The used currency is lei (singular leu), while the coins are bani (singular
ban).
There are many places across the city where you can exchange your
money; Euro, US Dollars or British Pounds can be found everywhere; yet
other currencies can be also found at exchange offices or banks.
Most of the exchange office do not have commission and have a better
rate then the banks.
Banks and ATMs are available in all places of the city and allow
withdrawing lei at a rate given by your bank; there is the chance of having
a commission imposed by your bank; only few have the possibility to issue
euro (check specifically the ATMs).
You can pay directly by card in almost every shop or restaurant,
regardless the currency you have your card in.
The phone lines are connected to your operator in your country; it will
only work on your SIM if you have the roaming activated and various
options that go with it for working in roaming.
Alcohol prices are almost the same everywhere, but cheaper than a lot of
EU countries.
You can find free WI-Fi at every café in the Old Centre, and pretty frequent
around the entire city.
There is quite common the young people to speak English and even find
menus in restaurants in English.

A traveller when passing through the area, notices the women that are
working in the crystal clear water of the river. Following them closely, he
sees that in fact they are gathering the sand from the river’s runway with
a strain and bring to surface small stones that were shining in the sun
beams. He was later to understand that these in fact were separating
pieces of gold from the river’s sand. Being impressed by the ardour the
ladies were working with, but mostly by the activity done by them, at his
return home he starts telling to anyone who would like to listen about
this story, taking further and further the fame of the city of Rivulus
Dominarum, which is translated as the River of the Ladies.
The first documentary mentioning of Baia Mare city dates back to 1329.
Centuries have passed since then and along with there have been
written numerous history pages that stay today as a proof of the rich
past of our city.
Under the city's motto, Baia Mare continues its trip along the centuries.
Situated on the middle course of the Săsar River, at an average altitude of
228 m, the city known in the past under the name of Rivulus Dominarum
makes its way today as well through the history.
Three legends mention the origin of the Latin name of the city, Rivulus
Dominarum:

Another legend mentions that meanwhile the men were gone in the mines, the
city was led by the women. As in the 13th Century the Tatars started the
invasions in this area from the will to steal the gold and silver wealth from the
city, the women set free the dammed waters of the rivers drowning thus the
attackers and saving the city.
A last legend presents a totally different approach. In the medieval time, the
queens would often receive from their spouses as presents vast territories that
were including as well cities. It may be said this was the case as well of Rivulus
Dominarum fortress, the first ladies being offered as a gift the gold and silver
mines of the medieval town.
At the end of the 16th Century the town receives the name of Nagybánya. Taking into
consideration the Hungarian domination here ever since the beginning of the first
millennium and the intensively developed industry around mining, it is easy to
understand the association of the two words forming the city’s name: nagy – big and
bánya – mine.
The term of “bánya” adapted to the Romanian language becomes baie, with the
meaning of a mine. Being an important mining centre, it was imposed the awarding
of the title of “big”. Thus, the nowadays name of the city defines the big mine, as in
the main mine of the area.
