speech
Dwight D. Eisenhower was one of Americas most influential presidents. He ended his successful
public career with a farewell speech outlining the growth of the nation and warnings about the future.
Firstly, I will examine the effectiveness of Eisenhower s speech.
I found his speech to be well written, it held my attention and gave a clear message to protect the
future of the nation and its resources. I define a well written speech as one that can keep an audience
listening and wanting more. An effective speech must also have a clear message, and not contradict
itself. Eisenhower s speech concluded his second term as President on a good note, and it gave the
nation critical information on national defense, innovation, and the future for our people. Eisenhower s
speech gave a clear message of national pride while also giving advice on our scientific and military
future.
Now I will discuss the location and historical significance of the speeches. Eisenhower televised his
speech live from the White House. This use of technology allowed him to reach a wide audience,
some of which who would not have been able to attend his speech. The historical significance of his
speech was the long successful presidency that he was handing over to the much younger John F.

The Reflection Of Achieving College Success In College
Achieving College Success has been a very positive journey for me. Prior to the course, I was mostly
a positive thinker, and had overcome several things in my life. However, the class provided me with
strategies useful in pushing forward in all life circumstances. Many negative thoughts run through my
head, as is true for everyone else. It was important to know how to control them and use my negative
experiences to better myself. I also learned how to set positive goals that will positively benefit me,
and to set a deadline to achieve my goals. I feel much more organized and confident after taking this
course. I feel like I can face anything and come out of it with a positive take away or goal, and
building off every experience will always be a goal now. This class gives great advice for achieving
success in all major life goals. The main, and probably most important concept I learned was the
Creator idea. This means that, When you accept personal responsibility, you believe you can create
everything in your life. (Downing, 43) I knew I could create many positive things in the world
beforehand. I had a migraine for over 3 years toward the end of middle school, and in the beginning of

San Cong Si De epitomises the notion of the traditional female virtues in China at the time, which
Cuiqiao is tied to. In the very male oriented and traditional values of the village, Gu Qing presented
himself as a catalyst for change in the eyes of Hanhan and more particularly, Cui qiao. Both Hanhan
and Cuiqiao are attracted to the promises of the CR for a better life; especially intriguing to Cuiqiao
are the promises of better equality for women that women under the CR can learn to read, write, and
even fight. This is reflected in the scene when Cuiqiao notices Gu Qing s ability to sew his own
clothes. She tells him she is impressed by his ability, to which he replies that women in the South
(Communist camp) cut their hair, and become soldiers to fight against the Japanese, just like men.
Hanhan s character in the film appears to be subtly comical, as well as rather silent and expressionless
throughout the majority of the film. As Hanhan got more acquainted with Gu Qing, he also got more
verbal. This reflects Hanhan s possible oppression of being unable to voice his own opinions, as well
as suggesting his character being overwhelmed by his living condition and social boundaries. He

Oedipus As A Tragic Hero
Although not all who wander or deviate from the path are lost, some clearly are. When Oedipus, the
eponymous character of Sophocles tragedy Oedipus Rex, first learns that he is destined to kill his
father and marry his mother, he abandons his home intent on never returning in order to avoid meeting
his fate. Unbeknownst to the tragic hero, before the curtain s rise, the prophecy has already been
fulfilled. Consequently, due to the underlying corruption in Thebes, the people are perishing of a
plague that will not cease until the man responsible for the death of the previous Theban King, King
Laius, is identified and brought to justice. This urgency propels Oedipus to discover that his biological

