Session 1: Presentation
Jason Umiker:
Art of PaaS - Lessons learned from running Micros, a platform for hundreds of microservices on AWS
There is a lot of talk now around the term Service Mesh. The hype is high and the promise is real. The problem is that there is not really a good definition of what service mesh really is. In this talk we are going to review the problem service meshes are trying to solve, name the core components that make up a service mesh, and discuss the benefits an organization can receive by implementing this new technology.
Migrating from VMs to Kubernetes using HashiCorp Consul Service on AzureMitchell Pronschinske
DevOps tools became very popular with the adoption of public cloud, but Operational teams now realize that their benefits can be extended to enterprise data centers. In reality, cloud native tools can help bridge public clouds and private data centers by enabling a common framework to manage applications and their underlying infrastructure components.
In this session you’ll learn about the latest Cisco ACI integrations with Hashicorp Terraform and Consul to deliver a powerful solution for end-to-end on-prem and cloud infrastructure deployments.
Infrastructure provisioning is a foundation for adopting cloud. HashiCorp Terraform is the most widely used cloud provisioning product. It can be used to provision infrastructure for any application using an array of providers for any target platform, helping organizations transition to the cloud seamlessly.
Cloud Foundry has become the industry standard platform for cloud applications. IBM, HPE, Pivotal, SAP, and many others contribute to this multi-cloud open source project to enable continuous delivery for all companies.

Introduction to Big Data Analytics using Apache Spark and Zeppelin on HDInsig...Alex Zeltov
Introduction to Big Data Analytics using Apache Spark on HDInsights on Azure (SaaS) and/or HDP on Azure(PaaS)
This workshop will provide an introduction to Big Data Analytics using Apache Spark using the HDInsights on Azure (SaaS) and/or HDP deployment on Azure(PaaS) . There will be a short lecture that includes an introduction to Spark, the Spark components.
Spark is a unified framework for big data analytics. Spark provides one integrated API for use by developers, data scientists, and analysts to perform diverse tasks that would have previously required separate processing engines such as batch analytics, stream processing and statistical modeling. Spark supports a wide range of popular languages including Python, R, Scala, SQL, and Java. Spark can read from diverse data sources and scale to thousands of nodes.
The lecture will be followed by demo . There will be a short lecture on Hadoop and how Spark and Hadoop interact and compliment each other. You will learn how to move data into HDFS using Spark APIs, create Hive table, explore the data with Spark and SQL, transform the data and then issue some SQL queries. We will be using Scala and/or PySpark for labs.
This presentation provides a brief overview of APM solutions for the Azure cloud computing platform. We identify three challenges unique to cloud computing which APM can address, and we summarize which APM techniques can be applied in IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS application architectures. To illustrate APM techniques for IaaS and PaaS we look at a variety APM offers in the Azure marketplace, including Riverbed AppInternals, Microsoft Application Insights, and NewRelic. To illustrate APM techniques for SaaS, we look at how SharePoint Online can be instrumented using JavaScript injection. This presentation was prepared and delivered by Ian Downard to the Portland Azure User Group on March 28th, 2016.
Let's meet and talk about Microsoft Azure PaaS offerings. The PaaS layer provides many scalable and globally deployed services completely manged by Microsoft that allow developer to focus on specific business requirements and to leave the infrastructure bits to the cloud provider. We will underline the differences between Virtual Machines, Cloud Services and Azure Web Apps on the compute layer. Later we will compare SQL Server and Azure SQL.
Then we will focus on Data Storage and Data Analytics services that gives incredible power to developers and data professionals.
Most of the examples we cover are platform agnostic so people from any programming background are welcome to join and share their unique experience. Microsoft Azure is getting more open and open source friendly with every new day!
Come and join us to learn more about Microsoft Azure and enjoy your journey with the public cloud!
Microsoft Azure vs Amazon Web Services (AWS) Services & Feature MappingIlyas F ☁☁☁
If you are a Cloud Architect, Developer, IT Manager, Director or whoever may be, if you are associated with Azure or AWS cloud in some form, I’m sure you must have come across a common question.
“What is the alternate service available in Azure or AWS vice versa and it’s pricing?” I’m sure you will say yes!
Agreed, it’s hard to remember all the services offered by public clouds, i.e. Azure and AWS. Remembering existing services and their benefits itself is a big task, on top of that updating ourselves with the new feature releases and enhancements is another major task.
So I put together a Service & Feature Mappings between Microsoft Azure & AWS for my and colleagues quick reference.
I hope you also find this piece informative.

