2. What is Transition ?
• the process or a period of
changing from one state or
condition to another.
3. Why are we discussing it here ?
• In about 5 weeks time, hundreds of kids around the city
are going to make a transition from Kindergarten to
Grade 1.
So , what’s the BIG DEAL about it ??
5. The Change for Kids
• The days of roaming the classroom like a free bird are
over.
• Up there with graduating from KG School, this is one of
the biggest jumps in a child's academic career.
• Things are about to get more formal, more structured,
and a lot more demanding.
6. The Changes…….
1. Half day to full day
2. Eating lunch at school everyday. Lunches return half eaten.
3. Having their own desks with their own things instead of tables
and carpet squares
4. New teachers and new friends
5. Varied teaching strategies and pedagogy
6. Shorter play time
8. Parents can help their child adjust to the academic
expectations of first grade by reviewing skills they
learned in kindergarten. During the break, parents
can take advantage of learning opportunities.
1.Study current skills and Reinforce them
9. 2.Get familiar with the school
Before the first day of school, visit the school with
your child so that the route, the building, and
school surroundings become familiar. Most of the
schools do have Orientation / Open Day for
parents, make sure your child is part of the
Orientation. Let the child meet the class teacher
and visit the classroom.
10. 3.Start the routine early
About a week or so before the start of school,
begin putting your child to bed at a normal time for
a school night. For a week before school starts, be
sure your child gets up, is dressed and fed like a
regular school morning.
11. 4.Practice being organized
Some children have difficulty keeping track of their
belongings. They do not know what is theirs. They
need practice to get dressed and to get organized.
12. 5. Let your child be a part of the planning
Children need to see what mom and dad have
purchased for them. This is necessary so that they
can recognize it at school.
13. 6.Prepare your child to be Independent
Increased responsibility and expectations are
another major change for kindergarten students.
They are used to having very little homework, and
they are usually always in groups when working in
class.
14. 7. Contact the teacher
If your child is struggling, or has an issue at home ,
let his or her teacher know about it.
15. 8.Share your memories
Share your own positive stories about school.
Recall memories of your childhood when you were
in first grade and how much you enjoyed it.
16. 9.Use Positive Words
Not goodbye, see you later. Saying goodbye can
be tough for some children.
Instead of saying goodbye, perhaps say something
like “See you later after school when I pick you up.
I can’t wait to hear about your day!” This way, you
explicitly affirm to your child that you will see him
or her again at the end of the day.
17. 10. Leave a note
You can leave little post-it notes in the lunch box.
It’s fun, surprise and also a token reminder that
the kid would get to see you again soon.
Something as simple as “I hope you’re enjoying
your day. I love you!” is enough to uplift a child’s
spirits.
20. Do’s @ Teachers’ end
1. Relax the rules for the first few months
2. Refresh the concepts learnt in kindergarten
3. Try to teach fundamental concept through
physical activities
4. Encourage opinions and praise them for
sharing opinions
5. Allow for some tears and tantrums