The significance of this theme is conveyed through Sophocles and Shakespeare s usage of dialog,
characterization, and symbolism. To start, Sophocles and Shakespeare utilize dialog to illustrate the
theme of exile within their respective works. Attempting to ease Oedipus s mind by convincing him
that he has nothing to fear in the predictions of the oracles, Jocasta gives the ironic example of the plot
to kill her own infant son to avoid a similar prophecy. Sophocles dialog for Jocasta states, But Laius,/
so the report goes at least, was killed by strangers,/ thieves, at a place where three roads meet ... [M]y
son / he wasn t three days old and the boy s father/ fastened his ankles, had a henchman fling him
away on a barren, trackless mountain./ There, you see? (787 793). Although exile, or at least the threat
of exile, is prevalently addressed within the dialog of both works, Jocasta s rashness to murder her
child is jarring, even more so due to the inappropriately comforting tone with which Jocasta
retrospects on such a sinister deed. Likewise, King Lear responds irrationally when he promptly
arranges a marriage for Cordelia to the King of France after Cordelia admits that she loves her father
only to the extent that it is appropriate for a daughter to love her father. Shakespeare s written dialog
for Lear reads, Let her be thine, for we/ Have no such daughter, nor shall ever see/That face of hers

Often it is alleged, love is the most wonderful thing that can ensue to a person. People are onto special
aura when they are in love. This feeling not only impinges on humans but the heavenly souls are also
pretentious with same. One such love tale is of Radha and Krishna.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu has incarnated in eight forms to visit mother Earth and to
teach humans about the true meaning of life. Lord Krishna is the eight and last form of Lord Vishnu
incarnation. He takes birth in Gokul. Krishna was the most handsome man of Gokul. He had that rainy

Radha was more gorgeous and purest soul than Krishna. Women of entire universe were crazy in
Krishna s love and wanted to marry him, but Krishna fell for Radha. Both the souls carve up eternal
love, respect and bond for each other that no one could ever match.
Humanly issues that prevented the two to become one were many. It is often said that Radha was 10
years older to Krishna. She was also engaged to some one is also one myth that comes in tale. Their
family status was furthermore not matched to that of Krishna s family. Back in that time these facts
were not only details but also the essentials factors that were considered before two people get
married. But here we are talking about the love of two entirely special souls that were far from all the
obligations of world and are already connected with their hearts.
But how can we forget that the Radha and Krishna were in form (avatar) of humans back then. Their
families did not accept their proposal of getting married and spent rest of their lives together. Their
love was not dependent for anyone s

The Importance Of Prenatal Care
The Importance of Prenatal Care Pregnancy can either be the most wonderful time in a woman s life
or the scariest and quite often it is both at the same time. One of the first things that most women do
when they become pregnant or even before they become pregnant is focus on their prenatal care. This
time in the womb is very important in a baby s development and taking care of the body is something
that is extremely beneficial to the wellbeing of a newborn. Prenatal care is probably one of the most
important parts of pregnancy in general. There are many things that women can do in order to get the
prenatal care that is needed in order to prevent diseases of the mother that can lead to birth defects of
the child and long term problems for the mother as well. The first thing that should be done when
becoming pregnant is to visit a doctor. The doctor will administer a blood test to ensure the pregnancy
and get started on prenatal care. They will ask about the patient s medical history and gynecological
history as well as run tests. Throughout the pregnancy, visits to the doctor are vital. They are spread
out at first and toward the end of the pregnancy will be more frequent. During these visits patients can
ask questions and voice concerns they have with the pregnancy as well as being able to see
ultrasounds and running tests to make sure everything is okay with the child and mother. According to
an article in the European Journal of Public Health, Timely and accurate

YouTube is also a big cash cow for Google because the amount of advertisement space bought on
YouTube is ridiculous. Some people make a living just by uploading videos on their YouTube channel,
just imagine how much the actual company is making off these deals. In 2012, Google had a total of
$792 million in amortization expense of intangible assets. Goodwill Google tests their goodwill for
impairment at least annually or more frequently if events or changes in circumstances indicate that this
asset may be impaired. Google found no goodwill impairment in any of the years presented. At the
end of 2012, Google reported an estimated $12.8 billion in goodwill. Depreciation Methods Google

compute depreciation using the straight line method over the estimated useful lives of the assets;
usually two to five years and they depreciate buildings over periods up to 25 years. They amortize
leasehold improvements over the shorter of the remaining lease term or the estimated useful lives of
the assets. Construction in progress is related to the construction or development of property,
including land and equipment that have not yet been placed in service for their intended use.

