Leyte had the highest number of farms and coconut is the dominant crop. Palay is the major temporary crop and chicken and hog raising are also significant agricultural activities. There was an increase in palay production from 2002-2008 but the value of crop production declined in 2010. Infrastructure like irrigation systems and markets are being developed to support agriculture, livestock, and fisheries. However, the region has fewer non-residential establishments compared to other regions, and agriculture is the least productive industry. Educational indicators are improving but literacy remains the lowest in the Visayas.
