1) Basketball was created in 1891 by James Naismith in Massachusetts as an indoor winter sport. 2) It is played on a rectangular court by two teams of 5 players who score points by shooting the ball through a hoop mounted above the court. 3) The basic rules are that teams have possession for up to 8 or 24 seconds, players can take up to two steps with the ball before dribbling, and personal fouls that impede other players result in free throw attempts.

2. Who did create this sport?
Basketball was born in Massachusetts, U.S. in 1891 by a Canadian named James
Naismith Priest. He creates this sport because he observed that low
temperatures in Massachusetts didn’t allow outdoor sports, so he did the
basketball as an indoor sport.
THE PLAYING FIELD
Basketball is played on a rectangular field
(28x15), divide in two halves by a centre
line.
Free throw line (5.80m from the basket)
Triple line (6.25 from the basket)
The height of the basket is located 3.05
from the ground
RULES
How can we play basket?
 Duration: 4 times of 10 minutes each one
 Players A basketball team has 12 players max, of these only five can be on
the field (the other 7 will be on the bench)
 Scoring:
-1 point: if the ball goes in the basket from the free throw line.
- 2 points: if the ball goes in the basket from inside line 6.75.
- 3 points: if the ball goes in the basket from outside the 6.75 line
(if you step on the line is invalid)
 Starting the game: Two players (one from its team) must be placed within
the centre circle of the pitch (each within its field), other players must be
outside the circle. The referee throws the ball up and the two players jump
to try to pass it to a team-mate.

3. Which are the basic rules?
Steps/travelling:
You can only give two steps with the ball in your hands, if you do more is travelling.
Doubles
 We can’t throw/ bounce the ball with two hands at
once
 If a player catches the ball after bouncing, he can’t
bounce again.
 A player can’t jump and fall back with the ball in
possession, must pass or shot before
5 seconds
The player who has the ball can’t be more than 5 seconds in shoot, pass or dribble
8 seconds
The ball has 8 seconds to exit their field and move to opposite field.
24 seconds
The time that a team has the ball in possession to shoot baskets
Field back
Once the player with the ball is in the opponent can’t:
 Passing the ball to a teammate who is in his own field
 Back dribbling to his own field
 Step the centre line of the court
3 seconds in zone
No offensive player can’t be more than 3 seconds on the opposite team zone
(except when dribbling (regatear), shooting or fighting to catch a rebound).

4. Personal faults
Push or hit another player
Prevent movement of his opponent in the court
Touch the arm or hand at the time of shooting
Free throws:
 For every foul one free throw
 If a team commits six personal fouls in each half/ 2 free throws
 When a player is touch at the time of shoot/ 2 free throws
 If the foul is committed beyond the 3-point line free / 3 throws
TECHNIQUE
Bounce
 The hand should be open, fingers spread, so that
the surface of contact with the ball is as large as
possible.
 Wrist should not be rigid when throws the ball (you
don’t have to hit the ball you have to accompany it)
 Contact with the ball: fingers and first part of the palm (not the entire
palm)
 When we launched, we must peer (mirar detenidamente) to see the game
situation, with this we avoid an opponent remove us the ball.
Types of bounce
Speed bounce
 Called high bounce
 Defenders are far from us
 Conducted in sprinting
 The bounce comes past us at a great distance
Protection bounce
 Called under bounce
 The defender is closet o us
 It does back or side of the
defender, protecting the ball

 Use your free hand to shield the

If a player makes five personal fouls will be ejected and replaced by another player

5. Pass
Types of pass
 Chest pass: the ball goes driven from the chest, with both hands, towards
the player who will receive it
 Bounce pass: it is as the chest pass, but bouncing in the middle
 Baseball pass: the ball is lifted with both hands above the head and while
you are taking a step forward must launch with both hands
Shooting
 The throwing hand is located under the ball and the support hand stand at
the side of the ball
 Launching arm should form an angle of 90º
 Feet should be shoulder with apart, foot shooting hand should be slightly
ahead. (tiro de pies y manos debe estar ligeramente por delante)
 Legs slightly bent
 When we throw the ball, legs extend while we shoot the ball
Types of shooting
 Free shoot: It’s the shoot that takes place after a personal foul ( is a
static shoot), is from the free throw area, and without opposition. Free
throws are only worth 1 point rather than 2.
 Jump shot: You can take a jump shoot from anywhere on the floor. It
involves jumping off the floor, then shooting the ball. The main advantage
of the jump shot is the ability to elevate over the defense and put up a
shoot that will make it all the way to the hoop.
 Layup: the layup is so-named because you lay
the ball up off the glass and let it fall into the
basket rather than shooting it straight in. You
can perform a layup from either side of the
basket.

6.  Hook (gancho): Your body must stand laterally from the
basket. It takes the ball with the outer hand and throws
it over your head.
 Dunk (mate): It involves jumping and introducing the ball
with one or both hands in the basket. It requires
tremendous leaping activity (actividad de salto) and a
little bit of creativity. Dunking is simply stuffing (meter)
the ball straight into the basket.
FEINTS/ FAKES
They are actions to make believe that you are going to do something but you make
another.
They can be:
 Pass feint
 Movement feint
 Shot feint field goal

7. Who is who in the team?
1. Base: He is the player who organizes the team and who carries the ball from
our team to the adverse basket.
2. Guard (escolta): He is a player who helps the base and shoots well to basket.
3. Power forward (ala-pívot): He is a tall player to capture rebounds but also
collaborates with the eave (alero) on counterattacks and the shooting hoops.
4. Pivot: He is the tallest player specialist in capture rebounds and makes plays
near the basket in spite of having very close the defending players.
5. Eave: He is a quick player that participates in the counterattacks, but also he is
a good shooter and taller than the guard so he can capture rebounds.
