Blog – Manufacturing Shipments and Orders – The United States – August 2023
Summary:
New orders for manufacturing technology in the United States totaled $353.9 million in July 2023, as per the latest report by AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This figure marked a 12.4% decline from June 2023 but remained only 10.5% lower than July 2022. Year-to-date orders amounted to $2.83 billion, reflecting a 12.7% decrease compared to the same period the previous year.
Douglas K. Woods, President of AMT, noted that July is typically a slower month for manufacturing technology orders, so a slight drop was expected. However, he pointed out a notable trend: over the last two months, the year-to-date order gap has narrowed during historically slow periods. While job shops have seen decreased orders, other industries that benefited from reshoring or government investments have helped fill the gap.
Among specific sectors, job shops, the largest customer segment, placed their lowest total monthly orders since August 2020. In contrast, metal valve manufacturers recorded their third-highest monthly order value on record, last seen in September 2018, making up nearly 5% of the total manufacturing technology order value for July 2023. Manufacturers of motor vehicle transmissions continued to order machinery at an elevated pace. However, the aerospace industry continued to order below its early 2022 peaks, with hopes that recent projects like the federal government's $1.5 billion investment in communications satellites might reverse this trend.

This is a great opportunity for the utility sector to re-look at their asset management through using vegetation and
weather management solutions. Mitigation of risk from climate is becoming a key focus area for the utility sector.

1. Defining Terms - The issue of non-GAAP disclosures doesn’t appear in the business news cycle much
anymore. That doesn’t mean accountants, auditors, and CFOs feel the matter is settled.
2. Accounting Lifeline -Do you or your accounting head need reliable help with an accounting or auditing
compliance matter? The SEC’s office of the chief accountant (OCA) is available. Lindsay McCord said
consulting the OCA is a resource underutilized by many companies, despite a whole web page devoted
to where to get questions answered. There’s even a list of information the OCA needs to sort out your
sticking poin
3. Is an Environmental Credit a Credit? Almost a year ago, FASB added a project to its technical agenda on
accounting for environmental credit programs — e.g., carbon offsets, an area for which it has no
specific rules.
4. ESG Is About Data - What’s a financial reporting conference without a panel on the SEC’s forthcoming
ESG reporting standards? With a lot still up in the air, the panel was mostly a “how will we do this, how
will we do that” discussion.

The key sectors mention in this article are food manufacturing/processing, healthcare, and agriculture. Let me first focus
on healthcare as healthcare is facing many issues including the need for more performance and value for money audits.
I can group both agriculture and food manufacturing/processing together as they are areas that can adopt more
technology. Key with both of these sectors is their ability to manage their input costs as part of producing their various
products. Agriculture sector can also benefit from technology like geospatial as a part managing crop yields. Technology
companies need to look at the most cost efficient to provide geospatial as a service for small to mid size enterprises.