the geographical structure of the area includes portions of plains, valleys,
hills and mountains, as well as the richness of the soil and the subsoil
provide favorable conditions for the development of human settlements
since ancient times; the first traces that prove the existence of human
activity on this territory date back to the Paleolithic or the Stone Age
(circa 600,000-10,000 BC);
the Bronze Age (1,700-700 BC) preserves evidence especially related to
domestic and defense activities; due to having in the area rich resources
of copper ores, but also significant amounts of gold and silver deposits,
their intensive exploitation began already in this period;
from the Iron Age (700 BC-106 AD), numerous deposits of gold
ornaments are discovered throughout the Maramureș county, which
reinforce the statement that the gold and silver mines in this area were
intensively exploited even before the Roman conquest of Dacia;
Let’s see now shortly the local history:

due to the wealth of the underground in the area, different peoples are eager to
conquer and rule the city, so the campaigns of conquest led by various foreign
peoples begin; with the penetration of the Hungarians into the region and the
conquest of the city (probably at the beginning of the 1st Millennium), the city
began to develop more and more, especially by bringing "guests" (German
settlers), craftsmen skilled in the art of mining;
in addition to crafts, mining and agricultural activities, the city benefits from
numerous exchanges due to its geographical position on a commercial road that
led to Poland through Sighetu Marmației, a road also travelled by Greek and
Armenian merchants or those coming from other parts;
the first documentary mentioning of the city dates from May 29, 1329; it is issued
by the chancellery of King Charles Robert and mentions the city for the first time
under the name of Rivulus Dominarum;
crafts develop step by step according to other activities of the city and with the
technological evolution; craftsmen are organized in guilds and have privileges;
although it is under the leadership of the various powers of the time throughout
history (Hungarians, Hapsburg, the Principality of Transylvania, etc.), the city
receives and preserves various privileges and freedoms given the fact that it is a
true source for the treasury of its rulers; among them are listed the freedom to
choose its mayor, jurors and parish priests, to judge within the city, the assurance
of individual liberties, the freedom of customs, the right to have a fair per year for
15 continuous days, of the free sale of wine or to fortify itself with walls against
the onslaught of enemies;
from all the privileges granted to the city, it appears that from the middle of the
14th Century until the end of the 19th, the city is structured and well organized,
with freedoms specific to a free royal city, which also benefits from a high level of
autonomy; the city receives in 1484 the right to judge on its own, including the
right to give the death punishment, a right otherwise rarely seen in this period;
proof of the importance of the city and its economic power is also recognized by
the existence of a mint from the first half of the 14th century; the mint has a net
income in 1463 of 20,000 florins annually, compared to those of Buda (8,000) or
Sibiu (6,000); another important privilege offered by its existence is the right of
the city to mint its own currency;
in the middle of the 15th Century, the city experienced an economic, social and
cultural flourishing due to its entry under the influence of Iancu de Hunedoara;
he orders the construction of an edifice for his wife, Elisabeta, as well as the bell
tower (today known as the Stephan Tower) finalised by his son, King Matthias
Corvinus; he allows the city to levy customs on carts entering the city's weekly
fair, with the right to use this revenue for paving and cleaning the streets;
in 1469 the city receives the right to surround itself with a wall; thus the old
defense system, consisting of earthen waves and palanquins (reinforcements
made of horizontally placed tree trunks) is replaced by a wall belt built by the
locals, of stone and brick, interrupted in places by strong towers (bastions); the
Butchers’ Bastion, the only tower in this system that still exists today, was built
around the 1500s;
access to the city is achieved through several entrance gates, the most important
being the southern one, The Hungarian Gate, located near the Butchers’ Bastion,
respectively the northern one, The Bridge Gate, located at the end of today's
Podul Viilor street;
the period of the 15th-16th Centuries is a turbulent one for the city, when it often
passes from one leadership to another or is attacked by various peoples such as
Hungarians, Poles, Ottomans, Tatars or Hapsburgs; at the end of the 16th
Century, the city finally becomes the property of the Transylvanian princes, a
period in which it found more peace and peaceful development;
although the city is often annexed and divided between the great powers, all
rulers respect the rights of the city throughout its existence, even granting them
new ones or renewing the existing ones;
the establishment of the first school, Schola Rivulina, takes place in 1547 against
the background of the outbreak of the Reformation, and it has been operating for
more than two centuries;
in 1635, merchants from Vienna, Tarnovo, Sofia, Brussa, Chernivtsi, etc. come to
the famous town fair;
in 1641, a pipe for drinking water was built in the city, made of hornbeam wood,
which in some places was connected with other pipes made of iron, copper,
ceramics and even glass;
in the 17th century it seems the city no longer fits within its 15th-Century walls,
extending beyond them over the 5 km that represented the city boundary;
in 1660, the city pays the Ottoman army the sum of 10,000 thalers in order not to
be devastated; the amount is collected through taxes from the inhabitants, but
also through loans that drowns the city's income for several decades;
repayments from the loans taken are also made in 1737;
during the religious Reform fights between the Catholics (represented by the
Jesuit order) and the Reformed, the city walls are torn down in 1673;
at the end of the 17th Century, due to the re-establishment of Hapsburg power
and living conditions much worse than before, the rebellion of the masses is
imminent and grows daily; the presence of the outlaws thus begins to be
signalled; the actions led by Grigore Pintea, known as Pintea the Brave, take a
large scale at the end of the 17th Century due to the exploitation, injustices and
iniquities committed on the population by the Austrians and the feudal lords;
in the middle of a stormy attack executed by Pintea and his gang on the city, he is
fatally shot, falling in front of the South Gate, at the entrance to the city; the
attack was meant to liberate the people from the current rule and mainly from
the big exploitative feudal lords;
a census of taxation from the end of the 18th Century gives us an overview of the
city, recording the existence of 3,580 inhabitants and 705 houses reaching 9,089
inhabitants at the end of the 19th Century; under the communist administration
regime with an economic policy based on industrialization, in which mining and
metallurgy are predominant, the number of inhabitants of the city increases
exponentially from almost 14,000 in the 1930s to almost 90,000 in 1974;
the end of the 19th Century brings with it new elements of identity for the city,
which begins to assert itself as a European artistic center, developed on the
foundations of an institutionalized educational structure, namely the Simon
Hollósy Private School of Painting (1896-1901), functional still today;
the city's first museum opens its doors on June 19, 1904, its collections mainly
consisting of donations from doctors, bankers, merchants or other wealthier
people of the time.
