Dr. James Naismith created the first basketball in 1891 while working as an instructor at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School. The first basketball hoop was a regular basket that was cut at the bottom. The first official basketball game took place in Springfield, Massachusetts. Basketball quickly became an international sport after Dr. Naismith introduced it to schools near where he worked with the YMCA.
