An introductory video and presentation looking at how different mobile network operators in different parts of the world will approach the switching off 2G/3G services once 5G is here.
We also look at the #GSMAMobileEconomy report 2019 to see how the mobile subscriptions will look in 2025 and what will happen to 2G, 3G, 4G & 5G in different regions of the world.
Finally, we will look at how the new smart feature phones powered by KaiOS has the potential to bridge the digital divide and move the users from 2G to 3G & 4G.
6G Training Course Part 9: Course Summary & Conclusion3G4G
After our successful launch of '5G for Absolute Beginners' course (http://bit.ly/5Gbegins) in 2020, we decided to create an introductory training course on 6G Mobile Wireless Communications technology. The course is ready and the best way to navigate it is via the Free 6G Training page at: https://bit.ly/6Gintro - this will ensure that you have the latest version of each video and also the most recent version of the 6G technologies videos as and they are added.
In this part we are providing a summary of the course and concluding with the next steps. Hopefully you found this course informative and useful. Do let us know what you thought and how do you think the 6G journey will proceed.

In this part we will look at how and why the industry and research community believes that things will be very different in 2030 and to get ready for that era, we need to start looking at and defining 6G today. While some believe that there will be an intermediate 5.5G or Beyond 5G step before jumping directly on to 6G, others believe that 6G will require step change that 5G evolution may not achieve satisfactorily.

The Ericsson Radio Dot System enables mobile operators to deliver consistently high performance voice and data coverage and capacity in the broadest range of enterprise buildings and public venues, including the underserved, high growth, medium-to-large building and venue category.
Shared/unlicensed spectrum is important for 5G and is valuable for wide range of deployments from extreme bandwidth by aggregating spectrum, enhanced local broadband to Internet of Things verticals. 5G New Radio (NR) will natively support all different spectrum types and is designed to take advantage of new sharing paradigms. We are pioneering 5G shared spectrum today by building on LTE-U/LAA, LWA, CBRS/LSA and MulteFire.

This presentation looks at Control and User Plane Separation of EPC nodes (CUPS) which was completed by 3GPP as part of Release 14 specifications and is set to be a key core network feature for many operators.
CUPS provides the architecture enhancements for the separation of functionality in the Evolved Packet Core’s SGW, PGW and TDF. This enables flexible network deployment and operation, by distributed or centralized deployment and the independent scaling between control plane and user plane functions - while not affecting the functionality of the existing nodes subject to this split.

5G payback period MENA -build it and they will come?roberto ercole
presentation of paper at ITS MENA in Aswan Feb.19. Looking at the impact of spectrum fees and infrastructure sharing in the MENA region for 5G deployment.
It questions if the proposed incremental revenue (5% pa) from 5G, makes wide area deployment of 5G commercially attractive for MNOs, even if there are large economic benefits to the wider economy. Spectrum auction/admin fees can further undermine the business case and represent perhaps 25% of deployment costs potentially.
This simple payback analysis is meant to offer a starting point to examine these issues in a transparent way to allow regulators to focus on the key issues that might make the difference between only a few % of cells being 5G, or national coverage (or the time taken to go between these points).
A common shared network or national roaming is likely to be the only way to provide coverage in rural areas, i.e. for the last 5 to 10% of population, and should be considered as competition seems to have reached the limits of what it will provide in terms of national coverage.

One of the common questions that we encounter is why are 5G speeds so low as we were promised 5G downlink speeds of 20 Gbps. Most people do not understand how the 5G speeds are calculated and what do they depend on. In many cases, the network won’t be capable of delivering higher speeds due to some or the other limitation.
In this presentation and video we will look at the real world 5G speeds and try to map it to why these speeds are what they are.

This SON tutorial is part of the 3GPP Self-Organizing Networks series (#3GPPSONSeries). In this part we will look at what features were defined as part of 3GPP Release-9.
At a high level, we can say that the main focus of 3GPP for SON in Release-9 was Self-optimization. There are many different self-optimization use-cases that have been discussed as part of Rel-9. In this video we will look at Self-optimization at a very high level and discuss some of the use cases and features in the following videos.

Beginners: Introduction to 5G Reduced Capability (RedCap) Devices3G4G
A quick introduction to new 3GPP Release-17 feature called RedCap or Reduced Capability New Radio devices. This feature was earlier called NR-Light / NR-Lite and is sometimes referred to as Low Complexity NR devices.
This tutorial looks at why this is needed, how is it different from the existing 5G requirements for eMBB, URLLC & mMTC, and why can't 4G be used instead of 5G for this feature.
We will also look at some of the proposals for enhancement of RedCap that are being discussed for 5G-Advanced in 3GPP Release-18

Beginners: Different Types of RAN Architectures - Distributed, Centralized & ...3G4G
In this basic tutorial we look at different types of RAN architectures that are always being discussed. We start with the Distributed RAN (D-RAN) and then look at Centralized and Cloud RAN (both referred to as C-RAN) architectures. We also quickly look at RAN functional splits for 5G and then tie this all together.
We also look at how Samsung and Nokia discuss these architectures in the context of 5G.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
