of the stick each have their own special meaning and represent certain events that

whittled down and weakened; those carvings are a testament to the strength and

What surprised me the most about The Monuments Men is how dull it was most of
the time. All the ingredients were present to have a fun and intense movie. There
was a lot of potential that wasn t utilized. It s entertaining in spurts, but went

the time and has things going for it, but it just leaves you wanting more from the

It is amazing how the same piece of literature can offer different insight,
interpretation, and understanding to a person at different stages of their life. I ve
been able to see this throughout my own life as increased knowledge and experience
has led to the evolution of my approach to literature. As of late, I tend to apply the
following personal literary theorywhen presented with a literary work. First, I try to
search for morals and lessons that I can draw from the text. I enjoy doing this
because I can learn new things and gain new insights. Second, I try to make
connections to the text by comparing characters, descriptions, or situations to either
myself, the world around me, or other works of literature that I have encountered.
Third, I pay attention to the literary devices employed by the author, such as similes,
metaphors, repetition, and personification. Lastly, I look for symbols. I will now

counsellors to have as skils.
The first concept i will be discussing is empthy, which is discussed in Chapter six
(Shebib, 2003). Empathy is the ability to correctly interpret another person s feelings
to show them you understand. So, empathy is not something we have, but something

As you can see from this example, the counsellor has summarized expressed feelings
from the client.
The second concept I will be discussing is motivation, which is one of the five
empowering activities discussed in chapter seven (Shebib, 2003). Motivation is an
important concept when it comes to counselling because it can lead into change for
the client. A counsellor is key for inhibiting change in a client, but most importantly
the client has to involve their commitment in the change they would like to see.
According to Shebib (1993) Change is stressful because it requires giving up
established patterns of behaviour or thinking, and clients will differ in the extent to
which they have the skill or energy to take the associated risks (p.196). Also, there
are many problems associated with movitating clients such as: lazy clients, clients in
denial, involuntary, ambivalent, energized, and burnt out clients. Counsellors need
to be aware of those problems because counsellors need to apply a variety of skills
to help the different types of problem clients when the time arises. An example of

issue is because it pushes at the idea of content externalism which is the key concept

Goldman s Response An Externalism Response Similarly to Nozick, the response
that Alvin Goldman offers to skepticism is one that highly relies on his conception
of knowledge and the logical work involved with his conception. Goldman articulates
his conception of knowledge in a piece titled, What is Justified Belief . Goldman
holds that knowledge is justified true belief, but really wants to focus on the meaning
of the word justified and the nature of justification. Goldman s conception of
knowledge and justification make him seemingly an externalist about justification.

One of the downside of externalism is that it seems to force philosophers to admit
that we might not have a complete understanding of knowledge. This does not
necessarily seem problematic though because it strictly implies that the complete
understanding of knowledge cannot be found within philosophy not that it cannot
be found at all. It seems reasonable that the different disciplines of science that go
past the realms of philosophy might very well be able to further our understanding
of knowledge. The other downside of the externalism response the fact that it might
do too much in the way that it opens the possibility that we might know things that
we are unaware that we know does not seem to me be a very daunting one even
though it does seem slightly counterintuitive. Personally, I am more comfortable
with idea of having more knowledge rather less. This seems to be what externalism
does is open the door to us having more knowledge than we actually know that we
have. Whereas some of the downsides of the other responses to skepticism that I
present, namely Nozick s, are ones that further limit the amount of knowledge that we