Assess the Sociological Explanations of the Relationship...
Assess the sociological explanations of the relationship between globalisation and religion. 33 marks
Secularisation theory has argued that modernisation has undermined religion. The importance of
science and technology on economic development and rational worldview on which they depend on
are seen as destroying the belief in supernatural. However religion can contribute to development, but
most recently sociologists have examined what role religion may play in development in today s
globalising world. This can be seen in India. Globalisation has brought rapid economic growth and has
seen India become a more important player in the world political stage. It has brought prosperity to
some, notably the Indian middle class. Nanda shows ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nanda notes that the Indians success in the global market have attributed to Hindu values. These are
constantly promoted by media and politicians. Ultra nationalism, worshiping Hindu gods and India
itself has become a civil religion. In recent years the East Asia tiger economies such as Korea and
Singapore are now becoming industrialised. Also China has become a major global power.
Sociologists argue that this success is because of religion acting similar to Calvinism. Redding sees
their post Confucian values as encouraging, similar to the protestant work ethic. Similarly Berger
argues that Pentecostalism in Latin America acts as a functional equivalent to Weber s protestant ethic.
He says that they embrace the work ethic and lifestyle of Calvinists aspect of life which in result its
members continue to prosper. However Berger underlines Weber s point that religious ideas alone are
not enough to produce economic development. He says that natural resources are also needed. For
example while Protestantism has grown in northern Brazil, the religion lacks resources and remains
backwards. By contrast, the south, which is developing rapidly, has both a work ethic derived from
Pentecostalism and the necessary resources. Christianity has also become globalised. Lehmann says
that it has done this by accompanying globalisations, imposed my indigenous population and in the
past 100 years it has spread because of its popular following. The symbols and

House Of The Scorpion Analysis
I believe utopias do not actually exist. It s like how no one is absolutely perfect. There are many books
and short stories that make this clear. For example, House of the Scorpion by Nancy
Farmer, Animal Farm by George Orwell, and The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. This
stories show the defenent truth that utopias simply do not exist in real life, just our imagination.
Nancy Farmer shows readers through her book The House of the Scorpion that utopias are not real. A
person cannot create their utopia by themselves; they might want servants/slave/workers to do their
work. In this case, El Patrόn uses clones, eejits, Farm Patrol, and servants etc. to do work and make
him live longer so he can be in control for as long as he can. It ... Show more content on

He would trap incoming ships and force the passengers to be hunted by the General.
The story is told from the perspective of the first survivor of his game . Rainsford is a famous hunter
that fell off a ship and swam to the island. At first he refused to be the General game , but he soon
realized he had no choice. Rainsford tricks the General and the General turns in to Rainsford s game.
General Zaroff idea of utopia was murder so he would not be bored. Also, he had a servant named
Ivan that he treated poorly. He gets what he deserves when he loses the game to Rainsford. His utopia
backfires when he lets his guard down and is killed. He didn t think he could ever be imperfect and
lose the game. This is not a utopia because people get killed, a servant gets treated poorly, and the
creator of the utopia dies. Connell shows evidence through a fictional story that utopias do not and
cannot exist; it is not possible.
Utopias are not possible. This fictional stories replicate what would happen if someone tried to create
a utopia in real life. Many people have tried to create utopias, such as Hitler. There are many people
who tried to create a perfect world and failed. There are tons of evidence that it is not

Shoot The Ball
Have you ever seen someone shoot the ball from half court before. I am going to be talking about
playing a game of basketball and shooting from the three, half court , and dunking the ball. Also i am
going to be telling you how to play the game of basketball. I have been playing basketball since i was
9 years old. I know how to shoot the ball from the three point line and make it every time. It just
depends on how tall you are and how high the hoop is that you are playing on. My dad taught me how
to play and shoot the ball. Also he taught me how to dribble the ball while looking at the person who
is guarding me. The time we went to the championship i was the first person to score the first five
points in that game. I know how to dunk while playing basketball. I know how to because i can jump
high and throw it in the hoop. But how you play you have to five people on each team. I am always by
the hoop so i can dunk the ball when it gets passed to me. Almost every time i play i usually get the

