Editor's Notes

  1. What I would like to accomplish here today is, first, to show how social media has evolved. Then give you some insight on how it is now impacting business. And finally, to explain the benefits of using social media. It is the new media and it is here to stay. Just like TV, it plays an important role in advertising, news, and information. Social media is very involved in the business world and you need to use social media to be successful today.
  2. This is a timeline provided by the text book Social Media Marketing; A Strategic Approach. (Barker & Barker & Borman & Neher, p. 14) Long before digital, social media was the postal service, telegraph, and then telephone. Then in the 1960’s ARPANET and email developed. From there it has bosomed into a world wide network of sites, blogs, and social media like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
  3. The new social media has opened a way for better communication. Forumsallow both real and potential customers to interact with you and with each other to discuss your products or services. Newsgroups can be very powerful tools in promoting your own web site. There can be several topics within a newsgroup. Each topic is called a thread. You can start a thread, or post to a thread or respond to a post, placing your opinion out there and making yourself known. There are discussion boards on every subject from baby care to cancer survival where you can find or ask questions on the subject.. These are also very important in academics allowing both the students and instructors to communicate and share information. “Job postings are an important part of any information technology social network. Information technology is one of the fastest-growing job sectors in the US economy Employers looking for top talent will not only post jobs on information technology social networks, but browse for qualified members to poach from other companies” (Roos, 2014)
  4. Facebook is ranked first with an estimated 900,000,000 visits per month.Second is Twitter with 290,000,000 visits per month.Next, surprisingly, is LinkedIn with 250,000,000 visits per month.Followed by Pinterest, one becoming popular rapidly, with 150,000,000 visits per month.Then Google with 126,000,000 visits per month.This survey was done by eBizMBA Rank with  Alexa Global Traffic Rank.
  5. Here are four of the many social media, but these are of particular interest to IT service companies.Slashdot has over 3.7 million visitors per MONTH and over 5300 comments per day and has won over 20 awards. It is a technology based news website. Reddit is the creation of a copycat of social networking site with story submission and voting systems like DIGG has but in just four short years became ranked 64 places higher than DIGG.The IT Toolbox is a great social networking site offering everything mentioned previously; forums, newsgroups, discussion boards and job postings.LinkedIn is truly the world’s largest professional network and it is growing rapidly. LinkedIn’s focus is on work not play.With these types of sites and with the number of visits, as just shown, there is an endless resource for any IT service company.
  6. The social media marketing planning cycle has all the necessary components for a success. It is an ongoing process, first with strategies through to fine tuning and listening. And I believe listening is the most important part. Listen to what people are saying, to see where you are standing and to see what the competition is doing. By listening you can set your goals and plan your strategies.
  7. Links in social media are made where the consumer can not only ask questions and get answers directly from you but also read and communicate with the average John Doe who has actually used the services. At very little cost, social media can sway customers from their present service to yours and since customer loyalty appears to be prominent, this is an area to focus on.Here I have listed the age demographics of several social media. See where your target market falls.
  8. The more media you incorporate the greater your results. It is the least expensive, most extensive, and has the fastest results.