PLACES TO SEE
We will start with a tour through the main places which can be visited
at a quick glance, from the outside. We invite you however to check
after the Museums sections for the visiting schedule of some of them.
Centrul Vechi – Piața Libertății / The Old Centre – Freedom Square
The buildings of this square are from the 15th to 19th Century, getting
shaped in the late Gothic period. The edifices nowadays are the proof of
architectural styles such as Gothic, Baroque or Neo-Classic, and despite their
era and style difference they blend smoothly in the viewpoint.

The 18th Century's Black Eagle Inn (Vasile Lucaciu with 1 Mai streets);
the house from 2 Piața Libertății as one of the few that keeps at its best the
German architectural characteristics of the old town;
The Cloister of the Minorite Monastery from 6 Piața Libertății dating from
1734, used to house in the beginning of the 20th Century the Baia Mare Town
Museum in one of its wings;
Minerul Complex from 7 Piața Libertății, with its latest shape dating from 1905
(the previous building of 1874 burnt to the ground);
The Lendvay House from 15 Piața Libertății (having been the house where the
great actor Lendvay Márton was born) initially from the 16th Century and with
further additions until the 18th Century;
The Iancu de Hunedoara / Elisabeth House from 18 Piața Libertății, from the
15th Century, built at the order of Iancu de Hunedoara for his wife Elisabeth on
the foundations of previous buildings; it is easily recognise by the arches
suspended over the old street that once connected with the state mint.
Important buildings are:
Of course others are worth looking at as each has particular elements that tell their
stories centuries after being built.
Turnul Sfântul Ștefan – Piața Cetății / Saint Stephen Tower – the Citadel Square
The tower was once attached to the huge Saint Stephen Church, a church with two
equal naves, with a row of pillars arranged along the longitudinal axis. After the third
big fire that hit Saint Stephen complex, the church is being abandoned and later
completely destroyed.
The 14th-Century tower however now stands alone guarding over from the Citadel
Square, being the symbol of the city for centuries. If you get here during the working
hours, you can be a lucky viewer over the city splendid panorama offered by the
tower.
In the same square, there used to be 2 more churches – Saint Catherine and Saint
Martin – which were destroyed in the 18th Century. However, the plaza offers a view
over their ruins and, in exchange, you can visit the Saint Trinity Church that was
built here in 1718. It kept lots of it initial decorations inside and is a perfect example
of the Hungarian Catholic practices in town. Its 2 towers that guard the entrance host
sculptures in a natural size. The church also is the house of an amazing organ with 3
keyboards, 40 registers and 2,470 tubes, built in 1939, being one of the biggest in the
country.
In the same plaza, there is also the Saint Nicholas Church, built in 1926. It is the first
Orthodox church of Baia Mare resulted by transforming the sports hall of the former
Roman Catholic Gymnasium through building a bell tower to it.
