Instructional Methods and Technology Dr. Clark G. Armstrong – Instructor
Reaction to the Article: Instructional Methods and Learning Styles
Teaching is the noblest and the hardest profession. The field of education determines the
future of every society. Without it, no other profession could ever succeed. Education whether
done in a formal or in an informal way still has its own rules and parameters. This particular field
has never ending changes, adaptations and experiments.
I agree with the strong statement in the starting of the article that every child is different
yet they have commonalities. It can be compared to the language acquisition of a child. Every
child in different culture and society with different mother tongue generally learns language in
the same way even though there are some differences which can be caused by its nurturing
environment. The only difference with the education of the child is though are given the same
lessons but the teaching strategy done by the teacher should meet the need of their learning
styles.
In this present time, we belong to the era which education is no longer a 100 teacher-
centered education. Educators are encourage not to just depend on the book but rather think
creatively on how to present the content in a way that it can be understood and in a way that the
cognitive learning will eventually lead into the behavioral learnings. There are many
instructional methods that can be applied as mentioned in pp. 129-133 that can assist and asses in
learning development. It’s true that each methods has its own controversies but as teachers what
we can do is to make us of the tools that ca help us communicate the content to the learners.
Every culture has its own preferences but it doesn’t disclaim the idea that every learner’s need to
learn has to be met.
Teaching does not only mean to teach students what they need to learn to reach their
goals but it also includes teaching them to know and to be aware of the ongoing controversies
that surrounds in their own culture, society and in the world. In this way just the author said that
it allows students to question even the authority which is very important in their learning process.
Students need to feel and know that their voice can be heard and they have the right to ask and
that their opinions also matters. However, this has to follow a system and procedures.
Every teachers has its own learning style preferences but as effective educators we
always have to think first of our students. Our intention is important but what matters most is the
need and the learning of our students. Every curriculum instruction has its own rationale but it is
our duty to gather what we can have and not just teach the book. It’s true when it was said in p.
147 that, “If we get too comfortable, we stop growing. Students can put pressure on us to work
within their comfort zone. Let’s be kind about that. Kind enough to let them learn to be
uncomfortable” (Thelan, 1963). We have to make our students uncomfortable so that their
process of learning will be more challenged. Also, with us, we should let ourselves be
uncomfortable so that we can seek more to educate ourselves and learn to integrate what we have
to provide a better and quality learning experience to the students.