Human Resource Practices With Business Goals
In today s ever increasing competitive business environment, Human Resource practices with business
outcomes in mind is a necessary first step in aligning business goals with employee motives, a well
rounded compensation plan precedes attainment of these business goals(Martocchio 3). As can be seen
by this statement, compensation is a major concern for all players in the business world today. As a
matter of fact, if a company fails to properly manage their compensation package they will find
themselves being left behind by the competition. In particular, what exactly does being left behind in
compensation and benefits mean? It stands that other companies will have an advantage in attracting
high performers who can create an impact for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Concerning this highly important subject of fair and equal compensation to motivate employees, a fair
and equitable compensation system should be free of bias which can only serve to increase profits for
a company verse a substandard compensation package which can only result in undeniable failure of
such a company. By the same token, this can serve to attract employees that can truly make a
difference for the company and it s bottom line. What is more, a fair system can serve to add to the
perceived distributed justice of that company. Theories of distributive justice seek to specify what is
meant by a just distribution of goods among members of society (Internet Encyclopedia of
Philosophy). Notably, if an employee witnesses lower level performer s receiving higher
compensation than their own. Than that employee is likely to grow resentment against the company
and its compensation packages. Thus, this may cause a high performer to leave elsewhere where they
will receive improved compensation. In particular, companies would want to avoid such resentment
because it will lead to a less motivated workforce and talent pool. By the same token, if the employee
is an especially high performer the chances of that employee leaving are even greater because he or
she will value their pay to the amount of effort applied. Hence, if a company wants to retain and keep
great performers then the company needs to attract employees that can make a difference through a

My Definition Essay
The best part about being a human being is our ability to look into ourselves, and see both the good
and the bad. Sometimes we might see traits that we love about ourselves, and other times we might
only see things we hate, but we should be able to see that all of it is good. This good comes from God
making us in God s image; by doing this God gives us inherent dignity, and value. And just as
Bonaventure says we can use our internal reflections like a mirror to see God. This idea really struck
me while I was reading, there is no way am I a mirror to see God. There s no way you can see God
through a blonde haired, blue eyed, 18 year old, privileged white girl who has acne and is no where
near perfect. But then I realized through the texts of the third ... Show more content on

In this text Francis describes again that we are made in God s image and likeness, but because of this
we can t take undue credit for our talents and gifts, because after all they re not ours to take credit for
they re God s. Therefore it s not a bad reflection on myself to enjoy my witty humor; in fact it s a form
of praising God. To praise God I have to appreciate that first my wittiness helps to bring out more of
my outgoing nature. Because when I first meet someone again it might be an awkward situation, but
by making a joke I m able to alleviate some of that tension, and get the ball rolling on our hopeful
friendship. Secondly, I have to take my wit for what it is, and as one of God s gifts to me I have an
obligation to try and alleviate the suffering of others by making them laugh. Obviously this isn t
always going to happen. But, I also feel like my wit helps me to see if I could be friends with a person,
for example if I don t make someone laugh with a joke that I find hilarious, maybe its better for me to
put my effort into a friendship else

Terraria Vs Minecraft Research Paper
Minecraft and Terraria are top selling sandbox games that are slightly similar to each other, but since
their release, gamers have been arguing which one is better. Minecraft is better because of its
reliability, massive multiplayer system, and its ingenious difficulty and game modes. First of all,
Minecraft has infinite replayability, each world you create is randomly generated and infinite, leaving
so much to explore. In the game, you can also visit The Nether infested with Zombie pigmen and
Ghasts, The End home to the Enderdragon and Endermen, and another dimension which will be
released in the 1.9 update. Minecraft also has command blocks which, according to Jeb (lead creative

