Fondi is an ancient town situated between Rome and Naples in a plain surrounded by mountains. It has a rich history dating back to 1000 BC when it was settled by the Italic tribes. According to legend, Fondi was founded by Hercules. Agriculture is the main economic activity today, with Fondi known for its produce markets and mozzarella cheese production. The historic center contains well preserved medieval walls and buildings constructed by the noble Caetani family who ruled the town.

5. The HISTORY of Fondi!!! Our Town Has An Ancient History. It Begins With Early Settlements About 1000 BC. Later The Area Was Settled By The Italic Tribes Of Aurunci And Volsci. According To The Legend, Fondi Was Founded By Hercules In Memory Of The Killing Of Cacus. The First Historical Reference To Fondi Dates To 338 BC, At The Time Of The Latin War, When It Became Part Of The Roman Empire.The Importance Of Fondi Lay In Its Position Across The Old Via Appia, That Was The Main Roadway From Rome To Southern Italy. In Medieval Times Fondi Became Part Of The Papal State And The Duchy Of Gaeta. In 1534, Fondi Was Sacked By Barbarossa, Who Tried To Kidnap The Beautiful Giulia And Bring Her As A Gift To His Emperor Suleiman. However, She Managed To Escape. In The 19 th Century Started The Decline Of The Town, Caused By Malaria-infested Marshes And Brigandage.

HERE THERE ARE THE MAIN MONUMENTS: The Castle Was Built In The 14 th Century By Onorato I Caetani Over Ancient Roman Walls. In The 16th Century It Was The Seat Of Giulia Gonzaga's Court Of Literates And Artists. Since 1987 It Houses The City's Museum.