AtlasCamp 2016: Art of PaaS - Lessons learned running a platform for hundreds...Robin Fernandes
Presented at AtlasCamp 2016. Recording: https://youtu.be/dc2nqzgqH24?list=PLaD4FvsFdarSqTPKnsNqrnk2ZRuuhLtYE
Connect has taken you on a journey to SaaS. Over the past few years, you've learned how running a service is deeply different from building a plugin. You've discovered tips, tricks and patterns to evolve your service while keeping it running 24/7. Now, you're managing not just one service, but a multitude – and perhaps you're wondering what needs to change as you head towards dozens or even hundreds of services.
At Atlassian, we've taken on this challenge with Micros, our internal Platform as a Service that helps developers across Atlassian easily deploy and run microservices in AWS. Running this platform involves constant decisions to strike the right balance between stability, progress, governance and flexibility. We'll tell you the lessons we've learned – both technical and non-technical – walking these tightropes.
Accelerate Your OpenStack Deployment Presented by SolidFire and Red HatNetApp
What would you do if your storage infrastructure weren't a barrier to your cloud? In 'Accelerate your OpenStack Deployment' you'll see how Agile Infrastructure (AI) simplifies deployments and dynamic IT-as-a-Service-style offerings, such as self-service test & development or production-ready private clouds. AI frees you to think up the stack and stop worrying about your infrastructure.
In this session, we explore different approaches to migrating Microsoft applications to AWS. We walk through important considerations when planning a migration, and we show how to develop and implement a migration plan to move applications from on-premises (or traditional hosting) to AWS. We use a case study format to dive deep into successfully planning an application migration. Participants work in teams to plan a SharePoint migration that integrates with an existing Active Directory.

Keshav Puttaswamy, Head of Product, Server, Atlassian
What aspects must a developer be aware of when a Web Services will be run in clustered environment such as a server farm?
Do Web Services implementations need to be \"cluster aware\", or can this be handled transparently by the runtime platform?
We revisit the subject of why keeping Web Services implementations as stateless as possible really helps in these circumstances, and the effect of using session-based facilities on scalability.
Enterprise DevOps is different then DevOps in startups and smaller companies. This session how AWS/CSC address this. How AWS IaaS level automation via CloudFormation, UserData, Console, APIS and some PaaS OpsWorks/Beanstalk is complimented by CSC Agility Platform. CSC Agility adds application compliance and security to the AWS infrastructure compliance and security. CSC Agility allows for the creation of architecture blueprints for predefined application offerings.

AWS CloudFormation Automation, TrafficScript, and Serverless architecture wit...PolarSeven Pty Ltd
Chris Kawchuck has 20 years experience in the Telecom and Service provider industry. He will be demonstrating how easy it is to spin up a Brocade vADC in AWS; enabling serverless architectures using S3 buckets, and accomplish real-time traffic rewrites to get you out of sticky situations.
Learn about:
1. Load balancing and scaling options available on AWS
2. Automating the Brocade vADC spin up using Cloudformation Templates
3. Enabling use of "Serverless" web pages in AWS 4.Taking care of tricky situations using TrafficScript
Implementing any 3rd party Load Balancer from the Amazon AWS Marketplace can be a daunting task. Not only does one have to learn the vendor's specific interface, you also need to perform quite a few administrative tasks to setup front end IPs, back end pools, clustering, and so on.
Brocade has published a CloudFormation Template (CFT) which takes all the hard work out of setting it up and operating. Using DevOps tools and open source scripts, we not only automate the deployment of the Brocade vADC within AWS, but all the configuration you need to administer, cluster, and provision your Load Balancers; including public IPs and your back-end server pools.
We would like you to try it, and take advantage of the powerful feature of the Brocade vADC.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Generating a custom Ruby SDK for your web service or Rails API using Smithyg2nightmarescribd

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