Four game modes can be chosen at the start of the game. They are Survival, Creative, Adventure, and
Hardcore. Survival is the main mode in Minecraft, it adds a health and hunger meter and players must
survive in a blocky world full of mobs (enemies). If you die in this mode, you will lose all your items
and experience and teleport back to the spawn. Creative removes the health and hunger bar and let s
the player fly and have unlimited blocks. Adventure is a mode commonly used on player submitted
maps, this prevents the player from breaking anything unless they have the right tool. Hardcore is
exactly like Survival, but when players die the world resets and the player has to start over. Survival,
Adventure, and Hardcore can have set difficulties. In Peaceful difficulty, no mobs will spawn and
players will not starve. In Easy difficulty, mobs will spawn and when a player starves, he or she will
lose half of their health. In Medium difficulty, mobs will be much stronger and when you starve you
will lose ¾ of your health. In Hard difficulty, mobs will be much stronger, much faster, and have more

  • 2. Nadine Gordimer s Essay Once Upon A Time Nadine Gordimer s essay, Once Upon a Time, warns of the dangers of the apartheid movement with a cautionary tale wrapped in the guise of a bedtime story. Although Gordimer never mentions South Africa or the apartheid in Once Upon a Time, background research reveals she was a long time anti apartheid activist, a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, and a resonating voice in South African politics. With this mind, it seems obvious that the husband and wife characters she creates in Once Upon a Time represent the apartheid supporters. On the surface, the husband and wife appear as a couple living a perfect life and destined for a happily ever after ending. Dr. Connie Bertka s essay, A Primer on Science, Religion, Evolution and Creationism, expands on Kingsolver s idea that science and religion have cohabited by explaining how science and religion are formative elements that shape society and serves to contribute to the common good. The relationship between science and religion can be described as a conflict approach which means that science sets the standard of truth to which religion must adhere to or be dismissed or religion sets the standard to which science must conform. On the other hand, science and religion can form an interactive relationship in which ideas converge from a scientific and religious perspective. Dr. Bertka mentions that religion and science can be taught in a classroom, since their interactive relationship can constructively benefit from engagement, since they both lead to individual insight and communal discernment. ... The wage for these kids were not to good either, some would get paid very, very little, and some would not get paid at all. Kids had no choice but to work and if they didn t work they would not survive, therefore they would really work for any price. Which was usually a lot cheaper than any adult would work for. • 17. The Death Penalty Should Be Used For Every State The death penalty is an extremely controversial topic. The death penalty should be in use for every state. Ever since America became a nation, Americans have argued about it. There are many people who agree and disagree over the use of it. The government is deemed to punish criminals, but the main question is to what extent. Capital punishment, such as the death penalty, should be used as a deterrent for crime. The death penalty is mostly institutionalized in the Southern and Midwestern states; Texas has instituted it the most. While there are many ways for one to find oneself on death row, homicide is the most common of these. Treason and kidnapping are also prevalent examples of crimes that could land one on death row. The punishment for a criminal depends upon the complexity, and seriousness of the crime. If one were to commit a crime of that extremity, one should have a penalty that is equivalent to ones crime. In ancient history, criminals were brought to an arena to be killed in public games. Also, being nailed to a cross, beheading and hanging were other penalties for the serious crimes committed. These are all different ways of carrying out the death penalty, but they are out dated . One never sees the death penalty used the way they were in ancient times anymore. Executions were once public events of high drama. In the colonial times executions were considered to be celebrations for the community by uniting the good people against the face of evil. Throughout this novel, the main character, Lisbeth Salander, represents an abuse victim who has experienced great tragedy. I appreciate the fact that the author wrote about an abuse victim and educated the general public on the fact that women do get abused and sexually mistreated, and that it happens more often than many of us would like to think. It is important for influential sources, such as novels who reach a large audience, to discuss themes that are sometimes overlooked. The more people understand that abuse does occur, and frequently, the larger the awareness will become regarding the situation and abuse victims. This novel also has an aspect of feminism at times. Larsson created a woman who had been through so much and showed that not