Nature at its finest in Baia Mare
Bastionul Măcelarilor / The Butchers’ Bastion
The only remaining tower from 15th Century defence system, The Butchers’ Bastion
was built in a circular shape from a mixture of volcanic rocks, of a rather modest
height. It was used also for storing the ammunition used to defend the city and so, it
got its nickname as the Ammunition Bastion. The tower and its beautiful garden are
open for visit so check the Museums section for its details.
Sinagoga / The Synagogue
The Jewish community was once quite numerous inside the city and had various
buildings around. Today we have standing only the synagogue built in 1885 in a
Transylvanian Neo-Baroque style. It can be found on 3 Someșului Street, yet it is
closed due to the very small number of practitioner.
Biserica Sfântul Anton / Saint Anton Church
The oldest church of Baia Mare dates from 1402 and can be found in 8 Piața Păcii. It
functioned under the name of Saint Nicholas in the beginning, among the hospital
with the same name that was rather a charity institution, more than a health one.
Once taken by the Jesuit Order, it is renamed as Saint Anton.
Oficiul Salinar / The Saline Office
Its building started in 1748 with the basement and the ground floor. It was used for
the offices of the Saline Direction as well as for storing salt, yet it also got to be used
as a bank and even as living spaces. It used to be known as well under the name of
Casa Dragoș (Dragoș House) due to its owner, named Teofil Dragoș. In the 19th
Century it gets its superior floor and amazing ornamented terracotta fireplaces.
The building hosts nowadays the Art Museum so check the specific section for its
schedule.
Biserica Reformată / The Reformed Church
Situated on 10 Podul Viilor Street, the church is quite a symbol of Baia Mare through
its red roofed tower. Built in 1792, it is a massive stone church and the most valuable
Neo-Classic monument of the city. The Reformed population was the one who mainly
contributed financially to erecting the building while some donations were received
also from around the country. It has as well an organ, a very high valuable
instrument from 1828.
Monetăria / The Mint
The building of the city mint started in 1734, on the left bank of the Săsar River. Built
in a Baroque style, it hosted the place where the gold and silver were transformed
through various processes into coins for its rulers.
The complex building can be visited today as it hosts the Maramureș County
Museum of History and Archaeology.
Monumentul Ostașului Român / the Monument of the Romanian Soldier
The monument has a deep commemorative character and has been erected in the
memory of the Romanian heroes who fell in the field of battle in the WWII. It was
assembled in 1959 and besides its important role in the history of the city, it is as well
a very common meeting place for the locals.
The statue can be found in the Park of Câmpul Tineretului (Youth Park) and is an
open air, with no entrance fee monument.

ROX Specialty Coffee – breakfast, lunch, drinks: a great place to grab a
drink. They have an amazing selection of specialty coffees and even if you
are not sure what you want to get, the baristas are super friendly and
helpful and will make sure that you choose a coffee type that you like.
And if you don’t enjoy coffee that much, ROX has an amazing selection of
non-coffee drinks, such as Matcha Latte, Matcha Tonic, Rooibos Latte,
tea, hot chocolate, energy shots and fresh juices. They also have a small
selection of pastries and baked goods.
Supreme Burger – lunch, dinner: a small burger joint. They have a wide
selection of burgers, including vegan and vegetarian options. They also
have combo-menus which include burger, drink of choice and French
fries. By the way, their French fries are very, very good, crispy on the
outside and somewhat fluffy on the inside. Except for burgers they also
serve hot wings, crispy strips, loaded French fries and onion rings.

Glory Days – breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks: another very famous and loved
place near Mara Park. During any time of the day, you will be able to find
something here, whether it’s something small for breakfast, pizza, pasta or
burger for lunch and dinner, or some drinks (both alcoholic and alcohol free)
during the evening.
Karaffe – breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks: a great place for breakfast, brunch,
small lunch or dinner. They also have an amazing selection of drinks, such as
Vegan Matcha Lattes, Butterfly Pea Latte, Beetroot Cacao Latte or Turmeric Latte.
They also serve great deserts and have great tea selection. However, in case you
would prefer to grab a meal here, they have a very good selection of different
pastas, risotto, sandwiches and burgers.
Prăjituri Fredy – cakes: a very beloved place where you can find a variety of
cakes and desserts. They have both traditional and some modern baked goods as
well. The inside area is very small, so it’s better to take the cakes to go.
