The INSIGHT project launch event at MIM Brussels summarized the Rijksmuseum's journey with data and collections information management over time. It described the growth of the museum's physical and digital collections, the increasing professionalization of cataloging and metadata practices, and more recent initiatives to share open data through APIs and third party platforms. The talk highlighted both challenges around overcoming data silos and opportunities to provide expanded access and new research services through an interoperable, networked approach to the museum's collection data.

Challenges of the Rijksmuseum Research Library

The Rijksmuseum Research Library faces challenges in adapting to new research methods and technologies while maintaining its historical role supporting the museum's collections. As the library professionalized in the 20th century, it focused on cataloging and automating its collections. Creating a Digital Collection: The experience of the Wien Museum

The Wien Museum has a wide range of collections from the history of Vienna including archaeology, art, fashion, and culture. Over the past four years, museum staff inventoried over 750,000 objects across five different databases. They are now working to consolidate the data into a single collection management system called MuseumPlus. This will allow them to correct errors, eliminate redundant information, and integrate additional data from ongoing archaeological analyses in Vienna. The photographic documentation of objects is an ongoing process.

The Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2013 had several key priorities and goals for their research agenda. Their top priority was working towards the commencement of Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation program starting in 2014.
