Two brothers-in-law, Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins, shared a dream in the 1940s to open innovative ice cream shops that would be family gathering places. They opened separate shops in 1945 and 1946 in California before combining under the name Baskin-Robbins in 1953 on the advice of their advertising agency. By the mid-1960s, Baskin-Robbins had grown to over 400 stores across the U.S. and later expanded internationally in the 1970s.
