Two main factors to consider when choosing a journal:
paper fits within the journal’s scope, and
the reputation of the journal itself.
 The reputation is not necessarily based on metrics such as the impact
factor, but on aspects such as the professionalism of the editorial
team, the journal’s audience and reach, or turnaround times, to name
a few.

• someone holding the door while the patient is brought in
• the nurse who takes the blood samples during the night
• the laboratory technician who analyses the samples
• the chairman who requests his registrar to write the paper
• the colleague who helps in the lay out and assembly of a poster
• the statistician who only analyzes the data
• the chairman who signs the research project or looks for funding
• the colleague who edits the manuscript or provides advise

6. The methods used are applied rigorously and explain why and how the data support the
conclusions.
7. Connections to prior work in the field or from other fields are made and serve to make the
article's arguments clear
8. The article tells a good story, meaning it is well written and easy to understand, the
arguments are logical and not internally contradictory.

• It is key for the editor. Based on the abstract, he/she
may decide to continue reading, or not. Therefore, write
it carefully.
• Double-check that numbers in the abstract match those
in the text, tables, results, and legends.
• Conform strictly to the style indicated in the Guide for

Time to submit your article with your covering letter
Together with the abstract of your paper, the cover letter is one of the
first things the editor will see, so make it count!
Keep the letter as direct and short as possible
The longer it is, the easier it is to overlook something important

Editors and reviewers are looking for original and
innovative research that will add to the field of study;
Keys are:
• For research-based papers, ensure that you have enough
numbers to justify sound statistical conclusions
• For a larger study, it may be better to produce one important
research paper, rather than a number of average incremental
papers