only was she was able to take control of many aspects of her life, but, she was also able to overcome a multitude of negative relationships. Well it s probably because they re too afraid to stand up for what they think is right. During our generation the use of fiction has influenced us in such a way that it can mirror and reflect the fears that plagues our society to this very day. Two short stories that display this is Once Upon a Time by Nandine Gordimer and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. The writers creation behind these stories helped engage people s minds and enlightened them to the social concerns in a certain way that reality could not. They shaped fiction into a whole new direction that it reflected the cultural values, societal fears and the current events for the public to envision. Yet it also provided a mirror for real life. The short story Once Upon a Time was authored by a South African writer Nandine Gordimer originally published in 1989. The story is based upon how people can create their own downfall at which they cannot allow themselves to be ruled by fear all the time. The story politically relates to the apartheid which was a system of racial segregation. It was enforced through legislation by the National Party, who were the reigning party in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. It was then that the rights of the black inhabitants of South Africa had been decreased. Yet the white supremacy and Afrikaner minority rule was still maintained. Based on the 2014 midterms, momentum for this change has been shown in different parts of the U.S., with states such as Oregon, Alaska, and Washington D.C. joining this cause. It is safe to assume that several other states will soon follow suit, with ballot initiatives set for 2016 in states such as: Massachusetts, California, Missouri, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, and Arizona (Becker, 2014). However, the long standing debate still stands, is this change for the better? In a world with less restrictions on illegal drugs such as marijuana, would the pros outweigh the cons? Although the answer may not be clear cut, considering the arguments made by both the supporting side and the opposing side of marijuana legalization for public consumption will help us create an opinion on what values should be taken priority on when it comes to the consequences related to advocating this movement. Based on the arguments made from the perspective of a supporter in marijuana legalization, complete legalization would bring an end to illicit dealings on the streets, as there would be no reason for consumers to interact with shady sellers when it s already offered commercially. ... In the poem Nikki Rosa by Nikki Giovanni, the poet communicates through her childhood memories her belief that white people and black people have fundamentally different ideas about wealth and happiness. Along with her words, she uses structure, tone and imagery to convey her belief that white people and black people see their personal life experiences differently. Wealth for black people is love, family, and togetherness, not tangible items. A sense of community and acceptance of one another are more valuable than having even a private toilet. The author combines the use of images with blunt word combinations to make her point. For example, you always remember things like living in Woodlawn/with no inside toilet (line 3). This image evokes the warmth of remembering a special community with the negative of having to use outdoor facilities. Another example of this combination of tone and imagery is how good the water felt/ when you got your bath from one/ of those/ big tubs that folk in chicago barbecue in (line 9). Again, the poet s positive memory of feeling fresh after her bath is combined with the fact that she had to bathe in a barbecue drum. Images are vital to the poem s meaning. They evoke the reader s emotions and show us that love is more valuable than all things, and money does not define happiness. This is demonstrated by the images as well as the tone of the poem. The author shares though you re poor it isn t poverty that/ concerns you/ and though they fought a lot/ it isn t your father s drinking that makes any difference/ but only that everybody is together (line 23 24). Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou s Yellow Earth is a meaningful and controversial film that highlights the young and old, realist and idealist, as well as the ideal utopia and bounded bureaucracies touching on the notion of fate. Set in early 1939 in China, Yellow Earth follows the story of Gu Qing, a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) soldier sent out among the peasants in Northern Shaanxi to collect folksongs, to which the Communists intend to rewrite new lyrics to help inspire soldiers and peasant followers to fight the Japanese invasion and work towards the revolution. San Cong Si De epitomises the notion of the traditional female virtues in China at the time, which Cuiqiao is tied to. In the very male oriented and traditional values of the village, Gu Qing presented himself as a catalyst for change in the eyes of Hanhan and more particularly, Cui qiao. Both Hanhan and Cuiqiao are attracted to the promises of the CR for a better life; especially