Han Bastion – lunch, dinner: a very famous local spot, which is why it’s always
better to reserve it in advance, as it’s usually quite packed, especially during the
dinner time or during the weekends. One of the dishes they are famous for is
plăcintă and they serve both savory and sweet options, as well as a vegetarian
version. They also have amazing home-made lemonades.

Bolt and Uber) and it barely happens to be tricked into a higher price, so it is

visible their price (same for all the companies). It is not common to pay by
card, yet only cash.

  • 5. Mutuus amor civium optimum est civitatis firmamentum. The love between the citizens is the greatest (supreme) strength of the city.
  • 6. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS The used currency is lei (singular leu), while the coins are bani (singular ban). There are many places across the city where you can exchange your money; Euro, US Dollars or British Pounds can be found everywhere; yet other currencies can be also found at exchange offices or banks. Most of the exchange office do not have commission and have a better rate then the banks. Banks and ATMs are available in all places of the city and allow withdrawing lei at a rate given by your bank; there is the chance of having a commission imposed by your bank; only few have the possibility to issue euro (check specifically the ATMs). You can pay directly by card in almost every shop or restaurant, regardless the currency you have your card in. The phone lines are connected to your operator in your country; it will only work on your SIM if you have the roaming activated and various options that go with it for working in roaming. Alcohol prices are almost the same everywhere, but cheaper than a lot of EU countries. You can find free WI-Fi at every café in the Old Centre, and pretty frequent around the entire city. There is quite common the young people to speak English and even find menus in restaurants in English. F A Q

BAIA MARE 63 km to Satu Mare (border with Hungary); 65 km to Sighetu Marmației (border with Ukraine); 150 km to Cluj Napoca; 200 km to Oradea; 390 km to Budapest (Hungary); 600 km to Bucharest. Baia Mare is located in the county of Maramureș, in the northern part of Romania, and has an average population of about 135.000 inhabitants. The distances to the main cities in the areas are: L O C A T I O N Baia Mare Cluj-Napoca Oradea Satu Mare București Sighetu Marmației Timișoara Craiova Brașov Constanța Iași Sibiu Alba Iulia
  • 8. A traveller when passing through the area, notices the women that are working in the crystal clear water of the river. Following them closely, he sees that in fact they are gathering the sand from the river’s runway with a strain and bring to surface small stones that were shining in the sun beams. He was later to understand that these in fact were separating pieces of gold from the river’s sand. Being impressed by the ardour the ladies were working with, but mostly by the activity done by them, at his return home he starts telling to anyone who would like to listen about this story, taking further and further the fame of the city of Rivulus Dominarum, which is translated as the River of the Ladies. The first documentary mentioning of Baia Mare city dates back to 1329. Centuries have passed since then and along with there have been written numerous history pages that stay today as a proof of the rich past of our city. Under the city's motto, Baia Mare continues its trip along the centuries. Situated on the middle course of the Săsar River, at an average altitude of 228 m, the city known in the past under the name of Rivulus Dominarum makes its way today as well through the history. Three legends mention the origin of the Latin name of the city, Rivulus Dominarum: L E G E N D S
  • 9. Another legend mentions that meanwhile the men were gone in the mines, the city was led by the women. As in the 13th Century the Tatars started the invasions in this area from the will to steal the gold and silver wealth from the city, the women set free the dammed waters of the rivers drowning thus the attackers and saving the city. A last legend presents a totally different approach. In the medieval time, the queens would often receive from their spouses as presents vast territories that were including as well cities. It may be said this was the case as well of Rivulus Dominarum fortress, the first ladies being offered as a gift the gold and silver mines of the medieval town. At the end of the 16th Century the town receives the name of Nagybánya. Taking into consideration the Hungarian domination here ever since the beginning of the first millennium and the intensively developed industry around mining, it is easy to understand the association of the two words forming the city’s name: nagy – big and bánya – mine. The term of “bánya” adapted to the Romanian language becomes baie, with the meaning of a mine. Being an important mining centre, it was imposed the awarding of the title of “big”. Thus, the nowadays name of the city defines the big mine, as in the main mine of the area.
