Presentation Overview
There has been a decade’s long vision that technology will assist us with
project design and execution, handling 2D and 3D design and data
integration, saving time and improving quality. However, our industry still
seems to get to the end of the project and break out the colored pencils
and Excel / Access to see what we missed.
Are we finally on a path where the tools are going to deliver the vision?

What has been the
technology Vision?

“We want to be able to automate the design and deliverables
for a 500MW coal fired power generation station”

As an early entry – it was all about 3D
Over time, we learned it was also about the data
Some may recall the Daratech conferences over the years
Many companies started developing their own systems, most
have moved to commercial implementations
Many international companies have ended up with a mixed
bag
Vision has been around a long time

WorleyParsons’ Global Footprint

US East has been using Intergraph PDS and SmartPlant
P&ID for many years
Other systems and tools have mostly been homegrown
Integration of the information has been piecemeal but
effective to a degree
Current Deployment

AE firms have used global delivery centers (GDC) for years
Our WorleyParsons direction is to leverage our GDC not only
as a resource execution pool, but also to set the standards
for our processes, procedures and tools
AVEVA E3D has been selected as a primary 3D design tool
Our US Eastern operation also is seeing customer
requirements for use of the AVEVA tool suite
So we are working our way along a new path of tools
Global Standardization

AVEVA Suite Transformation Status

We are passing Step 1 –
E3D

First project was on a brown field site for regulatory compliance with
Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) and Effluent Limitations
Guidelines (ELG)
WorleyParsons Scope limited to Engineering
Very large 4 unit site
Existing 3D models for parts of the site from a previous modification
Initial layouts in original PDS then migrated to E3D
Extensive Laser Scans in AVEVA LFM format
Multi-location project execution
CII Advanced Work Package (AWP) methodologies
Significant engineering deliverable tracking to work packages
Our first E3D Project

E3D implementation training began on our first project in August
2016 with full deployment in January 2017
First production deliverables January 2017
Key to success was PDMS expert from our Houston office who led
the deployment
System configuration and setup
Training for all disciplines plus E3D admin
Remained with the project for its duration

Weekly Status/Issues calls
In-house support on an as needed basis
Our E3D Journey Begins

Pick the team for success – but still expect pushback
Having a PDMS/E3D expert on board day 1 to lead the effort was
absolutely key to our success
First project was a follow-on project that was done in PDS
We decided we could translate the project ourselves
Time consuming effort with resulting large object sizes – caused difficulties
with the ongoing project – performance issues
Next project had a similar starting situation and we had AVEVA do the
translation – conversion time and cost very reasonable
Deploy with Senior management involvement
Need constant overview on when to reach for help and how high
Lessons Learned

Resist ‘fixing’ the new tool to old work processes
E3D is not just a name change to PDMS
There seemed to be some issues where fixes had been made to PDMS
that were coming around again in E3D
New Pipe Support modeler in E3D
Punch list of issues to be managed and monitored constantly
Moving from the previous drafting tool to a template based drawing
tool like “Draw” seemed somewhat difficult to experienced 3D staff
Draw is WYSIWYG, but not always what you want
Initial project impact was about 10% on increased design hours
Added a .NET programmer to work with our PDMS/E3D expert to
access data in the Dabacon database for reporting
Lessons Learned

Training was about 1 week per discipline
Our workstations needed better graphics cards and more
RAM
Workshare with the Dabacon database works very well
Ease of database ‘what if’s” and ‘testing’
Started with early standard build and extended it
Frequent AVEVA patches keep us going

Basics needed past the
E3D deployment

Master Tag Register (MTR)
One place where all tag rules are automatically checked,
assigned and enforced
One place to go for tag status
One place to go for supply definition – who’s buying it
One place to go for tag description – push back to model and
other tools

P&ID Content alignment with E3D
Engineering Pipe Specs alignment to E3D catalogue
Homegrown Cable routing alignment to E3D
What’s IFC and what isn’t and why
Extensive need to manage quantities between the capital
cost estimate and design

Focus on progress measurement beyond deliverables to model
objects – Model Element Manager (MEM)
Real design progress is by maturity of the objects, no so much by the
deliverables
Objects grouped by categories – mechanical equipment, pipe, supports,
steel, cable tray, foundations, structures, etc.
Objects are estimated by category and area
Objects pass through a progress gate structure
All objects have a tag number
Progress defined how object is progressing through the engineering,
procurement and ultimately construction path
Progress directly in the model with dashboard style interfaces with change
control

With the extent necessary to move off our homegrown
system, we debated about not migrating to AVEVA P&ID
After review, fell it will be worthwhile to take full advantage of
staying within the suite and going with the migration
Using the Engineering tool for list management seems very
effective for enhanced change control
Planning some advance work of project, but generally will
wait so we don’t train too early
Step 2 – Engineering and P&ID

Need to move to commercial systems
AVEVA provided us with a ‘deep dive’ workshop for a week to
go over these tools in general with some minimal training
Good acceptance from the engineering and design
community
Again, planning some advance work of project, but generally
will wait so we don’t train too early
Plus AVEVA Net as the next step to follow
