James Naismith is known as the inventor of basketball. As a teacher in 1891, he was tasked with creating a new indoor winter game and invented basketball by using two peach baskets and a soccer ball. He went on to refine the game by introducing the metal rim in 1893 and backboard in 1895. Naismith is honored through the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Naismith Awards given to top college players each year.
