In many countries - particularly those which rely on wireless broadband - the process of introducing new technology in existing frequency bands is delayed or held up because spectrum is not licenced on a technology neutral basis. The article explains the benefits of technology neutral spectrum licences.
Mobile broadband services are undergoing a period of dramatic growth causing a tremendous increase in data traffic. This rising tide of traffic is being driven by the growing number of mobile subscribers, particularly smartphone users, who are connecting to faster networks and consuming bandwidth-hungry video content.
Depending on the market up to 2020 the amount of spectrum assigned to mobile operators will increase by a factor of 1.7 to 2 times and beyond 2020 by a further 8 to 10 times. Current thinking with regards spectrum pricing and assignment needs to be revised to solve the economic equation to allow 5G.

Mobile communication technology has been undergoing an extraordinarily fast evolution in the history. Mobile business is the new business designs that not only connect people, but also connect people and business with Internet and things to drive revenue and create opportunity. In Thailand, mobile networks continue to witness exponential growth in data traffic; thereby fourth generation wireless technology has been anticipated for the consumer demand. To understand the evolutionary changes in mobile technology and services in Thailand, this research aims to describe roadmaps and trends for mobile communication technology.
Over the past 30 years the mobile industry has evolved from a fragmented, vehicle centric, low volume, high priced, business focused service, into a global mobile broadband business that has created new industries, new use-cases, billions of customer and innovative devices. The variety of mobile devices is about to explode as the mobile industry moves into what could be described as the third wave of Internet connectivity - a world where billions of “things” are connected. The next few years therefore promises to be as exciting and potentially as disruptive as the past 30 years.
The most widely used spectrum for LTE network deployments is 1800 MHz (3GPP band 3). 192 LTE1800 networks are commercially launched in 92 countries. 1800 MHz is used in 43.4% of LTE network deployments and also has the largest user devices ecosystem. Over 47% of LTE user terminals can operate in the 1800 MHz band.

Industry support for the APT700 band plan is strong. Whereas APT700 provides both FDD and TDD arrangements, it is the FDD plan that has gained global support from industry and regulators in markets addressing approaching 4 billion people.

More than a quarter of a million files (reports, information
papers, Members’ papers, etc.) were downloaded in 1 year from
the GSA website www.gsacom.com
The most downloaded resources over the past year were GSA’s Evolution to LTE and Status of the LTE Ecosystem reports, which
provide authoritative updates and analysis on network deployments and user devices respectively, and the Mobile Broadband market
update presentations. Technology neutrality including spectrum refarming (e.g. 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands) are key themes for GSA
and are reflected in several deliverables. Information about the spectrum used for LTE deployments, and subscriptions growth were
highly requested. The development of HD voice services on mobile networks, enabled by W-AMR technology, is another popular topic
for which GSA provides regular status reports.
The website also provides a valuable global distribution and promotion channel to key industry audiences for GSA member companies,
who are able to reach existing and potential customers, partners and policy-makers. Materials from GSA member companies currently
represent around 10% of monthly downloads.
