The Battle of Leyte Gulf was the largest naval battle in history that took place throughout the Philippine Islands by air, water, and land in October 1944. US commanders Admiral William Halsey, Admiral Chester Nimitz, and General Douglas MacArthur worked together to defeat the Japanese. MacArthur famously returned to the Philippines and announced to the Filipino people "I have returned." The US launched one of the largest invasions of all time, landing troops on Leyte, with hundreds of ships and thousands of men involved over an area of thousands of square miles. It was the first and last major use of kamikaze attacks by the Japanese planes deliberately crashing into US ships. The battle ultimately ended with a Japanese retreat

During the battle, Kurita's force was damaged by American submarines and later retreated after encountering carriers and destroyers near Samar, marking the effective end of the Japanese navy.

Walls are made of tree bark and have openings at the bottom to allow viewing outside while preventing visibility inside. Roofs extend beyond walls for protection from wind and are accessed by ladders or notched logs.
Tausug Architecture
The Tausug are a native tribe found in the Sulu archipelago of the Philippines. They derive their name from the words "tau" meaning man and "sug" meaning current. Their economy is based on farming, fishing and trading. Politically, they were previously organized into independent communities that were united under the Sultanate of Sulu. The Tausug follow Islamic beliefs and also believe in spirits inhabiting nature. Their culture includes varied musical instruments, dances, artisanal crafts like woodcarving and goldsmithing, and architectural styles featuring central posts corresponding to the human body.

Architectural styles featured open plans, natural ventilation, and decorative elements that reflected local traditions and beliefs.
Region 8: Eastern Visayas
Region 8, also known as Eastern Visayas, is located in the central Philippines and consists of 6 provinces and 7 cities across several islands. It has a population of over 4 million people spread across 4,390 villages. The region has terrain that ranges from flat coastal areas to mountainous interiors. Over half of Eastern Visayas is covered by forest. Some notable foods from the region include binagol, wiri-wiri, chocolate moron and sagmani.

Leyte had the highest number of farms and coconut is the dominant crop. Palay is the major temporary crop and chicken and hog raising are also significant agricultural activities. There was an increase in palay production from 2002-2008 but the value of crop production declined in 2010. Infrastructure like irrigation systems and markets are being developed to support agriculture, livestock, and fisheries. However, the region has fewer non-residential establishments compared to other regions, and agriculture is the least productive industry. Educational indicators are improving but literacy remains the lowest in the Visayas.

Region 7, located in central Visayas, consists of four provinces - Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor. With a total land area of 15,875 sq km and population of over 6.3 million people, it is the 5th most populous region in the Philippines. The dominant language is Cebuano. Notable festivals include religious processions for Santo Niño and the Bugwas Festival in San Juan honoring St. Augustine of Hippo. The region has several prominent universities including University of San Carlos, Cebu Normal College, and University of San Jose-Recoletos.
