A Good Day! Super Job!
The behavior chart in our classroom does not contain the written consequences the one above does because
sometimes I feel consequences need to be modified for particular situations. Each student will begin each day
with their clothespin on green. If I have to talk to them more than a couple of times about making bad choices
like not following directions, not listening, or not keeping their hands or feet to themselves, I will have them
move their clip up to the next section. If a student continues to make bad choices, then they will keep moving
their clip up, which eventually leads to talking to the principal and calling home. Usually children do not make it
that far. For extremely inappropriate behavior, the above may be bypassed and a more direct action will be
taken.
Most of the time, this type of behavior plan works for all children. However, I do realize that since every child is
different, there may be a time when this plan needs to be modified or changed to a different one. I will contact
you to discuss my concerns if I feel your child would benefit from a different behavior plan. Feel free to contact
me if you have concerns as well. Please keep in mind that at this age, it is a lot about learning to listen and
follow directions. For some this is very difficult! My goal is to help them realize that the choices they make
affect themselves and possibly others.
Students will keep track of their behavior on a behavior log that will come home every day in their “Here and
There Folders.” Please make sure the log stays in the folder so it can go back and forth between home and
school each day. The behavior log will be in the form of a calendar and the appropriate date square will be
colored in at the end of the day. The color of the square corresponds to the color your child’s clip was on for that
day. I do encourage you to talk to your child about what colors you see on their behavior log and encourage
them to display appropriate behavior.
As an extension, I allow students to earn lunch with me in the classroom once a month. I will bring in a special
treat and we will watch a movie while we eat. In order to do so, they need to stay on green or yellow for the
whole month. Depending on how a child got there, I may allow one orange day.
As a whole, the class can earn free time every day. During this free time they may play with toys, games, or do
something else fun in the room that we don’t usually get time to do. To earn this free time they need to work
together and show me that they can be good listeners and do their best during our lessons. I remind them
frequently that they are a team and to be mindful of the behaviors they are displaying because everyone is
counting on their effort towards the same goal. We have a worm and an apple up on the board, the worm
represents the students and the apple represents free choice time. The students have to earn 5 moves for their
worm so he can make it to the apple, which results in them earning free choice time.