  • 10. the geographical structure of the area includes portions of plains, valleys, hills and mountains, as well as the richness of the soil and the subsoil provide favorable conditions for the development of human settlements since ancient times; the first traces that prove the existence of human activity on this territory date back to the Paleolithic or the Stone Age (circa 600,000-10,000 BC); the Bronze Age (1,700-700 BC) preserves evidence especially related to domestic and defense activities; due to having in the area rich resources of copper ores, but also significant amounts of gold and silver deposits, their intensive exploitation began already in this period; from the Iron Age (700 BC-106 AD), numerous deposits of gold ornaments are discovered throughout the Maramureș county, which reinforce the statement that the gold and silver mines in this area were intensively exploited even before the Roman conquest of Dacia; Let’s see now shortly the local history: H I S T O R Y
  • 11. due to the wealth of the underground in the area, different peoples are eager to conquer and rule the city, so the campaigns of conquest led by various foreign peoples begin; with the penetration of the Hungarians into the region and the conquest of the city (probably at the beginning of the 1st Millennium), the city began to develop more and more, especially by bringing "guests" (German settlers), craftsmen skilled in the art of mining; in addition to crafts, mining and agricultural activities, the city benefits from numerous exchanges due to its geographical position on a commercial road that led to Poland through Sighetu Marmației, a road also travelled by Greek and Armenian merchants or those coming from other parts; the first documentary mentioning of the city dates from May 29, 1329; it is issued by the chancellery of King Charles Robert and mentions the city for the first time under the name of Rivulus Dominarum; crafts develop step by step according to other activities of the city and with the technological evolution; craftsmen are organized in guilds and have privileges;
  • 12. although it is under the leadership of the various powers of the time throughout history (Hungarians, Hapsburg, the Principality of Transylvania, etc.), the city receives and preserves various privileges and freedoms given the fact that it is a true source for the treasury of its rulers; among them are listed the freedom to choose its mayor, jurors and parish priests, to judge within the city, the assurance of individual liberties, the freedom of customs, the right to have a fair per year for 15 continuous days, of the free sale of wine or to fortify itself with walls against the onslaught of enemies; from all the privileges granted to the city, it appears that from the middle of the 14th Century until the end of the 19th, the city is structured and well organized, with freedoms specific to a free royal city, which also benefits from a high level of autonomy; the city receives in 1484 the right to judge on its own, including the right to give the death punishment, a right otherwise rarely seen in this period; proof of the importance of the city and its economic power is also recognized by the existence of a mint from the first half of the 14th century; the mint has a net income in 1463 of 20,000 florins annually, compared to those of Buda (8,000) or Sibiu (6,000); another important privilege offered by its existence is the right of the city to mint its own currency; in the middle of the 15th Century, the city experienced an economic, social and cultural flourishing due to its entry under the influence of Iancu de Hunedoara; he orders the construction of an edifice for his wife, Elisabeta, as well as the bell tower (today known as the Stephan Tower) finalised by his son, King Matthias Corvinus; he allows the city to levy customs on carts entering the city's weekly fair, with the right to use this revenue for paving and cleaning the streets; in 1469 the city receives the right to surround itself with a wall; thus the old defense system, consisting of earthen waves and palanquins (reinforcements made of horizontally placed tree trunks) is replaced by a wall belt built by the locals, of stone and brick, interrupted in places by strong towers (bastions); the Butchers’ Bastion, the only tower in this system that still exists today, was built around the 1500s; access to the city is achieved through several entrance gates, the most important being the southern one, The Hungarian Gate, located near the Butchers’ Bastion, respectively the northern one, The Bridge Gate, located at the end of today's Podul Viilor street;