intriguing to Cuiqiao are the promises of better equality for women that women under the CR can learn to read, write, and even fight. This is reflected in the scene when Cuiqiao notices Gu Qing s ability to sew his own clothes. She tells him she is impressed by his ability, to which he replies that women in the South (Communist camp) cut their hair, and become soldiers to fight against the Japanese, just like men. Hanhan s character in the film appears to be subtly comical, as well as rather silent and expressionless throughout the majority of the film. As Hanhan got more acquainted with Gu Qing, he also got more verbal. This reflects Hanhan s possible oppression of being unable to voice his own opinions, as well as suggesting his character being overwhelmed by his living condition and social boundaries. He appears to be a caring brother to Cuiqiao, but is helpless in verbally aiding his sister s pre prescribed life of forced marriage and duties as a female. When Oedipus, the eponymous character of Sophocles tragedy Oedipus Rex, first learns that he is destined to kill his father and marry his mother, he abandons his home intent on never returning in order to avoid meeting his fate. Unbeknownst to the tragic hero, before the curtain s rise, the prophecy has already been fulfilled. Consequently, due to the underlying corruption in Thebes, the people are perishing of a plague that will not cease until the man responsible for the death of the previous Theban King, King Laius, is identified and brought to justice. The significance of this theme is conveyed through Sophocles and Shakespeare s usage of dialog, characterization, and symbolism. To start, Sophocles and Shakespeare utilize dialog to illustrate the theme of exile within their respective works. Attempting to ease Oedipus s mind by convincing him that he has nothing to fear in the predictions of the oracles, Jocasta gives the ironic example of the plot to kill her own infant son to avoid a similar prophecy. Sophocles dialog for Jocasta states, But Laius,/ so the report goes at least, was killed by strangers,/ thieves, at a place where three roads meet ... [M]y son / he wasn t three days old and the boy s father/ fastened his ankles, had a henchman fling him away on a barren, trackless mountain./ There, you see? (787 793). Although exile, or at least the threat of exile, is prevalently addressed within the dialog of both works, Jocasta s rashness to murder her child is jarring, even more so due to the inappropriately comforting tone with which Jocasta retrospects on such a sinister deed. Likewise, King Lear responds irrationally when he promptly arranges a marriage for Cordelia to the King of France after Cordelia admits that she loves her father only to the extent that it is appropriate for a daughter to love her father. Shakespeare s written dialog for Lear reads, Let her be thine, for we/ Have no such daughter, nor shall ever see/That face of hers again (1.4.264 266). Like Jocasta, who indicated by the ... Assess the sociological explanations of the relationship between globalisation and religion. 33 marks Secularisation theory has argued that modernisation has undermined religion. The importance of science and technology on economic development and rational worldview on which they depend on are seen as destroying the belief in supernatural. However religion can contribute to development, but most recently sociologists have examined what role religion may play in development in today s globalising world. This can be seen in India. These are constantly promoted by media and politicians. Ultra nationalism, worshiping Hindu gods and India itself has become a civil religion. In recent years the East Asia tiger economies such as Korea and Singapore are now becoming industrialised. Also China has become a major global power. Sociologists argue that this success is because of religion acting similar to Calvinism. Redding sees their post Confucian values as encouraging, similar to the protestant work ethic. Similarly Berger argues that Pentecostalism in Latin America acts as a functional equivalent to Weber s protestant ethic. He says that they embrace the work ethic and lifestyle of Calvinists aspect of life which in result its members continue to prosper. However Berger underlines Weber s point that religious ideas alone are not enough to produce economic development. He says that natural resources are also needed. For example while Protestantism has grown in northern Brazil, the religion lacks resources and remains backwards. By contrast, the south, which is developing rapidly, has both a work ethic derived from Pentecostalism and the necessary resources. Christianity has also become globalised. Theories of distributive justice seek to specify what is meant by a just distribution of goods among members of society (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Notably, if an employee witnesses lower level performer s receiving higher compensation than their own. Than that employee is likely to grow resentment against the company and its compensation packages. Thus, this may cause a high performer to leave elsewhere where they will receive improved compensation. In particular, companies would want to avoid such resentment because it will lead to a less motivated workforce and talent pool.
