British general Patrick Ferguson traveled to North Carolina to recruit loyalist troops to protect Lord Cornwallis' forces, angering local colonists. In response, American rebels advanced on Ferguson's troops at King's Mountain on October 7, 1780. During a 65-minute battle, groups of 100-200 patriots surrounded and attacked loyalist positions. Ferguson was killed after being shot seven times, ending the battle in an American victory where 244 loyalists were killed or captured with only 29 patriot casualties.
