• The environment is something you are very familiar with. It's everything that
makes up our surroundings and affects our ability to live on the earth—the air
we breathe, the water that covers most of the earth's surface, the plants and
animals around us, and much more.
• In recent years, scientists have been carefully examining the ways that people
affect the environment. They have found that we are causing air pollution,
deforestation, acid rain, and other problems that are dangerous both to the
earth and to ourselves. These days, when you hear people talk about “the
environment”, they are often referring to the overall condition of our planet, or
how healthy it is.

- We need to look at the CO2 balance required in the earth atmosphere
to support life
Overpopulation - We need to look at ways for poor countries to curb their population
growth
Natural Resource depletion - Better management of natural resources
Waste Disposal - More recycling and/or other programs to reduce both household and
industrial waste
Loss of biodiversity - More nature preserves and/or protection of key areas like wetlands or
coral reefs
De-forestration - Better forest practices including re-planting
Acidic Oceans - There is no proof oceans are becoming more acidic. However, many
countries are dumping waste into the oceans which needs to stop
Acidic Rain - Tighter regulations on coal-fired plants including scrubbing and the
use of clean coal
Urban Sprawl - Encourage more economic opportunity in rural areas and/or look at
transit systems as part of moving people around the various cities

10. WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE
• GDP drives government revenue via consumer/business consumption and exports
• Environmental rules need to ensure land, air and water are protected
• Carbon Taxation is not required for emissions. Countries like China, USA, Russia and India need
to re-look at their scrubbing practices as well as looking alternatives like hydro or nuclear power
• CO2 GHG needs to be evaluate as part of the requirement to support life on this plant.
• Emerging countries need to bring in reforms as part of improving land and water management
along with air quality
• Environment should not be second fiddle when it comes to economy
• UN needs to clean up bad government around the world. Many of the poor environmental
countries are run by either military governments or dictators.
