10. Sand Casting
Overview
Ideally suited for complex geometries, sand casting takes advantage of sand’s
inherent compactibility, refractory nature and recyclability to produce relatively
inexpensive molds.
Sand casting requires a relatively low investment and allows for quick tooling
development and part changes at a reasonable cost.
As a result, it’s well suited for working through the evolution of designs and for lower
volume production parts.

11. Sand Casting
Applications
Avalon Precision Metalsmiths uses sand casting for parts made of aluminum and
gray or ductile iron. Part weights can vary from a few ounces to several hundred
pounds.
Examples run the gamut from small parts like gears, pulleys, connecting rods and
propellers to large components such as pump components, manifolds, cylinder heads
and transmission cases.
Avalon works with pre-qualified foundries for sand casting in China and other Asian
countries to ensure our customers have the highest quality parts on time and on
budget.

12. Permanent Mold Casting
Overview
Permanent mold casting – also known as gravity die casting – provides good
dimensional stability and is well-suited for medium to large parts, particularly those
with thicker wall sections.
Suitable for volumes of 100 to 1,000 parts, it has a tooling turn-around time similar to
that of high-pressure die casting but doesn’t supply as beautiful of a finish.
Applications
Examples include gears, pipe fittings, fuel injection housings and automotive engine
components, generally made of aluminum or sometimes copper or brass. Permanent
mold castings generally weigh between one pound and 50 pounds.

13. Permanent Mold Casting
Options

• Tilt pour gravity die castings, which provide a very consistent, regulated flow of
metal
• Hand ladled gravity die castings, which allow for large castings with good part
