James Naismith, born in 1861 in Canada, invented the game of basketball in 1891 while working as a physical education instructor at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts (now Springfield College). He came up with basketball to keep his students active in the winter months, using two peach baskets and a soccer ball. The first game was played on December 21, 1891 between two teams of nine players and ended with a 1-0 score. Basketball quickly grew in popularity and has now been played for over 124 years.
