Dr. James Naismith created the game of basketball in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts using a peach basket and soccer ball. The first game was played between Naismith's students and scored 1-0. The new game spread quickly through word of mouth and was introduced to other YMCAs and schools. By 1905, basketball was recognized as a permanent winter sport played in high schools, colleges and introduced internationally in a short time. Basketball was invented as an indoor activity for students to participate in after football season to burn off energy during the winter months using running, dribbling and shooting. The core game has not changed much since Naismith's original 13 rules.
