The results showed a significant increase in farmers using the question and answer service compared to other user categories. It is recommended that specialized information services leverage existing extension structures to effectively reach farmers.

Through this public-private partnership, calls to the hotline were subsidized and hosted at Safaricom's call center, allowing LVCT Health to reach more rural youth with HIV and SRH information. The number of calls increased dramatically from 150,000 in 2011 to over 1 million in 2013. The partnership demonstrated how collaborating with private companies can help scale up HIV prevention efforts among youth through improved infrastructure, data collection, and reduced costs. This presentation focuses on learning acquired from the last 2-3 year effort in 8 districts across both Uganda and Ethiopia and REC-QI potential to add to the arsenal of RI strengthening tools. REC is now the number one approach to reaching hard-to-reach health facilities. Adding Quality improvement to RED/REC will combine the “what” (RED/REC) and “how” (QI) factors to strengthening for sustainable improvement in coverage and brings together all EPI stakeholders. In addition, by working at both national and lower level, REC-QI encourages peer learning and incorporation of innovations into national policies, guidelines, and protocols.

Failure of agricultural technology adoption is most often premised on lapses in the farmers’ socio-economic variables and governments’ failure to provide certain institutional resources. More so, when extension programme objectives fail, blames for this failure are often shifted on the farmers without looking at whether extension service delivery methods/tools meet the demands of farmers. This study assessed perception of maize farmers on effectiveness of extension delivery tools in Zabzugu Tatale in the Northern Region of Ghana. The study involved a cross-sectional survey with 240 randomly sampled household heads growing maize. Primary data was collected using structured questionnaire and analysed in means at three-points Likert scale using descriptive statistics with the help of Stata 14.0. Results showed that creation of awareness of agriculture extension agents was perceived very effective (M=2.71); visiting farmers and organizing field meetings with farmers were found to be effective with means (M=1.77) and (M=1.88) respectively. However, extension delivery was poor in the following areas: Field Days (M=1.35), Organization of Demonstrations (M=1.40), Research-Extension-Farmer linkage (M=1.26) and Farmer Training Programme (M=1.36). It was, therefore, recommended that government and development partners should provide funds and logistical support to agricultural extension agents to deliver extension services using the methods the farmers in Zabzugu Tatale considered effective. The government also needs to supervise and equip Research-Extension-Farmer Linkage Committee (REFLC) in the study area. Extension officers should also facilitate the formation and sustenance of farmer groups in their respective zones since agricultural technologies are diffused easier among farmer groups than among individually scattered farmers.

Agricultural extension programs are key means for assisting farmers with information and technology to expand their abilities and improve production. Of late, Zimbabwe has witnessed increased investments by both the government and the development community in the Farmer to Farmer (F2F) extension approach as a key strategy of complementing the overburdened and severely underfunded public extension and advisory services in increasing extension coverage. This study sought to assess the extent of adoption of the F2F extension approach as a major source of extension and advisory services. The study used a sample of 479 smallholder farmers that was drawn using a multi-stage random sampling approach from 6 districts in Manicaland and Masvingo provinces of Zimbabwe. The study found that adoption of the F2F extension approach was low with only 43% of the sampled farmers using the approach. Theadoption of the approach was also found to be similar across gender, districts and agro-ecological zones. Results of the binary logistic regression revealed that access to public extension services, training of farmers using the non-block training approach, number of extension visits received by a farmer per year, total area cropped, agro-ecological zone V, and adoption of improved farming practices were significant factors that encouraged the adoption of the farmer to farmer extension approach by smallholder farmers. The study suggests that two things, above all,are important in promoting the adoption of the F2F extension approach by smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe. These are:first, improving access to public extension services to backstop lead farmers andsecond, training farmers using the non-block training approach as it encourages more interaction amongst farmers as they validate each other in the application of new technologies.

IFPRI organized a two day workshop on “Agricultural Extension Reforms in South Asia – Status, Challenges, and Policy Options” to be organized at Committee Room 3, NASC, Pusa, New Delhi on February 17-18, 2015. IFPRI has been conducting research related to agricultural extension reforms in India and collaborating with researchers in other south Asian countries for the past five years through various projects. For understanding extension reforms in India, a major consultation was held in NAARM in 2009 during which policy makers called for development of evidence for spreading extension reform process in India. Since then several research papers have been produced on various aspects of Indian extension system. While they are presented in various forms including several discussion papers, there is a need to pull all the research result together to present it in form that could be used by the policy makers to further guide them in the reform process. South Asian countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka are going through similar challenges in getting knowledge to farmers. Several experiment shave been conducted to test new approaches to extension by the public, private and NGO sectors. Learning from each country experiences will bring collective understanding and knowledge for the policy makers who are attempting to bring changes in the reform process. This document summarizes findings from case studies of agricultural innovation support services in Cameroon and Madagascar. 173 service situations across 8 innovations were identified and characterized. The innovations included socio-technical innovations like chicken vaccination and 24-hour cassava retting, as well as socio-organizational innovations like organic pineapple production and multi-stakeholder platforms. A diversity of service providers was found to be involved, with different providers specializing in certain services. Support was concentrated in the development phases of innovations and less common in dissemination. Socio-organizational innovations attracted more support services overall. Recommendations include boosting support for dissemination and soft skill services, as well as encouraging service diversification.

The role of ICT- enabled extension services delivery for enhanced agricultural productivity cannot be overemphasized. In this article the effectiveness of AgroTech Model piloted by Grameen Foundation in Ghana is assessed. The AgroTech Model is a private led ICT- enabled extension and support services. The study methodology involved two pronged approaches including a desk review of existing literature and a primary survey of 402 agricultural value chain actors. Data collected was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Study findings showed that the Agro-Tech Model has high performance rating among farmers interviewed. More than one third of the farmers rated the performance of the AgroTech Model as Excellent (above 70%) while 27% rated the performance as Good (70 - 50%). Factors such as timely supply of inputs, cost implications and improvement in crop yields that translate into additional income influenced farmers’ decisions on the performance rating of the AgroTech Model. Awareness of the AgroTech model among males in the communities surveyed was higher than females. Overall, willingness to pay for extension and support services was estimated at 58%. However, willingness to pay for extension and support services was slightly higher among male farmers (59.1%) than female farmers (55.3%).

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