  • 13. the period of the 15th-16th Centuries is a turbulent one for the city, when it often passes from one leadership to another or is attacked by various peoples such as Hungarians, Poles, Ottomans, Tatars or Hapsburgs; at the end of the 16th Century, the city finally becomes the property of the Transylvanian princes, a period in which it found more peace and peaceful development; although the city is often annexed and divided between the great powers, all rulers respect the rights of the city throughout its existence, even granting them new ones or renewing the existing ones; the establishment of the first school, Schola Rivulina, takes place in 1547 against the background of the outbreak of the Reformation, and it has been operating for more than two centuries; in 1635, merchants from Vienna, Tarnovo, Sofia, Brussa, Chernivtsi, etc. come to the famous town fair; in 1641, a pipe for drinking water was built in the city, made of hornbeam wood, which in some places was connected with other pipes made of iron, copper, ceramics and even glass; in the 17th century it seems the city no longer fits within its 15th-Century walls, extending beyond them over the 5 km that represented the city boundary; in 1660, the city pays the Ottoman army the sum of 10,000 thalers in order not to be devastated; the amount is collected through taxes from the inhabitants, but also through loans that drowns the city's income for several decades; repayments from the loans taken are also made in 1737;
  • 14. during the religious Reform fights between the Catholics (represented by the Jesuit order) and the Reformed, the city walls are torn down in 1673; at the end of the 17th Century, due to the re-establishment of Hapsburg power and living conditions much worse than before, the rebellion of the masses is imminent and grows daily; the presence of the outlaws thus begins to be signalled; the actions led by Grigore Pintea, known as Pintea the Brave, take a large scale at the end of the 17th Century due to the exploitation, injustices and iniquities committed on the population by the Austrians and the feudal lords; in the middle of a stormy attack executed by Pintea and his gang on the city, he is fatally shot, falling in front of the South Gate, at the entrance to the city; the attack was meant to liberate the people from the current rule and mainly from the big exploitative feudal lords; a census of taxation from the end of the 18th Century gives us an overview of the city, recording the existence of 3,580 inhabitants and 705 houses reaching 9,089 inhabitants at the end of the 19th Century; under the communist administration regime with an economic policy based on industrialization, in which mining and metallurgy are predominant, the number of inhabitants of the city increases exponentially from almost 14,000 in the 1930s to almost 90,000 in 1974; the end of the 19th Century brings with it new elements of identity for the city, which begins to assert itself as a European artistic center, developed on the foundations of an institutionalized educational structure, namely the Simon Hollósy Private School of Painting (1896-1901), functional still today; the city's first museum opens its doors on June 19, 1904, its collections mainly consisting of donations from doctors, bankers, merchants or other wealthier people of the time.

  • 16. The 18th Century's Black Eagle Inn (Vasile Lucaciu with 1 Mai streets); the house from 2 Piața Libertății as one of the few that keeps at its best the German architectural characteristics of the old town; The Cloister of the Minorite Monastery from 6 Piața Libertății dating from 1734, used to house in the beginning of the 20th Century the Baia Mare Town Museum in one of its wings; Minerul Complex from 7 Piața Libertății, with its latest shape dating from 1905 (the previous building of 1874 burnt to the ground); The Lendvay House from 15 Piața Libertății (having been the house where the great actor Lendvay Márton was born) initially from the 16th Century and with further additions until the 18th Century; The Iancu de Hunedoara / Elisabeth House from 18 Piața Libertății, from the 15th Century, built at the order of Iancu de Hunedoara for his wife Elisabeth on the foundations of previous buildings; it is easily recognise by the arches suspended over the old street that once connected with the state mint. Important buildings are: Of course others are worth looking at as each has particular elements that tell their stories centuries after being built.
  • 17. Turnul Sfântul Ștefan – Piața Cetății / Saint Stephen Tower – the Citadel Square The tower was once attached to the huge Saint Stephen Church, a church with two equal naves, with a row of pillars arranged along the longitudinal axis. After the third big fire that hit Saint Stephen complex, the church is being abandoned and later completely destroyed. If you get here during the working hours, you can be a lucky viewer over the city splendid panorama offered by the tower. It kept lots of it initial decorations inside and is a perfect example of the Hungarian Catholic practices in town. Its 2 towers that guard the entrance host sculptures in a natural size. The church also is the house of an amazing organ with 3 keyboards, 40 registers and 2,470 tubes, built in 1939, being one of the biggest in the country. In the same plaza, there is also the Saint Nicholas Church, built in 1926. It is the first Orthodox church of Baia Mare resulted by transforming the sports hall of the former Roman Catholic Gymnasium through building a bell tower to it.
